As someone from a 3rd-world country this is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is very relatable, some people would think the tragedy of the children are just for shock value, but for us it is real life. Kidnapping babies and toddlers to force them to beg, kidnapping young girls for sex trade, blind beggars earning double is completely real, it wasn't made up for the movie. Yes these are uncomfortable topics, but I'd rather have them depicted on film than pretending it doesn't happen. The truth hurts, and it hurts for me to admit that this happens in my country, but I'm very thankful someone brought light into it. I was totally invested in Jamal and Malik, I personally know friends and family that went through this hardship. Eating rice and salt for lunch and dinner. Grafting and hustling until they were able to buy a house and a car. The characters and the story hits in a very authentic way for me.

I think Google calling it a romance threw you two off. It’s not a romantic movie so much as a overcoming horrible obstacles one - one in which Latika is a chance for Jamal to have a life he’s always been denied. In that sense, despite the brutality, the film is, ultimately, an inspirational one.

If your criteria for hit or miss is whether a movie shows real life issues (in a country that has a horrible caste system and not many opportunities if you're born poor), then you're gonna miss out on a lot of great films. This movie even has an unrealistic, "happy" ending that makes it nore palatable. Real life is not sunshine and roses. And kids grow up like that every day. Not just in India.
@TheInfo45
@TheInfo45 11 месяцев назад
I know that the concept of what these kids went through is hard to swallow but it is a reality. All around the world. Now you say that his character just seemed kind of displaced and unemotional. That is because of his survival instincts from childhood that have taken away all of those things that most of us would react to. It's the idea of survival and that money from the show guaranteed survival for him and latika. You can't really ask for a storyline that built up their love for each other because they were apart so much throughout their childhood and teenage years. This is a very powerful film that shows their connection at childhood and his connection to her is what keeps him alive keeps his drive going to make it to adulthood. Unfortunately his brother showed he was out for number one from the beginning. He did care about his brother and in a way he just kind of secretly hoped his brother would follow his lead. But that was not going to happen. What people can persevere through is an amazing idea even in the worst of circumstances. That is the main focal point of the story. Yes, he may not necessarily be your cup of tea of movies but give it its props for depicting such a a story of the survival and perseverance.

I see a lot of people mention how this film won best picture in 2008 which it did and that is important, but in my opinion I dont think the Oscars at this point mean that much anymore, I mean it does but I think throughout most oscar history, I don't think they've gotten it right, in 2018 or 2019 I should say Green Book won best picture, very good movie but it beat Black Panther and BlackKklansman, most people,including me would agree they're both superior, hell even The Hate You Give, Mission Impossible Fallout and Hereditary were all better and they weren't even nominated, I just feel that Oscar's shouldn't be the only calling card for certain movies, that doesn't always mean it's the best film, film is subjective absolutely but there are some that are just unanimous for the best film of the year that actually deserve it like Everything Everywhere All At Once, I think that Slumdog is a great movie overall but that being said I still think the best movie of that year was The Dark Knight

This film stands as one of those rare pieces that has grown considerably better with time for me. In 2008, I hated it. Didn't think it deserved the Best Picture win, kinda slow, too depressing, etc, but I rewatched it a couple years back and my god did it hit hard. It's a truly beautiful film. I also think it worked more for me as a full grown adult because it demonstrated how we build life experience...how all these seemingly insignificant pieces can come together in surprising ways. I'm no theist, but it's really interesting how life works like that sometimes and that's something I've noticed more and more over the last 15 years.

to realice the real love you have to get rid of the corny aspect you give to it, Jamal share the shelter, defend her from Salim, make her laugh, find her and set her free with Salim's help, that's why she save Jamal from Salim's Colt, he finds her for a second time and that's why Salim let her go, and were she's gonna go? we all know.

Sorry to disagree but this was not about the love story per say you were too focused on that. it’s about the journey and REALITY of the situation within different cultures and how they have other ways of falling in love,it’s mainly about him saving latika more than just being in love he felt responsible for latika since they left her behind .. well salim did but he still felt deep guilt about it and that turned into love in his mind in time. I do agree they didn’t show nearly enough progression of her love mostly her surrendering and circumstances but while that doesn’t add to the relationship arch it adds to the realistic portrayal of the character in real life in India and the novel itself it also might have been intentional to create more focus on Gamal’s arch. You were thinking about it from a progressive relationship point of view I think which isn’t necessarily the way other cultures operate I think this is where blockage of acceptance for this film was created. Need to embrace the diversity and understand the struggles to relate to the depth of the story. You think it’s depressing film while it’s just the reality of kids in India especially Muslims. There’s a good reason Pakistan split from India and became independent both countries lost a million citizen each in that rebellion because of the torment Muslim Indians went through by Hindus. The novel is also partially inspired by a real winner of the show and the acting was beyond phenomenal I think 6 is way too low of a rating for such a masterpiece but everyone is entitled to their own opinion the music score / cinematography editing was truly masterful, i rated it a solid 8.5/10

@@littlematchltm This movie is representative of the life in Dharavi slums, which is a 2.39 sq km slum located in Mumbai. I don't think it really tells you anything about India outside of that tiny location. Westerners tend to romanticise a lot about poverty and violence in developing countries so that they can feel better about themselves all the while ignoring all the developmental strides that happen in those countries. Slumdog Millionaire is a perfect example of that. This movie is condescending toward India and pretty much every Indian I know, including myself hates it.

Indian here, and there were many moments where I thought the movie missed. The first part of the movie was actually pretty damn great and pretty true to what goes on these slums, I promise you it is probably even worse. The riots which killed Jamal and Salim's mother was a real thing which happened for a over a month between Hindu and Muslim groups where almost a 1000 people died in the December/January of 1992/93. It was initially instigated by HIndu nationalists. Anyway there are many such cases in our history instigated by both sides. It's a horrible reality which we are still facing today. The first part of the film was actually pretty great and very realistic and believable. And yes I agree Jamal and Latika's relationship was not developed at all and was the weakest part of the movie. But what really got me, is that I quickly was put off when the characters started speaking fluent English. This was extremely immersion breaking. I mean when people from the Mumbai slums start speaking the same level of fluent English as my classmates growing up which used to be one of the top schools in Asia at the time with alumni who went on to Ivy League universities like Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, Oxford, etc, it is really hard to take anything seriously. Honestly, they should have stuck with Hindi the entire time and hell our version of Who wants to be a Millionaire is actually in Hindi and was weird seeing it play out in English. I mean don't get me wrong English is an official language of India and many can at least understand and even people from the slums can communicate but it is very broken English mixed with a lot of Hindi and other local languages. I just did not like this aspect of the movie at all because, I was cringing the entire time. Now I understand a non Indian would probably not have this issue. The Who Wants to be a Billionaire i couldn't find believable. The host of the show and the cops were cardboard caricatures, one note and uninteresting. Tbh for me the best part of the movie was when it focused on the slums and the organized crime aspect and Salim's story. That was far better. I do disagree that this was a love story, this was more of a journey and a coming of age sort of tale, regardless the relationship between Jamal and Latika should have been far better developed considering they are the main characters. I did enjoy the movie quite a bit, it was definitely entertaining and we saw a side of India which we don't really see in media all that much for which I am very grateful, but you can safely say I still have serious problems with it. There were just many moments where I found to be immersion breaking. Yea i do not know how this movie won 8 Oscars.

I read an article in 2009 that after the success of the movie, the parents of the little girl in the movie, we’re selling her in the streets of Mumbai for money. She had been in a big Hollywood movie and she was worth more. In Mumbai and parts of the Middle East, it’s legal to sell children or arrange a child to marry men for money. I heard it on the news and on the radio talk about the situation at the time. Activists did step in but it was nothing they could do, I don’t know what happened to the little girl because it’s a depressing and sad thing that I didn’t want to know.

This was actually an exploration of life for orphan children in an Indian slum, tied together with the device of the game show. While i liked the movie, it doesn't really hold a candle to the book (Q & A is the name of the book) it was based upon imo. Now, take what i will say with a grain of salt because i haven't actually read the book in ten years now but: The premise is similar, a young man raised in the streets gets a chance to win millions of rupees. The difference is the reason he got onto the show, and iirc every single story/question except for one are different than in the movie. I read it a year before the movie was made and thought the book was way better. The book was also less of a romance movie and more of a drama, as his love interest isn't an ever-present character. The reason the main character entered into the competition is kind of a plot twist that is revealed near the end of the book and i found it great. The book is also heavier than the movie iirc but i could be wrong, since i was in my early teens when i read it first.

If Latika knew the answer it would have been perfect if she was the one who gave it and it would have made the last run even more suspenseful. Some would say the point was that she declared her love, if that's what all mattered then Jamal should have lost... and it would have been fine, he did it for Latika and he had already won her heart. But I am sorry, the premise of the film is that every event or major protagonist in Jamal's life or destiny allowed him to have a good answer, Latika could have known the answer by herself or heard someone in the street giving the answer and then run to help Jamal... but the way he gets the right answer totally defeats the whole purpose of the story, he won by luck. Could have been one of the greatest underdog movies but it had to come up with a cheap feel good ending with a Bollywood dance that made no sense... (oh yeah, Indian movie then the foreign viewer must have a Bollywood moment...)

This is one of those movies I get frustrated with our western culture. I hate it when we pretend to need a movie to open our eyes to the life of these children. We know all that, we just choose to not worry about this too much until a movie shows up so we can have our moment of showing other people around us how shocked we were by loving this movie. We know this shit and we don't really care, because it's not happening to us, which is reasonable in our imperfect world, but don't be all drama when a movie like this shows up. It's an okay movie but nothing more, don't pretend to like this movie more than you do because of the situation of children in India. I'd rather you ignore it than you fake the outrage.

Latika could have been taken out of the movie, and you would have missed nothing. I feel the script was originally written just about the brothers. Hence the title. I feel they added Latika last minute with re-shoots. If you notice most of the scenes she is in, is one spot, one area, and basically one to two minute lines. It just seems they added her last minute.

You missed this one because altough it takes place in India and has Indian characters it`s actually a Hollywood movie and they fail to capture the stuff that makes actual Indian films endearing: soul and character.

Who says you're wrong? Where is it written that you have to like everything you watch? Yours is a reaction channel and you reacted honestly to two hours of awfulness to kids as you would. There was some talk at the time "Slumdog Millionaire" was released along the lines of why would anyone put stuff like what happens in this movie on screen for audiences to watch and that's also an honest reaction. The response to such commentary was generally about how millions of kids in the world have horrible lives and privileged audiences could use an occasional reminder of how how good they have it but, again, is that something an entertaining night out at the cinema needs to do? I thought it was a great movie and a surprising best picture winner - and the music kicks ass - but it's not a movie for everyone. All the favorite movies on my list are not for everyone, and that's fine. 🙂

I love you both, however this is NOT at its heart a romance movie or I might agree with you more, it's certainly not a perfect film by any means. It is called Slumdog Millionaire not Slumdog's True Love, so your focus on that specific aspect to rate the movie is frankly baffling. This seems more a desire of an American couple downgrading a film for them not being comfortable seeing the realities of harsh lives outside of your comfortable bubble and needing to find fault so you can reject it as being without merit.

Wow, I don't think it's any more possible for you to miss the mark than with that screed. And you certainly haven't the first clue to Matthew and Emily's character to make such a flippant and narrow-minded assessment. It's an okay movie, some love it, some don't. Oscars go to classics, and Oscars go to duds. Maybe just stop with the ad hominem attacks and be less hypocritical to your handle. I'm sayin' to chill out, 'sang froidian'.

I feel this is a film that's lost a little of its luster over time. The heavy-handiness of the coincidences for the answers overshdow the relationships between Jamal and his brother/Latika. The fact that it won Best Picture explains the weakness of the nominees in a year which The Dark Knight and WALL-E were not nominated. The Academy changed from five nominees to six-ten the year after, and that decision had its benefits and flaws afterward.

India has one of the highest, if not the highest rate of child sex slavery in the world. You may not like it in a movie but it is a reality that is reflected in this film. I'm guessing you probably wouldn't like the Brazilian film CITY OF GOD either

Slumdog Millionaire is a bad Movie. The Editing, the Story is horrible. It is not realistic in any way. It is a poorly made horror story. Let's say the brothers survive the Genocide of their City. In real life they would not have survived long without their mother to support them. Kids left alone in India will quickly die, from exposure. The 🌞☀️ Sun's heat will quickly kill people without shelter. Poverty is so bad in India they would die of starvation. How these boys were supposed to have survived, by stealing, would have put them in early graves. In India the public will kill you for stealing. The government will 🪓 off your hand. Salim is a very poorly written character. He is this psycho child that will kill a baby and report kids to their villian kidnapper. Then he saves his brother from being blinded but is Cruel to Lativia a little girl crying in the rain. Than he threatens to murder his Brother if he will not leave because he wants to Rape Lativia. Salim is not remotely believable. Too many villians, who are all Comic Book style over the top Evil, in this Garbage movie. The $hit scene was disgusting and out of place, it was gross not funny. This Ignorant movie won Best picture and a lot more Oscars... 😮 😮 😮😮 The Oscars are Political and have been since the beginning getting to be now for 20 years the politically correct awards. The Best is not who wins the Oscars.
