SLOW JIGGING TIPS you won't find anywhere else.
This video will help you fine tune your tackle system and catch more fish. In this video, I talk about some hard truths about what's going on with some people's perception of Slow Jigging, and clearing things up, at least in my perspective. I share a lot of tips in this video so it might take a while to digest things. I also reveal a bit about my background...I don't know if that's something of interest to people, but I thought I should share a bit of what I did so people know - I know what I am talking about.
I really should have added this to the video - but for those people that think the gulf stream is so strong that no other current in the world rivals it, here we go :
The Kuroshio Current is one of the major ocean currents. It begins east of the Philippines then flows in a northeastward direction past Taiwan and Japan. It forms the western side of the clockwise North Pacific Ocean gyre. The average speed of the Gulf Stream is 6.4KPH. According to NASA, the Kuroshio flows particularly fast and deep, flowing at a rate of 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) per second. Thats 9KPH!
my 6foot 5cm rod rated at 80lb PE 2 should be able to handle 1g/foot.

Thank you. I'm going on my second off-shore 30 hr party boat trip this June for America Red Snapper (primarily) if I'm lucky a grouper. Here's the deal, the boat steams about 2.5 hrs off-shore to about 200ft of water and the current is pretty strong. Not to mention it's a party boat so the skipper anchors. I was on the stern vertical jigging with 250g jibs (using the rule of thumb) with a PE-3 rod, narrow spool conventional reel and 30lb power pro with a 20ft topshot of 40lb mono. Boy, was the "kiting" or scope out insane. So what do I do? Well I'm moving up to avg 350g jibs, a little slimmer profile and going to use double assist on top with only one hook with a tinsel/skirt, the other w/o only heat shrink and only a single assist on the bottom (less drag). Is my approach sound for these conditions? BTW, still caught my limit of ARS so it wasn't all that bad. Thank you.

30lb power pro could test over 50lb. it's not 30lb, it is 50lb or more. The line is the largest surface area you present to the flow, not the jig. So your jig Kiting, or scoping as how you guys came to call it - isn't because your jig is heavy enough, it is because your line is too thick. I've included an amazon link for Japanese braid on the description if you want to go serious on your slow jigging and see the potential all of you have been missing out on.

@@TheFishingKit no kidding? Wow, that's great information. In lieu of ordering this Japanese PE line, can you recommend a US available good braid and pound test? What about 20lb Suffix 832, I have that and the PowerPro available. So in my case I should still fish my 200g jigs in this heavy current but just use the correct line? This is great information, wondering like on a scale of 1-10 the impact of line vs jig weight/profile? Sounding like line is most significant say 80% but perhaps 20% impact from weight/profile of jig? Thank you.

@@motleypixel Use the right line for starters. when you use the right line, it makes so much difference. 200g would be for 150-220 METERS of water. for 200ft, I would be using something like 60-80g with the right line, (PE1-1.5) The thinner your line, the lighter you can go on your jigs. If I was in your case, I would probably look at 10lb or even 8. 15 LB power pro consistently breaks at over 30lb. That's how wrong the labels are there is the US. @@motleypixel :) glad to help. If you could really just go and get the right stuff, in the depth you are fishing, PE 1.5 would be Perfect...not expensive at all too. Trust me, it's worth it and you will see the difference. Will change the way you look at things.

I agree 100%. Over in Hawaii, we began to slow pitch jig over reefs from 60ft to 300ft deep in 2016, by reading Japanese jigging websites. What was always stressed on the websites and Japanese slow pitch jigging videos was using the lightest jig that could get down to the desired depth, and using the thinnest braid. Normally the current is running pretty good where we fished so an 80gm Shimano Flat Fall had a hard time reaching 80 meters or 262 feet so we bumped the jig up in weight, but definitely 80gm were too heavy for 80 feet. Another thing overlooked often by recent jigging experts is the thinness and pliable-ness of the assist hooks. The assist hooks were meant to dance and flutter, and get sucked into the fish's mouth as you mention. If the assist cord is too stiff the hooks won't be in the correct position to be sucked in by the fish. I just discovered your channel today and really appreciate the technical information.

Great video. I just came across it trying to find information for slow pitching jigging. Your video is the best I came across yet there's alot of people on RU-vid that claim to know how to do it properly. But with no true experience like you have.keep the videos coming. Super informative 👌 👍 Do you have any issue with line twist when you omit the swivel and tie onto a solid ring? In theory the jig won't be spinning much because the solid ring is restrictive, but I wonder whether the jig's rocking motion can still twist the line 🤔

wow thanks there are so many great tips for beginners like me. i was planning to rig with bb swivels but we use sliders in 100m depth and now you made me question my choice. but how do you cope the risk of solid ring exposing the line cut by the split ring attached in heavy load? im just asking cause im quite at start of learning curve lol

The knot on the solid ring getting cut by the split ring is not a problem, in all my years of jigging, thats never been a problem.

How do you fish that long white jig at 23:20? Do you fish it straight up and down beneath a boat or do you cast it out to the distance and slowly jig it back to the boat? I guess it's good for strong currents when you need something that cuts through the currents quickly to get to the bottom as quickly as possible, huh? I would like to ask you the same questions for that big, fat red lure at 7:38, if you don't mind me asking. Thanks for this terrific video!

these are all slow jigs and are meant to be fished vertically. You don't cast them out. Different jigs are used for different current situations. The fat short ones are for low current situations, long ones for fast swift currents.

Hi Kit love yoir vids. So much so they are being incorporated into my binder on slow pitch. 1 question. When seeking out a ballbearing swivel for connecting leader to jig & hook Im unsure of what strength to choose. As you mentioned smaller is better but 1 must dial in entire connection assembly to include line strength, drag setting (1/3 line strength), & swivel lb test rating. Of course your assist cord needs to be sufficient but lets say its pe3 line do you double? triple? quadruple it? For lb test rating of swivel? Logic tells me at least 25% stronger than your line to keep it sm & stealthy but I may be way off. Ive got some of the pricey swivels manufactured with the solid ring in them already but they are pretty heavy duty. Thx in advance for your answer this stuff is so addicting Im at 150 jigs & counting.😄

I dont know what kind of swivels you are looking at, but if you look at the swivels from owner, cbone and other japanese companies, their 100lb swivels are pretty small. 80, even smaller.

Amen...i hear so much crap being pushed about slow jigging in the US now...micro jigging has been around for decades specifically in the trout fishing industry...i live Gulf side Florida...i heard the Indonesians introduced slow jigging to the Japanese?

No, slow jigging was developed in Japan. Micro spoons and soft plastics on jig heads were used on trout and panfish for a long time - in the US. Japan innovated and introduced things in saltwater.

Thin line is good until you get spooled/reefed or sharked every drop. I started with pe1 in Australia and every drop i had to re tie a leader. Im now trying pe2 to see if i can turn the fish around. My heavy setup is pe 3 and pe4 as I have absolutely no chance otherwise.

PE 2 is pretty much standard. If you can't stop the fish with PE 2, using slow jigs, maybe you should do fast jigs for the fish so you can pull back on them - slow jigging is a finesse technique developed so you can fish when the strikes dont come as frequent - it wasn't developed to replace fast jigging.

I'm just about to delve into slow jigging hence I'm a beginner. I've have yet to try jigging so I'm just going to buy some jigs. My concern is at the moment I have a PE1-3 rod which I guess is not bad since you mentioned PE2 is great for slow jig. I've been doing a ton of research. Finding videos like these but I've never come across anyone commenting about what would happen if you use a heavier jig. For example, I'm in Asia too so friends say rule of thumb is 1 gram per meter. What would happen if let's say you're fishing 40m-60m water but using 80 or 100 grams jig? I can't seem to find any answer to that. I've seen people using PE0.8-1.5 rods with 30g/40g jigs which I guess isn't suitable for my PE1-3 rod hence the question what would happen if you use heavier jigs in shallow waters

You don't feel a lot of strikes if you use jigs that are heavier than what's needed. Slow jigging is a finesse technique. So you only need as much weight as needed a slight imbalance on the system will cause you to lose sensitivity.

Hi Jim, there are a lot of ways to rig a slow jig. it largely depends on what you are fishing for - just to be clear with this, you need to understand how the jig moves - when you reel in and move your rod, the jig moves in one direction, when you give it slack, it could either slide backwards, flutter, or both. A fish's instinct is to strike at the head of a smaller fish to be able to swallow it, otherwise the spines will get the prey stuck in their throat. So when they strike a jig, they strike the end where the jig is moving towards - meaning if you are reeling and moving your rod, it will strike at the part where your leader is tied - if you give it slack and the jig is doing its secondary action (fluttering, sliding or both) it will be from the other end. So, if you only put one set, say on top, you will MOSTLY hook the fish when you are moving the jig up and rarely while it is given slack...vise versa when you put the hooks on the back. Putting two sets of assist hooks on both ends will ensure more hookups whichever direction the jig is taking.

The tackle shops have jigs but not a lot of choices and not much to choose from in the way of assist hooks. If you have a video or could make a video on making your own hooks it would be great. Even if hooks are available the people working don’t know enough to help choose which hook sets to use for a chosen design. I fish mostly between 65-80 feet deep. On occasion 100 feet deep for grouper and snapper but king mackerel, Bonita, and other toothy fish will be present. If I see birds and chopping water what would you do and use for jigs? A fast jig? Drop a slow jig at the edge of the pod? Very interesting way to fish. Thanks in advance for the reply.

I forgot what leader material and weight would you use? If the fish strikes at the top where your leader is attach I would think cutoffs would be a problem especially with toothy fish?

There is a lot of information about jigging in the channel Jim, and one of the planned videos is what jigs to choose. There are quite a few videos on how to make assist hooks as well - they are in separate playlists so please check the playlists. 65-80 feet, even 100 feet is still quite shallow. IF you have the right line, and if you only have one combo, the best lines are the Japanese lines - PE 2 on an ocea jigger 1500 is more than enough. The line is very important, Japanese braid is thinner than US spec braid. Hook sizing is important - choose a hook size that is around half the width of the jig, a little over is OK. The proper length varies from jig to jig - I discuss this on a video, but in a nutshell, the rear hooks are longer than the front set (leader side). These front hooks are also made with flouro carbon cored cords, this is to keep them from tangling on your leader. If you see birds diving and the fish boiling, I would not drop a jig, I would cast a popper or a stickbait. :) Jigs are fish fishing the bottom, you need something on the surface or ones that run just below the surface. Fast jigs are great when the fish are active and are the first few drops for me when we reach an area.

for toothy fish, you can use a short and thin wire trace, although I rarely use one if at all. just remember you only get cut when you are jigging up, not when you let the jig flutter, so if you know there are toothy critters around, just keep that in mind. As far as leaders go, for fishing in 200m, I use a long length of 40lb mono or flourocarbon, others use 50. in shallower water, like for the depths you mention, I mostly use 15 or 20lb mono or flourocarbon. The length of your leader matters since it catches water and causes drag. So the thinner the leader, the better it slices through the water and the better the movement of the jig. the longer your leader, the more drag, even thin ones. so if you want to use thick leaders, keep it short. you can get away with longer leaders when you use thinner ones. Slow Jigging is a finesse technique, so to get the most out of the system, you have to use thin lines, thin leaders and the smallest/lightest jigs to reach the bottom the standard is 1g per meter.

Hello Kit,my friend uses 8 rings instead of ball bearing swivels and almost always catches more fish than me. But if started catching fish when switching from 8 rings to swivels. Do you ever use 8 rings?

figure rings are pretty much the same, it works exactly like a round one - the main difference is the figure 8 protects your knot more because of the separation. I used to use it a lot, but didn't really matter. so for me, there is no concrete evidence if it is better or not. However, if it helps your confidence then that's a good thing. And there IS a difference when you are confidently working the jig and from just mechanically working it.

Great point about confidence. Probably the most important factor in really sticking it out and grinding when the fishing is tough, and taking the time to vary different techniques to see what the fish want. When you KNOW your jig is just killing it with action, it makes all the difference!

FC CORED not coated assist lines are stiffer. You want that for your front hook so you don't get a lot of the front hook snagging your leader.

Hey Kit, I know you already made a lot video's about how to make your own assist hooks and what to look out for while doing it and they where great. But here is my question, mostly because I can't find it, jave you already made a video with eyeless hooks where you tie two hooks an at a specific lengh of the line, and what kind of knot do you use, so that the knot does not slide and you can pull the line tight at the loose end you later cut off. I tried to make some double hooks but they all have a different length to the one I need, plus and minus a centimetre... I hope to use them for slowjigging.

Crash, there's a bit of a delay. I was filming this last night and something went wrong with the camera. It was the AC power Adaptor...it killed itself. hahahahahahaha!!!! I am charging the batteries now and a new adaptor is on it's way.

Slow jigging - overheads only. You can use spinning rods for fast jigging.

@@jongmacias1884 You can use the Kaiten spin for fast jigging. In one of their videos, they said that Gomoku rods are fast jigging rods - that you can use for slow jigging.

Just be clear and to make sure I'm understanding this. If I'm fishing in 150 feet I should be using a 50g jig instead of a 150g jig? That's a big difference! I need to get some smaller jigs...
