Another Microphone Review: • Rode NT1 vs NT1A: Thes...
Time Stamps:
Intro: 0:00
SM57 or SM58: 0:26
Rode NT1: 1:21
Acoustic Guitar Shootout: 2:40
USB Microphones: 3:56
Conclusion: 5:26
Why would I get a SM57 over any condenser or USB microphone? Well the SM57 or SM58 is the best microphone to start with, period. This is because they don't capture the room with as much sensitivity as other microphones, and they aren't nearly as noisey!
Thanks for watching :)

NT1 does sound better, almost sound magical with some clarity and deepness at the same time. But environmental noise is a bummer.

condenser microphones really, really need a treated room in order to negate the room reflections but having said that, you can post EQ and again, if you are careful of positioning, the upper frequencies captured by a condenser microphone, especially on vocals is preferable to a dynamic mic.
@Unethical.Dodgson
@Unethical.Dodgson Год назад
Using a small diaphragm mic like the c02 or the lewitt 040 or something requires less room treatment and you do get a nice realistic sound. You pick up more low frequency sounds with larger diaphragm mics. Depends on what you really want. (I'm not saying that small diaphragm mics don't pick up low frequencies but they're less susceptible to bad resonances at low frequencies. So less room reflections, basically) Dynamic mics are just fine for podcasts, streams, singing etc. But you really do want that detail of a condenser for VO stuff. So you probably invest in some basic sound dampening in that case :)

I'm a photographer starting a podcast and not a musician (sorry 'bout those piano lessons and high school band, Mom!), and I am a major binge watcher of your channel. Love your style, the information you present, and the way you present it. And also really appreciate your guitar playing, and the beautiful vocals of Ethan Toga that you featured on a previous video. When you played the guitar with those black fingernails in this video I halfway expected you to break out into "More Than Words" LOL.

Good info. Def going to pick the 57 up when I have a budget for a new mic because my new apartment is proving hard to sound treat on my non existent budget. When I started recording I had a blue yeti sitting around, and once I plugged it into my interface it proved a surprisingly decent mic. I’m still learning gear, but I play professionally and have been recorded on much better mics that I liked the results of a lot less. I’ve been pretty happy with the results I’ve learned how to get out of it. I’d be very interested to hear what you think of it as a regular (non-usb) mic if you think that’s worth your time and money to review!

I totally agree, I would use SM57 over NT1, condensers, and of course USB mics, especially in a room that is not sound-proofed/sound-treated. SM57, Beyerdynamic M201 TG, and sE V7 are all excellent mics for podcast or VO. I even returned EV RE20 after comparing sounds with sE V7. Also, Lewitt LCT 440 and AKG P220 condenser mics are really good for spoken word . Thanks for this video.

@@TheVagineWhisperer I think sE V7 (idk about V7X) and SM57 are excellent for most voices; I did use e935 for some time but felt it lacked a bit of low so returned but could work for your voice (sound from e935 is warm and clear, and build quality is excellent). Also, you get different sound profiles depending on what audio interface you use your mic with (I use Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen, SSL 2+, and Audient iD 14 MkII).

Hi, great video!, the sm57 has been for a long time a candidate for my Studio Setup, his versatility makes all so compact and good but, i got to ask, do you have a sort of preset or an Eq applied to the sm57 in this video? The mic makes your voice incredibly crisp and clear, it makes me wonder if this is really the microphone i've been wanting to get. Keep up the good work on these videos man!

I was also thinking the 57 would be one that would be used "until the day I die." I was also thinking that if I got more serious about recording that I'd eventually want to buy a higher quality condenser microphone. But what I hadn't considered is the fact that I don't yet have a good room for recording. So this great point settled it for me. Thanks! P.S: I used to use the Radiohead bear as an avatar. Great video, and man, GREAT guitar playing! I do have to say, when the condenser came into play, there was the "blanket taken off" effect. But only in direct comparison. For a mix, the 57 might even be preferable, especially for strumming, 'cause it's so much more forgiving. One thing I would recommend is to point the mic pretty much where you pointed it, but away from the sound hole. There's a lot of low level woof coming out of that thing (Didnt listen to your video on headphones, so I won't say it was present here, but that would be a good way to avoid it, short of using a high pass filter, which is also always a good idea.)
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 3 года назад
I tried to point it at an angle to the sound hole so it wasn’t getting that woof, it’s about 3-4 inches away at around a 45 degree angle if I remember correctly, mic’ing an SM57 is definitely a bit more challenging than a condenser for acoustics though haha and thanks for your kind words!!
@chrisw5742

Makes sense. Happen to have both for home recording. NT1 is extremely sensitive to room noise, SM57 (with Fethead) a bit less. For both I have to hang blankets all over the room to get good sound. NT1 sound is balanced and very true, sm57 sound cuts through, a bit harsh in comparison, still very usable.

You just answered a big question I had about USB mics! I have the 7RYMS AU-1 (I think that's what it is...) Which has a large diaphragm, 20Hz-20kHz, 192... It really sounds very good. Anyway, I was thinking that doing the digital conversion and stuff within the mic would possibly be a good thing, as it would factor out cable length and different connections between the capsule and the computer. I hadn't considered that those processes might cause issues by being in the same housing. Great channel! You helped me decide to get my King Bee II!

This is the way. I started out with a large diaphragm condenser, but in my room it picked up evvverrrrything, so after years of wanting one, I got an RE20, and that is absolutely amazing - favorite mic of all time and the daily driver, but I wanted another option that was less bulky for times where I'm at a location other than my house. I opted for a Beta 57a for its supercardioid pattern instead of the normal 57 because I wanted it to be even more focussed. It sounds a tad different too - not better, just different, and in a way that I prefer for my voice over the normal 57, which by the way also would have been completely great. The 57a really gives the RE20 (and everything else) a run for its money because I can get almost the exact same sound out of it. I'm sure most people wouldn't even know when I'm on either mic due to the (mild) eq and comp I have on it. I can tell that the RE20 is richer, more detailed and just more open sounding, but it's soooo nuanced. and in the real world, they might as well be the same mic when the recording is played back.

first off great vid! great comnaprison and explanations !! i dont if people mentioned already or if you are already aware but its not the sunset that's causing the craziness in the white balance on your vid. its the wb settings. you probably set it to auto. and then for whatever it jumps back and forth since it cant decide what to do - wb of the outside window which is different from the one in the room . you might as well have had the same auto settings on exposure. sooo long story short just manually adjust everything and youll be great all over!

Some thoughts: Couldn't agree with you more. Tried an SM7b and an AT4047 for years for vocals. Meticulously treated the room. But I always felt like I had either had to add too much reverb or I felt like I was licking the listener's ear. I found myself trying to make each mic less clear and clean. Heard that RHCP always used the SM57 for vocals. I tried it (with the foam pop filter) and kabam! (Kinda reminds me of '40s starlets being filmed with vaseline smeared on the lens, or when we first got HDTV and we could see the newscasters' nose hairs.) My tips for recording vocals: Make a "booth" with padded moving blankets, or build one of those boxes your head goes in. Stay 12" - 18" from the SM57 and hit the vocals hard/sing loud. One of those screen pop filters seems to help a tad too. You can make one from a coat hanger and panty hose. For me anyway, that fits in the mix with minimal EQ and effects. Oh, and for some reason, the SM58 just doesn't work as well. No idea why. They tell me it's the exact same element. Check out the old clips of Yes from the movie Yessongs--all SM57s. Great sound. I noticed that Tom Petty and Billy Squier always used them live too. I know it depends on what you're looking for. If you're going for a Nora Jones or Frank Sinatra sound, probably a Neumann or something. For podcasters, SM57 is a great choice as you mentioned, but also because it's less in the way visually than many other mics. To save on a computer interface, look for something used on reverb.com or ebay. But be careful to check out reviews before buying.

Thanks for the tips. Will be starting to record and am on the RU-vid hunt for trying to figure out the best mike. And love the hanger and panty hose idea hahaha, what a way to budget! Lol!

Been watching lots of your videos lately ever since I've discovered your channel, and I'm loving them (really). I have a question here, can the SM57 really do a great job in a not-so-quiet environment? To be precise, I'm living with my family who happen to have no sense of quietness, talk real loud, doors slamming, and oh there is a highway outside of my house so I should be expecting some vehicles noises, and neighbourhood full of dogs so I should be expecting some barking noise as well, plus my rooms are not acoustically treated, and I have only a corner in the living room and my bedroom to record... fyi I'm gonna record acoustic guitar and vocals as I'm mainly gonna do acoustic covers and songs. With my situation described, would you really suggest me getting the SM57 if I were to seek your opinion? Sorry for the long ass question though lol but I'm desperately in need of help to make decision as my friends suggest my getting a AT2020 but I'm afraid about the noises part... One more question, does the SM57 pick up more hiss than the condensers?
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 2 года назад
I would definitely not get a 2020 in that environment! There are worse condensers for room rejection, but it will still pick up allll that noise. The SM57 will do absolutely great, you may hear more noise in the headphones than you will in the final mix (because headphones tend to really emphasize your mix because the audio image is more detailed and a bit blown out), but trust me it will be double or triple the effectiveness at room rejection. On the hiss, yes, it will "hiss" slightly more but this is a result of a number of factors including preamp levels and RF transfer (cable management stuff), but nothing even close to bad :)

@@AudioHaze Appreciate your thoughts. If that's the case, I might consider picking up the 2i2 bundle + SM57 so that I will have 1 condenser and 1 dynamic to play with to see what could I do with them, and still fit in my budget, as initially I was planning to get the 2i2 + AT2020 + M40x, which costs almost the same as the 2i2 bundle + SM57 (from the deal I've found at least). And to be honest, I rather not to spend more on the AT2020 since it doesn't sound significantly better than many mics among that price range, including the one comes with the 2i2 bundle (just my opinion, I may be wrong tho), and with some EQ and reverbs and stuffs, people wouldn't know which mic you use (again, just my perspective), and I rather just use something usable and good enough until I have a healthier cash flows to get something like a NT1A or NT1, or even any of the Lewitt. So by any chance have you tested the HP60 MkIII and CM25 MkIII (the headphones and mic come with the 2i2 bundle) and what are your thoughts? Will you think the mic and headphones that come along with the bundle will be "impressive" enough to be used for at least 1 or 2 years to come? Or to be precise on my question, does the HP60 MkIII sound flat/good enough for recording & mixing work?

It's essentially the same thing as their SM58, but without the pop filter. The screen they put on the 57 makes it better for pressing against guitar cabs or things like that, but not as great for plosive protection. complete novice here, wanting to record vocals and my classical cordoba guitar with one mic and prob focusrite scarlett 2i2 (on MBP M1 16" or ipad pro M1) Literally starting from scratch with equipment, DAW, and KNOWLEDGE .... Yesterday, guitar center sold me the focusrite scarlett 2i2, and the shure M58 MIC (along with a mic cable and 1/4" audio cable) ... I'll be recording and learning all this in a 400 sq ft Brooklyn apartment, so acoustic environment is NOT ideal, AND I do NOT want to incite angry calls from neighbors to "management". Do you think the Focusrite/SM58 is a good combo? I will also occasionally be adding Yamaha psr e373 to the mix, and hope the 2 inputs on the audio interface will allow that if I'm using just one mic for vocals/guitar.... Have I made the right choices? Should I have gotten the SM57? Or even a second mic to aim ONLY at guitar, with separate mic for vocals? Would the focusrite SOLO have been sufficient? FWIW, this is NOT even intended to serious production, but just tinkering around, at first, and if all goes well, I may upgrade relevant components over time. Oh, one last thing: The connections instructed by Guitar Center assumed I'd have my keyboard in the loop as the starting point, with the audio interface in between, then connected to my device or MBP.... If I am NOT using the keyboard, but only my non amped acoustic guitar and vocals via a single dynamic mic, and the Focusrite (or other recommended audio interface) how do I connect the 1/4' audio cable to my MBP? Thanks for not laughing, or at least I HOPE you are not 🙃(but of course you are ...lol)

Hi, I have a question.. I make an ASMR Unboxing video in my channel. Now I'm using Samson C02 super cardioid pencil condenser mic. The problem is, it has a high self noise (22dB) and when I edit my recording even if I use RX to reduce it, the inherited noise left were still high. I want to upgrade my microphone to get the best ASMR experience. The option is to get NT5 or NT1.. NT5 has 16dB self noise and NT1 is 5dB as you know. My room is "quite" with no fan/pc/refrigerator etc but my room is untreated. My question is, should I go to NT1 for best sound experience or go with NT5 with only 6dB self noise upgrade but better in untreated room? thanks!
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 2 года назад
Ooh okay so since ASMR usually has a lot of sensitive and gain on preamps, I would definitely recommend the NT1, it will be super quiet for you needs. Since you'll be speaking quietly anyways I don't think room reflections will be a big deal. Just make sure the environment around you isn't too noisy :) for example I live on a busy street so I usually go with dynamic. But for ASMR, I would say NT1 all the way

The thing is, I have a SM58, what do you recommend me to do? buy the interface with a SM57 or NT1? (I don´t have treated room), or stay with the SM58 and just buy the Motu M2? My concern is if the SM58 can do the job of recording voice and acoustic guitars like de SM57 and get a good quality sound.
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 3 года назад
Hey thanks for reaching out man! It depends on what you need, are you trying to recording vocals and guitar at the same time? If so then you'll need two microphones (or at least one condenser microphone). If you want to record both at the same time, I would grab a 57 (or any condenser just be mindful of your room and where you record) and honestly I would put more budget in your microphone and buy a cheaper interface. The MOTU is great but the Presonus Audiobox USB does the same stuff for half the price! Your 58 will be super solid for vocals, no need to change that. If you're not recording acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time, no need for another mic, your 58 will work!
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 3 года назад
Basically: Recording vocals and guitar separately? 58 works great, buy whatever interface you want but I would recommend a cheaper one (more microphone money!) Recording vocals and guitar at the same time? 58 + 57 or a condenser, just keep in mind your room sound if you go with a condenser. I would buy a cheaper interface and put more money into your microphone choice.

For Piano recording (assuming you're talking acoustic piano, not a keyboard or anything)), this may be one of the few times I recommend a condenser instead of a dynamic like the SM58. For vocals, yes the 58, but for piano, I would probably go with at AT2020, which is the same price. It will pick up more of your room, but its hard to get a good sound out of a piano through something like a Sm58, in my opinion. And the AT2020 will do great for vocals, just more of the room sound than the 58 :)

Hey great guitar playing and thanks for explaining SM57 so well. Would you consider upgrading it to e.g. Bayerdynamic M201 TG? Or something else? For better acoustic guitar/sound effects/voice tone capture. I will still need to work from untreated and quite noisy room though. I was also curious for shotgun mic for this application like Audio-Technica AT 875 R. Thank you.

Are there any reasons to choose one over the other (SM57 vs SM58)? They are both the same price and I think they might have the same internals (according to Shure’s website).

Definitely! The main difference is their grill, the 58 has a built in pop filter for voice, and the 57 has a grill more suited to be placed on instruments and speakers. There are some subtle differences in tone, but in general, buy the 58 for vocals and buy the 57 for instruments (I'm a guitarist and happen to have a 57, which is why I use it for voice. If I had a 58 I would use it for these videos) Hope that helps!

@@AudioHaze how does unscrewing the grill from the SM58 then compare to the SM57 for instruments and then how does adding a windscreen/pop filter (such as the A2WS) then compare for vocals? I am interested in vocals primarily but I do need to be able to record instruments as well, just less often.

@@fivestatedrive Unscrewing the grill will add a presence boost (although minimal) to the SM58, adding the A2WS to the SM57 should (in theory) soften the high end presence of the SM57, but again, pretty minimally. I personally would get the 57 and then get the A2WS for the most flexibility in tone and use :)

@@AudioHaze thank you for your response! I asked this question before I saw your video comparing the 57, 58, and 7B and feel like you covered what I was wondering well enough and I'm absolutely going with the 57.

Both sound great for the acoustic recording you did Rick, but I noticed different positioning, seemed like the NT1 was placed along about the 12 fret and the SM57 seemed aimed at the soundhole, givin it more low end. Anyway, as usual, I enjoyed your comparison. And by the way, I just ordered the NT1a, I have a SM57 and 58.

Absolutely! That would be because the 57 is a dynamic and needs to be much closer to produce a proper sound, having the 57 at the same distance as the NT1 would have made it pretty thin and quiet :)
