Slow Pitch Jigging with Daiwa Baitcaster and Ocean's Legacy Origin Longfall

How well does a baitcaster work for slow pitch jigging?
This is something I'd always wanted to try as I enjoy the ease of use of a bait caster and how light it is. The only baitcaster I have is the Daiwa Kohga IC which has a slow retrieve ratio of 4.3:1 which is not ideal for SPJ as it won't give as much lift to the jig compared to a 7.3:1 ratio reel. Turns out it worked out great as I paired it with a Longfall slow pitch rod and the fishing action was good throughout the day catching plenty of Snapper and some small Kingfish which put up a great fight before being released back.
As usual in my videos I try to include a few tips around SPJ so you can understand why I do certain techniques during my fishing

Hey there, i have a question about using a baitcaster for spj. Should i tighten the tension knob or let it be as loose as possible to get the best action in spj? I usually fish at depths of 60-120m using jigs ranging from 80-200g.

Great video. I use a Okuma Komodo SS273 7.3 gear ration. Paired with a major craft crostage 20-60g rod for SPJ in the bays in San Diego, Ca. So much easier.

If you use jigs 20-60g, you're not slow jigging. Especially with a baitcaster. Proabably you're micro jigging0
@FishoDavo
@FishoDavo 2 месяца назад
@IdontcareJnoJon yeah good call I'm fine with calling it microjigging where it's under 30g. there's a few names to describe the different jig weights, on this trip I am lifting the jigging and dropping back down to get the flutter action, so it falls within slow pitch jigging to me.

this is what i want to try micro jigging using my kk royale legend II 200 baitcast reel since i cant afford to buy jigging/trolling reel, thanks mate
@FishoDavo
@FishoDavo Год назад
Yeap baitcaster is not ideal but it will work to start with, the short comings I have are less lift and slower retrieve due to the slower ratio of my reel

Hey mate, had a good session with a micro jig the other day, do you know if a micro jig is more suited to a slow pitch or slow jig rod?
@FishoDavo
@FishoDavo 4 месяца назад
Hey mate, that's a tricky question, I think given the microjigs are so light (5g-25g) it doesn't matter too much the type of rod if you are not casting. Microjigs can be worked in many ways, bounce along the bottom, slow wind up, twitch it to imitate a baitfish. For me I would pick a softbait rod or a light slow pitch rod over a slow jig rod, but I think a slow jig rod would work fine too if that's all you got
