We test the garden myth that copper wire (strips) can be a deterrent to snails and slugs. We test if slugs can overcome the little 'shocks' it receives whilst going over copper. Can copper be an effective deterrent for those pesky critters that love munching on veges.

There are no shocks, there is no dissimilar metal to make a battery, copper is top notch conductor of heat and also a metal which may react wit the slime to form a chemical irritant. Additionally was it pure copper wire?, or wire from an old transformer (or meant for a transformer) which is covered in a lacquer which would prevent the snail from actually contacting the metal?

Every strand of your copper wire is isolated with non conductive coating, that is why it does not work. Busted!

Thanks for putting this together. They still got through in the end, but it did seem to be a slight deterrent. Ughhh I tried this, egg shells, fine wood shavings and beer traps last growing season and I only had success with the beer.

Well, guess that's why I haven't been ending up choosing the copper wire.

Actually it does in fact work you need more then just an inch to two inches of it. If you had two to three inches it would have worked. I know this to be true because where I live slugs are very common and they are known to destroy peoples gardens here. With trial and error I have found that copper is the best none toxic method against slugs that won’t harm the plants, bees, and environment. You do need to use 2-3 inches wide of copper for it to be successful.

But it only suggests that a narrow horizontal ring of copper wire may not be that effective at containing slugs. It is not proof that copper is a poor deterent against slugs.

yup, that's correct. Next is the copper strip experiment.

My copper experiments showed it didn't work with my snails and slugs. I'm going to make some beer traps, proven technology. It makes humans stupid and slugs suicidal.
