Ok guys it’s been awhile but this message is for Lonesome Dave’s kids , I play the blues today because of your father and Rod Price from Savoy Brown to Foghat They took it to a different level for me . Because of them I got into Muddy , Buddy . BB and many others . they were one of the best live bands I ever seen. Now this is for Alex & Andy The year was 1978. I went to see Foghat and rush. Foghat came on before and back then we had transistor radios after foghat ended they were interviewing rush before they came on and they said we really don’t want to go on after Foghat they were so good. True story. Old Comiskey Park in Chicago. Now guys because the sound was much better in the 90s go visit Foghat 1997 Dayton Ohio Live and watch them play Sweet home Chicago it was the best version I have ever seen of this song and I am from the Chicago area. Rod price was one of the most underrated slide guitarist Ever and Lonesome Dave was a great singer and a good guitar player in his own right but that whole band together with all the original members was killer. Thank you to Dave’s kids for getting you guys down A great blues rock band legacy that was so underrated one of my favorite bands of all time. I am sorry there is no Foghat without Lonesome Dave & Rod Price RIP Both of you

The best thing that ever happened to music was FM radio. Before then AM radio and top 40 stations just played the 2 minute 59 second singles that everybody had to comply with that was why bands like The Who started releasing longer songs on their albums knowing they wouldn't get airplay and then FM came along and the DJ's there would play Not only long version they would play whole album sides

I won tickets to the concert for this album and at the crescendo of the solo near the end there was a planned explosion. (Slow Ride was their final encore song) I was sitting with a friend just a little to the rear and side of the stage when the explosion went off. My friend Peter passed out from the explosion (combined with the pot and beer). We had back stage passes but I couldn’t wake Pete up and had just made the decision to leave him while I went back stage when one of the event staff members was able to wake him. Bands of this era regularly made my city a regular tour stop. $5 would get you in the door for a rocking good time. Many times we'd show up that afternoon and the roadies would let us help load in the show and get a ticket and maybe a t shirt. It was the 70's in flyover USA so they could get away with a lot. The only rules were don't climb in the rigging and don't pester the talent. Watching sound checks in the empty arena was very cool. Always dreamed of "running away with the circus" but by the time I was old enough it didn't seem that interesting anymore.

For a first-hand breakdown on the birth of Slow Ride, check out Bassfrontiersmag Nick Jameson of Foghat interview part 5. Nick Jameson (bass) and Roger Earl (drums) of Foghat talk about how a blizzard and resulting power outage at a Vermont recording studio along with an immanent tour both played parts in why there's a short and long version of Slow Ride. The band had worked out the long version through jam sessions, but while recording Slow Ride, the power went out just a bit over halfway through the song when the power lines fell in the snow storm. Five days later the power was restored and after listening to and mixing what they'd recorded before the power went out, they felt it was so good they decided to release what they had ( short version ) as the single. After the tour was over, they came back to the studio and added the second half to Slow Ride for the album version while completing the rest of the upcoming Fool For The City album.

Nick was originally in The American Dream a local Philly band. He recommended My Babe that he recorded on the only album of The American Dream. By the way he played Base and Piano and produced this entire Foghat album. This was his only album with Foghat.

This answers questions I’ve had since the 70s. Thank you, now I’m not so mad that a short version even exists! Still don’t know why the short version went on their greatest hits album.

@@kevinlogozzo3952 Yep, putting that short version on greatest hits was a huge letdown. Maddening infact! It's funny how some greatest hits packages aren't always the best songs or the best versions of songs. Back in the day, we took care of that by makeing up our own mix tapes. 😆

Jim Carrey did a great shoutout to this song in his acceptance speech at the MTV music awards in '99. He was in character as a quasi Jim Morrison and demanded that the producers include some Foghat in their music lineup. He was played offstage to Slow Ride.

RIP Lonesome Dave - I saw this band four times back in the day. Dazed and Confused is as close to the truth as it gets. I remember the first day of HS. Seniors from the rodeo club would lasso sophomores and ride them until the sophomore could buck them off their back.

Here in the true rock and roll capital of the world, Detroit Rock City, we never even knew a shorter version existed!. The very notion is unfathomable and downright unacceptable. Rock on!

What you guys heard was the radio edit. I first heard this on the radio was in 1975 and they FADED IT OUT. I didn't even know it ended on the album until my friend bought the album and played it and I felt ripped off by these radio stations who chopped that incredible song in half and I didn't even know it. I'm 60 and it still sounds so crisp and clean. I still blast that song on my car radio. Thanks for giving that long version a spin.

Foghat was a great live band. I remember this song from my sophomore year at college. This was a staple of every frat party. And it was a great way to challenge your woofers. Like you, I wonder how many Gen X babies were conceived to the long version of this song. LOL

Guys you may really want to check out the entire album, opens with "Fool for the City" then a few tracks in "Slow Ride" then "Terraplane Blues" cover of a Robert Johnson version, might want to check that little jewel out. Remember 1975 era Disco was coming on.

Other Foghat songs to consider: • "I Just Want To Make Love To You" from their 1977 Live album catches lightning in a bottle, nothing is better and I guarantee the false stops and restarts will completely exhaust A&A. • Stone Blue. The guitar solos are a dream come true.

Great review, and I'm glad that you guys finally got around to reviewing this one. A couple of things though: (1) I'm not sure why you had the "Fool for the City" album (1975) in the background when this version of the song came from the "Foghat Live" album (1977). (2) The bass player on this song was American Craig MacGregor. He joined Foghat in 1976 and replaced founding member, Tony Stevens. MacGregor was in the band from 1976-1982, 1984, and 2005-2015. Sadly, he passed away from cancer in 2018. (3) The children who contacted you were the lead singer and rhythm guitarist's, "Lonesome" Dave Peverett--not the bass player, Craig MacGregor. Peverett was a founding member and was with the band until he passed away from cancer in 2000. (4) You really need to listen to "Drivin' Wheel" from the 1976 "Night Shift" album. (5) The lead guitarist was Rod "the bottle" Price. He was a founding member and was known for his outstanding slide work which made the guitar "scream." He passed away in 2005. (6) The drummer, Roger Earl, is still playing with a new line-up for Foghat. He is a founding member and is the only one who has been with every version of the band since 1971. (7) It is absolutely criminal that these guys haven't been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In fact, they've never even been nominated.

Hogfat..I mean Foghat.. was comprised of the nucleus of Savoy Brown/The SB Blues Band that had unsung guitar god Kim Simmons as lead. Their first album identified Dave Peverret as "Lonesome Dave". Saw them way way back in the day
