I use a Renzetti vise. That one is specifically a vise they call the Saltwater Traveler. In my experience Renzetti makes the very best vises (and rod lathes) in the world. www.renzetti.com/saltwater-traveler/

Totos rocks! Answered many many questions for me. Started with his method, you have a few nice variations to add to my arsenal going to tie a few dozen for varied size jigs that I just got in. Thank you.

Agree...Totos is the best. So generous with his information and expertise. I love that guy. I have been meaning to do more videos on large single assists including the splicing methods...stay tuned.

Why don't you try using those little pieces of plastic tubing that manufacturers often put on brand new lures. Put one on the point of the first hook so you don't hook yourself.

That would work great. I would just forget to remove them!

Somehow fisherman still haven't caught onto the Insta Flex glue. I had used every spectra glue on the market before researching and finding it in a hobby shop. Unequivocally I can say that in my opinion it is the best glue available for this and wind ons. I use the blue on 100lb and up wind ons, and the pink bottle on 80lb all the way down to 20lb. I'm also a big fan of the Toro Tamer Hollow Core, if your eyes are good enough you can actually splice 14lb mono into the 20lb hollow.

Jeff Smith I agree! Insta Flex is a superior product. Not sure why it hasn’t caught on? I found it through wind ons as well and it has no peers for that application. It also lasts forever and doesn’t set up in the bottle...which ultimately makes it cheaper.

Nice info, thanks! Can I use shrink wrap instead of UV resin as top coating? I also have 24hr epoxy here, does that also work?
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding Год назад
Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! Yes - you can use shrink tube/shrink wrap. I'd recommend using a high quality superglue on the threads before you add the shrink tube. Marine grade adhesive-lined 3:1 shrink tube works best for me and is available in a wide range of colors. Also - be a little careful when you shrink it. All the cords - and threads - have different melting points. I have accidentally done some damage so go easy. Any epoxy from 5 min to 24 hour will also work...it just takes more work and you likely need something to rotate the hooks as they dry. But if you can manage that any marine grade or waterproof epoxy will actually work great. Hope this helps...good luck!

Congratulations on the video! A curiosity...why in slow jigging fishing the hooks of the double hook bracket must face each other? Thank you! Pedro - Brazil
@masteringrodbuilding

Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! We face the two hooks inward to reduce the risk of snagging and hanging bottom structure. It also helps reduce the risk of your jig fouling at depth. Hope this helps!

I am a US Army veteran currently residing in the Philippines. I have been watching many videos on assist hooks, and I am curious why there are no videos on Fastpitch double assist hook setups. From what I have seen here by the anglers, they use on top & bottom double assist hook setup (slow pitch) on fat and skinny Torpedoes and Flaties lures. When I ask about the correct procedure, it is a Secret. So I am asking you about the proper process on Fastpitch double assist hook setups (if any). Can you do a short video on Fastpitch assist hooks, single and double? Thank

@masteringrodbuilding Год назад
Hello - So sorry for the delayed reply but I missed your comment and inquiry somehow. Apologies! I would be happy to share a fast pitch dual assist set up with you but I only use singles on my fast pitch/speed/mechanical set ups. I'm not familiar with a double? But I can work on a single video...lots of great techniques for that. Stay tuned...

beautiful video, I would like to ask you the material where can I buy it? I live in Italy, I would like to know what thread to use for the bindings, what type of glue, and finally I saw did you use a UV resin or a UV GLUE? Mi puoi rispondere per favore?
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 2 года назад
Benvenuto! Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! So - for the thread I use UTC 140 or 210 denier. You should be able to find this type of thread - which is a linear, non-bonded thread (like filaments, not a woven rope) at any fly shop in Italy. Not sure where you are in Italy - but try an online Italian Fly Shop like 54 Dean Street, Like a River, or Crazyfly. They should have some form of 140 or 210 thread - UTC, Danville Flat Nylon, etc. For the glue to adhere the bindings, I use very high quality super glue (ca glue) from Bob Smith Industries called Insta Flex...you can find it here: smile.amazon.com/Insta-flex-flexible-thin-Bob-Smith/dp/B002N507IA/ref=sr_1_2?crid=VK1PAXF6N0QW&keywords=bob+smith+industries+instaflex&qid=1652449082&sprefix=bob+smith+industries+insta+flex%2Caps%2C75&sr=8-2 For the final top coating of the thread wraps, I like UV Resin. This is again - like the thread - a fly tying product. You can find it at most fly shops, but make sure you tell them you want a very durable UV Resin that dries tack-free (not sticky). You will need a special UV light or lamp to cure this Resin...links to both resin and UV light examples below. You should be able to find them in Italy in a Fly Tying Shop. smile.amazon.com/Solarez-Ultra-UV-Cure-Fly-TIE-Resin/dp/B077MWZW8X/ref=sr_1_9?crid=1Q6XLMS6CSOM6&keywords=uv+resin+for+fly+tying&qid=1652449183&sprefix=uv+resin+for+fly+tying%2Caps%2C74&sr=8-9 smile.amazon.com/Loon-Outdoors-UV-Infiniti-Light/dp/B077MTTS5T/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1HHF4DAME30JU&keywords=loon+uv+light&qid=1652449244&sprefix=loon+uv+light%2Caps%2C72&sr=8-6 All of these items can also be found on Amazon.com. Hope this helps...let me know if you have questions.

Subscribed! Good stuff and thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos. What if I wanted to add the sabiki bling to the other style (in your other video with hooks with shank eyelets). Can I just whip it over the knot? I also just picked up some really cool material from my local fly fishing shop called Spanflex...it's more durable than mylar but not exactly all rubber either. I want to punch up some pink and white to make a little 1" buck-tail looking sabiki on my assists hooks that are tied, not whipped like this. Thank you.
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 2 года назад
Thanks for that and you are most welcome! So...on the Sabiki style I'd do exactly what you are suggesting: tie the assists and then add the bling either over the knot or on the shank below it and see how they do. You might even try adding the bling first and then tying the assist cord? I'd recommend just tying a few and then trying them and once you see what works you can tie a bunch of them up. I am very familiar with Spanflex. It's kinda like a rubber strand material with a pearlescent finish. Try it out and see how it does. My only concerns are that it ties in fairly bulky and it may get bitten clean off. It's very stretch by not abrasion resistant at all. But only one way to find out! Please let me know how they work out. Good luck!

The cord you used to tuck your tag end under those last 15 wraps. What is that and where can I get that. Very nicely done...btw. I know they are time consuming but fishing those hooks without the flash are the best way to set up your jig. All the bulk of flash or Benny's way creates drag and inhibits the jig fall and the hook swing when setting. Just my opinion.

Angry Patriot thanks for watching...please like and subscribe! I use ToroTamer 20# 16-strand hollow core braid from Charkbait.com for the tie off loops...this is the stuff I use for rod building, too. It’s great but you can use any 20# or so braid. I recommend white/uncoated braid if you have it. Hope this helps!

So...I think they may have gone out of business. Any tack free rigid UV cure resin will do. Both the Loon and the Solarez work very well: www.flyfishfood.com/collections/uv-resin-adhesives?pf_t_type=UV%20Resin%20Kits
