Blair, this was so informative. First time in my life I have ever tried to fix calcium deposits in rim jets of a toilet, but you made it easy. Also saved us the $300 a plumber wanted to charge for running a snake. We have a good quality low-flush, but after 2 years it began to falter. I did the bucket test and it worked, so I looked at rim jets, and indeed one was not sending out enough water due to calcium deposits. Used CLR and after an hour and some pushing with a coat hanger it worked just fine. Thank you from AZ!!!

Great video. I had a slow flushing toilet due to calcium build up in the main jet at the bottom. I did the bucket test to confirm the drain was ok and it was a main jet with calcium buildup. I grabbed a gallon CLR from Home Depot for $25 instead of Muriatic Acid. The reason why I got the gallon size is because I wasn't sure if would need to repeat the process. I'm glad I did because the main jet was almost completely block with mineral deposit. I used about a cup of CLR and left it in for about 30 minutes and it got rid of some of the calcium deposit but as I mention it was a major buildup. I did use a brush to try to break up the calcium buildup but had to repeat the process. The second time I let it sit for 4 hours and removed more of calcium. After the second time, the flush was much stronger and seems to work fine. If you have a major buildup I recommend you leave the CLR in for a least a few hours so it breaks up the calcium.

This is amazing. I live in an old building with a lot of older folks who can’t afford to put new toilets in (what plumbers are telling them they need to do). If this works for them it will literally save them the money they need to buy food with this month. I’m ordering a case of this stuff asap and I’m gonna try it on their toilets. I can’t afford to buy them all new toilets but I can afford 6 bottles of this stuff. Wish me luck.

I had intuitively done what you called the “bucket test,” and had concluded that must be a buildup of hard water deposits inside the rim that was causing my toilet to flush so slowly. I tried the clothes hanger method you mentioned at the end of this video, but as you already know I saw limited success. I was about to disassemble my toilet to perform metaphorical surgery on the sucker when I figured I’d check RU-vid first to make sure I understood how. I watched a “how to” about how to take it apart and was about to proceed when I saw your video as related out of the corner of my eye. After watching it, I am pleased to know that I was correct in my diagnosis of the problem, and in my original solution, I just hadn’t left the acid in long enough to get the job done! Thank you for this vid, it has saved my evening!!! Now, instead of first dismantling and then remantling my toilet, I can spend it snuggling my pups instead. They thank you just as much as I do!!!

This video resolved our issue! Thank you Mr. Hardware! I watched a few videos before this one so I checked blockage in the exhaust pipe and plunging it repeatedly but nothing would work. The toilet water would get a decent twirl but our “business” wasn’t flushing down all the way. After doing all the things you did in this video we now have a tornado of a flush taking all the bowl contents down the drain! I live in Metro Detroit and was able to pick up a few of these Rooto 1090 toilet cleaner at a local Hardware store for $5. Online prices were extremely high. I did notice that my bottle’s solvent was thicker and darker. My experience was similar to the video where even if you pour it fast, it still only came out the back siphon jet holes. Regardless, I let it sit and then used a thicker/sturdier pipe cleaning brush to insert and scrub around each of the jet holes. Once the time was up, I flushed and also cleaned the large jet hole at the bottom of the bowl. A few flushes later it works!

I was just battling this issue today and decide YT has to have someone that can advise me on what needs to be done, and you absolutely knocked it out of the park with your show & tell how to do it. Especially the part about the overflow tube to supply cleaning acid to the rim jets and the lower port. Blair, you are a gem. This video pointed me in the right direction. I like to keep it simple and actually just poured standard muriatic acid, about a cup, in the overflow tube let it sit for a couple of hours and saw immediate results and slow flush was gone. I did it again just to get any remaining deposit using the same method and now works great. No digging, scraping, expensive plumber, etc.

I spent $3,600 to a plumbing company, who'd said it was my drains (now in small claims court) - Since the drains were "cleared" with an access point in my yard, which was dug up) it did nothing to solve the problem with my toilet! I had discovered before I knew of the "bucket test", that my toilet would flush if I added a large bowl full of water every time, which was a sink companion for over a month. I used1/2 bottle of CLR 4 hours the 1st day, (half the bottle) - and overnight the 2nd day (the rest of the bottle). It did more than to repair the flush. My toilet (which had ugly stains on the bottom) - looked like new, worked like new! It's now been 3 weeks, and I'm wallowing in the wonderment of having a perfectly working toilet! I can't thank you enough for this great video!

Thank you for the tip! Rooto is pretty much unaffordable at this point but some Bowl cleaner and a paper clip opened up a bunch of the drain holes that were clogged up. I had no idea that was the cause of my slow flush issue. I know its been 5 years since you posted this but the information is timeless!!

This worked great! I could not find the Rooto toilet delimer near me, but I had a bottle of the Lysol lime and rust on hand, used the whole bottle, waited an hour, my old, old toilet flushes again and is spotless. This is so easy...thank you!

The rim jets on most toilets are just to help keep the bowl clean. The jet at the very bottom is the one that assists in flushing. The exception to that being some toilets are rim flush and have no lower jet. I have a crane toilet at home that is rim flush. You had a misunderstanding of the purpose of the jets, I hope this helps.

On "The Carey Brothers" radio show on KSFO in San Francisco several years ago the brothers recommended thoroughly drying the area under the rim of the bowl, then securely putting masking tape over the holes to completely seal the water channel in the rim. Add the deliming acid - they recommended white vinegar - to the overflow standpipe, or if the toilet tank was empty and dry, via the flush valve to fill up the water channel in the rim. Let the vinegar work for 12-24 hours to dissolve the scale and break it down into particles small enough to pass through the weep holes in the rim. Remove the masking tape, flush the toilet as normal and you're done. Muriatic acid will get the job done quicker than vinegar, but can be hazardous to use. Other commercial acidic deliming preparations such as CLR and Lime-A-Way can also be used, with strengths somewhere between vinegar and muriatic acid.

Excellent demonstration Mr. Gilbert! You remind me of someone's friendly all around Mr. Fixit Uncle or something! I love how simple your explanation was, and how thorough you were all at the same time. Where have repairmen like you gone? Thankfully my Dad and my Uncle Don passed on tons of their handyman knowledge for me to use, and to pass on to my nephews (I don't have a son). No one fixes anything anymore, they just throw it away and waste money and fill up the landfills. It's terrible. Anyway, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed and thank you for the tip! You were by far the best in the 3-4 that I watched!

You can commonly see calcium / lime scale build-up at the jet hole at the bottom of the bowl and it will look brownish yellow but never flushes out. It’s not just the rim holes, but also mainly the large jet hole at the bottom of the bowl because it always sits in water. This can easily be dissolved with Muriatic Acid (available at HD, Lowes, etc). The steps to carefully follow are; #1 Buy a gallon for around $10-$15. Note that online recommendations say 1 part to 5 parts water but I think that is way too thin of a mix after using it several times with different toilets. #2 Buy a good NIOSH mask, googles and gloves. You DO NOT want to breathe the fumes of this stuff! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. #3 I use a 1:1 mix and my standard rule of thumb is 1 hour for every 1/8" of lime scale build-up. So in general, around 1 hour is a good soak time. If really bad, you may need 2 hours. #4 First, before starting. empty your toilet bowl. Shut off the water supply valve near the floor, then using a large pitcher or a 5 gallon bucket with a few gallons of water quickly pour the water down the bowl (not tank) very fast right in the center to help empty the bowl (the key here is use good aim and a very fast pour so that most of the water flows through the P trap in the toilet into the drain.. speed and physics at work here! #5 Now mix up the acid water mix OUTSIDE of your house. Then pour in the acid / water mix you've made in another container (again, you should do the mixing OUTSIDE) and pour the mix in from the TANK (not bowl this time) and while doing so hold the lever down as if you were already flushing to keep the tank flapper open. This allows the mix to circulate around the inner ring top first and then it filters into the bowl but leaves some in the ring. This is very important because we want to clean both..ring and bowl. #6 Fill it up with the mix so that the bowl is as full as it can be. Then cover the bowl firmly with plastic and turn on your bathroom vent fan to exhaust fumes. #7 Set a timer for 1 to 3 hours depending on how bad your deposits are. Use 3 hours for very bad deposits (like really bad slow flush issues). #8 When ready, turn the water back on and flush the toilet three times. If cleaned properly it should flush like new (providing your tank components work properly too). #9 Now, you can fast pour a pitcher again (step 4) to empty the bowl, then reach down in the toilet and put your middle finger in the jet hole to feel inside it. If the jet hole feels rough and closed up, you may need another treatment. Using a small round makeup mirror set down in the bowl bottom will also help you visually see the internal build up of lime scale. Angle the mirror at 45 degrees so you can see into the hole as far as possible. #10 Providing your tank components are working and adjusted properly, I can assure you that this clean out method will get your old toilet flushing like NEW. Last year I got a 5 year old $500 Kohler toilet for free off Craigslist because it had slow flush and they couldn't figure it out. They even replaced the tank components first and of course, it still didn't work. I solved it with 2 hours cleaning time, a new rubber base ring, and a $10 gallon of Muriatic acid. For only being 5 years old it had a ton of calcium/lime scale. I now have a top of the line 5 year old toilet with new internal tank components that flushes like new. .. all for $10!

I purchased a case since we have four bathrooms and followed the video to the tee. The bucket test is real important and can save you a visit by a Plummer since it shows that you don't have a blocked pipe. I just fix my toilet I used one gallon of vinegar it works perfectly. I do live in TX. I am not able to buy the rooto1090 I looked at Amazon they do not carry it. So I tried vinegar and works. If you seal the holes with tape or plastic wrap you can leave the delimer, acid or vinegar in there to have more time to react with the lime deposits.

You are a genius. Ive been using a pitcher in order to flush my toilet for months. Ive also been utilizing the coat hanger trick. I wish i could back flow the acid into the pipes. We do not have cold water coming into the kitchen or bathroom sink ( 1942 pipes). Can't afford to replace them and they are blocked with well water debris. We only have cold water in the tub faucet. The tap to the washing machine is also corroded it won't turn (it's in the off position)Im afraid to wrap it with an acid cleaner because if it lets loose the valve to shut off the water main doesn't move either and there would be no way to stop the water. 😫 we've run a water hose from outside to the washing machine in order to wash the clothes. Love the old farm houses but issues can be costly. 😢😢 Thank you for the info. 🤗

I know this sounds rlly dumb, but I just moved into my own apartment for the first time and I’ve never lived alone and the apartment is in a house built in the 1910s. The sink oven toilet heating and cooling look like they haven’t been replaced in 50+ years. My dad passed 3 yrs ago and he’s who I would usually call for help on this kinda stuff. I have a toilet in my house that was installed in 1972 when the house was built. From time to time it has given me problems. I must add that I have well water, so we know that can lead to issues. I just put a bottle of Lime Away in the overflow tube and scrubbed the bowl. MUCH BETTER! And, not as harsh of chemicals

Great tip. Kick it up a notch by closing the cistern faucet, setting a fish tank motor into the toilet bowl with a tube running from the motor to the overflow in the tank. This way you continuously flush the tank with the acid solution instead of just once. Let it run for an hour or two. Or use vinegar or CLR. All will work.

Thanks. Before I saw this video, I used vinegar, a gallon in the bowl (after clearing the water), and a pump to continuously pump it into the stand pipe, running for an hour. Clearly a stronger acid, as you mention here, has the advantage.

On my toilet I found that the siphon jet was about 2/3s clogged up with calcium. I flushed the toilet with a bucket of water then took a mirror and looked into the siphon jet......it was badly clogged. I used a small pick to remove the calcium block, it was very difficult to remove and took me about 20 minutes to clean out. After removing the clogged I used vinegar (didn't have access to your product) in the way you suggest. Now the toilet works like new. Thanks for your video.

Great video. I use the same technique but with gel-type toilet cleaner, it clings in the jets longer to dissolve the calcium deposits.

Until I ran into your video. I couldn't find that specific product in my city. But I did find something similar to it that was for tile, I believe. Great video, but just run duct tape around the underside of the rim to block the rim jets, before pouring the acid. Cheap Dollar Store cleaning vinegar will also work, but it takes longer, so just leave it to work overnight.

The top holes are for cleaning the bowl. The bottom hole opposite of the drain hole is the jet hole that makes the toilet flush. It needs to be cleaned of deposits.

Amazing. Thank you for this. 22 year-old toilet, main one for the house, started slow flushing a month ago and assumed it was some kind of outlet issue. Tried your bucket test with skepticism but ok, that worked better than flushing. So two rounds of VINEGAR for 30 minutes, taped the holes on the second round, then amazing how all the holes/spigots ran like new!

Wow ...... This method worked Great ...!!! But , I did make one improvement .... I have a Kohler Class 5 toilet . It has a 3" drop with the canister inside... But we have hard water and little by little I noticed the flush wasn't as vigorous as it was when new.... The alteration I made was . 1. I went around the rim before I started with a small Allen wrench and pushed it through the holes wiggling it around. 2. Using Gorilla tape, I taped all the holes closed to hold the solution in the rim longer. 3. Using a the bulb end of an old antifreeze tester , I blocked the siphon jet at the bottom, again to trap the solution inside... The rest was the same to the end, except I pulled off all the tape and bulb . Then used hot water to bring the level up to get the solution up to the trap .... Wow .... water shot out of all the jets and there was force like it was new ....! Good Procedure ... Maybe once a year, keep it clean ! 😊

Good video. 3 in 1stuff not available where I live. I used muriatic acid (nasty stuff but pretty cheap) following the exact application shown here. I had some mineral deposits about 1/4 in thick and impossible to scape off. Let it sit for about an hour and clean as a whistle, I was surprised but it got it all. I also covered over the toilet bowl and the water intake inside the tank with saran wrap to reduce the fumes (you will notice the fumes). I let it sit for about an hour, probably could have been done in 45 minutes.

The bucket trick was not one that I was aware of and completely helped me diagnose the problem. I was able to buy a better plunger to seal the opening and boom, clog removed. Thank you!

The rim ports on many toilets are for bowl wash down. It's the siphon jet, sometimes it's concealed, that gets mineral clog. If you can see it reem it out with a stiff wire then treat with chemical.

Great tip, but I would recommend pouring that solution more carefully so that none of it gets into the tank water! That stuff eats away at the flapper valve and seat! also the rubber washers holding the tank down to the bowl! I learned the hard way by pouring vinegar in the tank and flushing with it as another video recommended!

Thank you for your excellent instructional video. I found the Rooto 3 in 1 chemical cleaner at my local hardware store and followed your instructions. My toilet now flushes as it should.

Years ago, I knew a fella, that had calcium build up in all his home's plumbing. The taps were slow, the shower was slow, flushing was slow, everything was slow. Reason being was, his home was fed with well water, and brought up from the well by an electrical pump to a 20 gal. reservoir tank, then fed by pipe, from the well's pump house, to his home's feed line. Pressure was good where it came into the house, but the house plumbing was older than the pump system he was using to feed water to the house. He decided to use some calcium acid cleaner to clean out the whole house system. He was only supposed to use a small amount of cleaner to clean out the system, but instead, he shut off the pump, drained the tank out, and poured 3 gal. of this calcium cleaner into the empty pump's reservoir tank. He opened "all the taps" that spouted water in the house, went back outside, and flipped on the pump switch. That tank began filling up again, and was feeding both chemical acid cleaner, and water throughout his home. In a very short time, his wife began yelling her head off, to stop what ever he was doing. He ran into the house, and all the taps were pushing out a cream coloured foam at very high pressure ( and I do mean very, very, high pressure). The kitchen sink' tap was blowing this foam out like a rocket on "High test fuel". Even the garden hose was blowing it out like crazy (like I said, he had opened all the taps through out the house. This foam was spraying all over his backyard, when we arrived to see what was happening. He near emptied his well that day of all water, just flushing his home's plumbing out. He couldn't shut the system's water flow off, or there would be too much foam pressure built up in the pipes within the house. It took at least an hour to have his home's system flushed enough where clear water began to flow through the taps again. He succeeded in getting the water pressure up, and flowing properly within his house, but it took hours cleaning the house afterwards of foam on walls, floor, doors, and such. The three of us that arrived after he began pumping this acid cleaner throughout his house, were rolling in laughter, watching him hold onto his garden hose, (while his wife yelled at him), that was spewing creamy foam all over the backyard. That foam was coming out of the hose, like there was a pressure washer firing out all that foam. The foam was all over the place, and all over the fella as well. It did fix the problem of low water pressure in his house, but I doubt he will ever do that again.

Once I had like an idiot just dropped a piece of toilet paper down the center pipe when cleaning the toilet back and thought nothing of it, and maybe it was not the problem but it sure focused 100% of the light on the top part of the toilet rather then the bottom (drain and trap) and now it flushes amazing! I also ordered a bottle of the stuff you recommend to have on hand BTW the prices on it have quadrupled it's not $5 anymore its now about $20 but on EBay you can get it for $10 shipping included and of course Amazon has it for $39 (Who cares :) )

I was wondering how well it cleans the jets if it just passes though them and then looses contact. Wouldn’t it clean them better if there was a way to cover the jets temporarily and let the cleaner sit for awhile in the jet before letting it flush through?

I was cleaning my toilet and noticed a bunch of black crud coming out the more I drove the bristled brush up the under side of the rim and the more I worked it the more I noticed water flowing down the front of the bowl where I hadn’t noticed any flow before. Which led me to your channel. Because I figured there were journals inside I couldn’t see. You referred to them as raceways Anyway liked and subscribed and heading to the hardware store to pick up a bottle of the referenced product and clean all three toilets that way. Thanks. I tried some of the tricks the others said but I'll look for the cleaner you used. I have on jet that is like concrete is in it. I used vinegar, dawn, bowl cleaner and the hole didn't open at all. I considered my drill but I'll try your way 😁

The only problem is it can eat the wax ring I've done it with vinager .cleans verry well though

Four years later and this video is still helping people out. Was finally able to get Rooto 3-in-1 from Amazon. The price fluctuated wildly, but I got it "on sale" for $20.00 a quart. I suppose I could have tried something similar, but I really wanted to use this specific brand with your instructions first. I let it sit for an hour before flushing. So far, so good! Even after 12 or more flushes, I can still see a few bits of calcium gunk coming out of the jets. For others: Don't forget to open a window if you can - the fumes can be quite something! another trick... plug up the holes I've plugged up the holes in a few ways... putty... playdough, tape My favorite was to put masking tape over all the holes (make sure it's dry) spray down the toilet bowl with wd40 (makes cleanup easier) and spray foam to hold the masking tape in place. Then, you can use whatever lime treatment you want and it won't leak out. Then, you remove the foam and tape, and give it a few flushes and you're golden

Hi. Is a highly acidic product like the one you demonstrate, safe for septic systems? I would only use it occasionally and am mostly concerned with it upsetting the bacterial activity which septic systems rely on to function properly. Thanks!

I found this video after I had finally figured out my problem. I used muratic acid. My toilet was plugged due to the lack of pressure to flush the waste through the pipe. Cleared the pipe expecting everything was ok. That’s when I realized I lacked water pressure. Poured acid in the tank and solved my problem. The jets were clean as new.
