That's the point of the film. The Shawshank "Redemption" is about Red's redemption. People think the movie is about Andy, but it's not. Andy never changes. He's always full of hope. Being thrown in jail for a crime you didn't commit is absolutely horrifying! Brilliant writing and brilliant acting. Also, "I hope I can make it across the border. Exactly. If Andy had gotten released and exonerated in the first ten minutes no one in the world would give a crap. The fact he went through so much, like a modern-day Job, and still was able to not just feel hope for himself, but was able to instill it in others is what makes this movie one of the most powerful films ever made. Andy Dufresne was a quiet, kind and caring, unassuming, non-violent man whose soul could never be shattered by the savagery he was surrounded by for decades. Instead, he molded that violent world to HIS making, finding a way to bring enlightenment, joy, and most importantly HOPE to some of the most hopeless souls he could ever meet. Andy was a long-suffering angel among men. ESPECIALLY when you consider he had finished the tunnel YEARS before he escaped. The reason he held off was PRECISELY because he knew what the likely consequences would be for his fellow prisoners. For before the Warden killed Tommy (adding a blatant MURDER to his crimes) Andy probably felt if he escaped, even if he disclosed the Warden's graft, he might survive such a scandal, and would take his revenge out on all Andy's friends and associates. It was only once the Warden killed Tommy that Andy felt he might have enough to get the State Police involved and risked it.

You can tell a true masterpiece when the film grows over your lifetime. When you always discover a little more. When it grabs you early but still years/decades later. Maybe in a slightly different way. I think sometimes Andy is a stoic. He often offends the guards but at the same time he also helps them and so many inmates because he wants to be free in his mind. He remains the master of himself. About his feelings, expressions and words. He does not want to become an animal because of external circumstances. If you remain free in your mind, no one can imprison you. Never.

Jake is actually a raven, which is another layer of symbolism within the film itself: Ravens are associated with mortality, but also with intelligence, communication, and knowledge; hence it is fitting that he reside in the library with Brooks, a purveyor of knowledge. In Ireland and Scandinavia, ravens were also associated with kingship, and Brooks was king of the prison in so much that he’d been there the longest and had wisdom to impart to the other inmates. When Brooks releases Jake, it symbolizes the loss of his knowledge, his importance, his ‘kingship’, so to speak. The king died and his faithful servant was released from service… … symbolic as the Viking sagas.

FYI Ash, the character being named "Red" isn't symbolism because he killed somebody. This was from a book and the character was a red haired Irishman nick named Red and his comment in response to being asked why he was called that "Maybe because I'm Irish" was a nod to the book. Also the term "Uncle Sam" is an American term for the Federal Government originated from a character in military recruiting posters. There's other references that you misinterpret but not your fault as they are things that are "Americanisms". Love your channel.

This movie is an absolute masterpiece. From the cinematography, to the flawless acting, the perfect writing, the great music, the pacing, everything is on point. A universal tale of hope and humanity. I must have seen it at least 20 times but it just never gets old. "I guess I just miss my friend" gets me every single time, and Brooks... Plus it has one of the best payoffs in the history of cinema. What a perfect gem that movie is. Of course now you have to see The Green Mile, even though it's probably going to destroy Hannah. 😅

"Red" was short for "Redding", the character's last name. In the novel, he's Irish. But Freeman and Robbins were perfect in their roles. Hannah picked up (in detail) on what Andy actually did, faster than just about any first-time viewer I've seen on RU-vid. You two should review/react to Denis Villeneuve's movie "Arrival". Also some emotionally rough scenes, but a very intelligent science fiction story, full of interesting ideas.

Morgan Freeman’s character was named Red in the original story because the character was Irish with red hair. When Freeman was cast in the role, just to be funny, the writer and director kept the name in there and had Morgan say he was Irish.

Don't think Hannah would like Brooks as much if she knew what he did to get in there. I still get emotional at that scene. Just proves how amazing this movie is.

My favourite reaction channel reacting to my favourite film of all time. Totally agreed with you Ash about the life lessons that this story can teach people, and I felt so bad for Hannah knowing that the Brooks scene would likely break her. They simply don't make films like this anymore - all the Marvel crap they pump out these days doesn't interest me one bit. Get her on to the Godfather series next, Ash! 😄

Ash, don't say that it is too late for Brooks to find a wife. It is never too late to find a companion. Hannah, you are like Will Graham from Hannibal lol. Feeling so deep, understand everyone's point of view. Love you guys! ❤️

Sometimes the stories with the most beautiful endings have to take the longest, gnarliest, bloodiest scenic routes to get to that ending…..when Hannah kept saying “why are u making me watch this??”, we prob all knew she’d change her mind in the end …. I think she literally couldn’t see how it could possibly be amazing. Anyway, 25 years ago my first girlfriend made ME watch this, so, women get behind this movie too just like ash was, & im sure that Hannah, in the future, will urge someone else to watch it also, & I guess my point is that she didn’t see that coming in the beginning or even at the halfway point, and because of that it was such a beautiful reaction to a beautiful film, as always…..& lastly, thank u guys, as always.

Those high trousers on Brooks was the style for that generation, a style that was still true for another 20 years. When I was 17 in 1986, my mom took me to buy a suit. The tailor was an old man. I wore the pants the one does nowadays, and he kept pulling them up, telling my mom, "He'll learn to wear them right." I never did. 🙂

When I was in my late teens, I worked a quarter of a mile from this old prison where the movie was filmed, in Mansfield Ohio. It’s the old Mansfield reformatory and the new prison is built behind it . They still offer tours at the old prison , as well as weddings (yes, I know, who would want to do that? )and such. I find it very creepy inside and suffocatingly depressing inside. You know that type of abuse and Murder really went on in those times. There’s also a cemetery on the prison grounds with simple white crosses to represent the deceased

I don't think Jake betrayed Brooks. How would he have known where Brooks went to after he was released from Prison? Crows are smart, not omniscient, and him finding Brooks would have been like looking for a needle in a haystack. I definitely empathized with Hannah's tears for Brooks, that part makes me weep every time. Great reaction, thank you guys!

To Jake the Snake: Animals that grow up in captivity rarely survive in the outside. To the "fat man" in the beginning: You have no idea, who is calling for his momma, when one is in pain and fear. Even the biggest guys are crying for momma. And thats okay. I saw them.
