Hey creative people! Feeling stuck at few hundred followers? Is it too late to start an Instagram account or RU-vid channel in 2020? Today I want to talk to you about your social media art profile.
Several artists told me that they struggled to grow and reach their target audience. After months of consistent posting, original content, they only got a few new followers. Sometimes even less than the amount of posts! What could be done to boost your social media influence? What's hurting your growth? You might be doing those 7 things wrong on your social media.

Another thing is that number of followers isn’t always what is important, it’s more of a question of engagement and what the purpose of your social media is to you. I run a small animation studio and despite not running ads and having less than a thousand followers we still get clients and other opportunities from our social media. Depending on what you want to do with your creative career you might not need to go viral.
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 3 года назад
👋 If you can find quality client with a small following, you don’t need to scale up. Being small is also a nice choice in this uncertain time.
@ClickerFest

Do you DM them or do you let them come to you?
@gnowra
@gnowra 3 года назад
@@ClickerFest a bit of both but also I can’t speak highly enough of word of mouth clients. Some of our early clients were friends of friends who found our social media via conversations. I know a lot of other creative folks who started in a similar way. it’s really valuable just to be nice and to make sure your friends know about your business (I’m not saying to be pushy to your friends, just to make sure they know about what you are trying to do...you never know where an opportunity might come from). Now days I also ask clients to recommend us to other people, we specialise in music videos and musicians tend to talk to other musicians. Edit: just to clarify I think a social media presence that accurate communicates your art in a pleasing way is super useful in word of mouth because that’s where potential clients are likely to be sent...even if they weren’t sent by the algorithm
@gnowra
@gnowra 3 года назад
@@Anastasia_Sever that’s actually kind of why I made my first comment. I’ve always struggled with getting followers and likes but still had some good opportunities. In terms of the friends thing it’s not really that my friends are particularly supportive it’s just that you really don’t know who could give you an opportunity. As an example someone I barely knew from University showed one of their friends a project my studio worked on and this led to a client for us. Not all creative businesses and artists work in the same way but that’s the whole point, maybe you get success by going viral, maybe you cold email the right person, maybe an acquaintance recommends your art to someone who wants to buy it...the point is that social media is one element of getting opportunities, something else might work better for you.

Nice video 1. Have your niche. (Remember: Jack of all trades and master of none) 2. Have strong visual identity ( people should recognize your art) 3. Don't shoot too many blanks ( if you can say in one post that is it) 4. Engagement ( want to reach new people) 5. Storytelling 6. Catch your momentum ( check which of your work is most trending) 7. Don't show too much of your personal life 3.

I was very upset today because I posted some new art on my ig, thinking that maybe my engagement would get better, but I totally fell flat on my face. Your video helped me see what I'm doing wrong, and I think the problem is that I don't have a strong visual identity and a target public. At the moment, I'm very lost as an artist and don't really know what path I should take. But anyway, thank you so much for the video. Even though I'm kinda lost, I know what I should do now.

Amazing point of view and beautifully expressed. I’m surprised this channel isn’t bigger. I’m just starting to learn at an atelier and all I’ve don’t before is just draw on my own. I’ve questioned wether I should be more open because I was a street guy growing up and have a rough past and I didn’t see myself as fitting in but I’m starting to think that my perspective is unique and perhaps it will be more appropriated than I think.

We also judge women by their weight and judge men by their wealth. This problem you mentioned is not an isolated issue. I don’t think I can change the world in my life time. Doesnt matter what galleries or others think about what you have been doing for the last years and why you are start painting now - No „late-starting“ artist has to come up with some story - Just say the truth or say whatever - If someone find it strange thats they're problem - Important thing is you started and should just focusing on painting and share it - Dont have to have use the old school galleries - The world is a one big gallery with all the social media and millions will love what you paint without asking questions "why are you starting now?"
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 3 года назад
Sure! Just start at any time and create works that people would want to buy. That’s the real deal. But some people like to “small talk”. Like when I entered a kayak club for the first time, other club members asked: what brought you here? I applied for business school after 30 years old, I was also asked: “why are you doing this?” They are not trying to embarrass me, they are just trying to break the ice. When you start painting later in life, people are gonna ask - not in a bad way. It’s good to have some kind of answers at hand, so you can make great impressions. It’s not to justify, but to socialize.

Very useful video, thank you. But my advice is add some illustrations like screenshots to be more understandable. I'm from Russia and I am very interested in your content. But I have some problems with listening because I don't know english enough. And some illustrations can help me with this. I hope I didn't sound boring :) I just don't know language constructs that be more polite. You're awesome and as i said your videos are useful and interesting. Thank you again!

Hello again! Great points! While watching the video I just jotted down some thoughts: I just wanted to say that the fastest way to grow your art on social media at the moment is tiktok. You can go from 0 to 300,000 overnight. It is one of the best social media platforms for art! Other things you can do is utilize places like reddit to advertise your art, and be smart about what you post! EVERYONE loves a good realism piece and if you create a really good one and share your other social media platforms through reddit then people can see the art that you truly like to make! You can also take advantage of holidays, national events, etc. To get on trending very easily.

Hi 👋 Yes Tiktok is good, and it’s from my city Beijing. However, I wouldn’t personally invest too much time on Tiktok, because the policy issues. After all it’s a Chinese company. Like Huawei, Chinese companies can be banned in some regions of the world. It’s not fair but it’s like this.

Jack of all trade, master of none.. this happened to me, and I tried to post all in my talent in one social media, but I was stacked.. a lot let my page.. before I created another handle for my other talents.. But I couldn’t handle the both, I had to disable the handle and focus on my art handle, and have been growing .. and my reach has been getting to a lot engagements.. this vid is helpful

Hi Liams, thanks for your message. Sometimes you can use an autopilot strategy. We run some secondary Ins accounts that are growing on its own. It's not as fast but we don't spend so much time.

Very Private Gallery how do I get to it
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 4 года назад
@@liamsjr3726 You simply start an Instagram account that is a niche, not just about your art. For example, you start an account called 'Street Art Paris' (just an example!!!) then show some reposts from street artists in Paris. Maybe take some photos of street art you see when you visit Paris. Then this account will grow on its own with very little maintenance. You do need to curate some good content, and post some original stuff.
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 4 года назад
@@liamsjr3726 Many artists don't like this idea, because it's not directly about their art. But growing the niche you are in, isn't a bad idea either.

I like how you addressed points besides posting consistently or connecting with a lot of other artists. For a while now I've observed how most of my favourite popular artists have stayed on the app for years, but I didn't hear about something like that other than here when you pointed out being born in the wrong time. For me, it was accepting my art enough to show it to the world too late. I won't say my progress is bad but not really favourable either, my art has progressed enough from practicing that now I get comments telling me that they would love to see more of style. I'm at about 30 posts with 450 followers and i show a lot of OCs and sometimes their stories and little comics. My biggest fear is spending months on instagram with little to no progress. (Sometimes comments saying you're underrated can be embrassing or even painful to read lol 😅)

Hi thanks for sharing your thoughts. If each post can bring you more than 4 new followers, that is already better than my growth rate. There is no mathematical equation to calculate how many followers you will get from posting. Just think each follower you get without paying, is something you’ve got for free :)

What do you think of Fine Art America?
@Satierf_art

I study animation and work at an animation studio here in Vancouver. When I am not doing assignments (that many times are not even that exciting to look at), I am working on NDA stuff that I won’t be able post in at least one year. That sums up to around 10-12hrs of work a day and at the end I am just too tired to do any more drawings, especially now that I went back to the gym. What should I do? Although I can totally spare some time every now and then to draw some stuff for myself (which I do) It’s often just sketches and I need some time to recharge my batteries so I won’t burnout. Should I just wait until college is over to start thinking about what to do to grow?
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 3 года назад
Hi Matheus, Thanks for your message. I experienced similar struggle when I was working for an institution with NDA and I had to sign off my copyright as well. For a few years, I had no work to show. But the job taught me a lot when I was in my 20s. I think you can start a RU-vid channel and post videos about “life as a professional animator”. I am sure younger artists who are still in school would like that. You don’t need to show your works, just show your daily life and talk about the projects you are working on (without showing graphical content of your project). Like “working on a new Pixar thing”.

Thanks for the tips! I have two art accounts for two different art styles, but sometimes they crossover and I want to post the same post to both accounts. Is that bad, and will instagram somehow sense that I'm reposting the same artwork to two different accounts? And also, if I have a final artwork but I also want to show the process video behind it, is it better to just include it all in one post or make a separate post? A lot of times my first post has no traction so I want to make another post to try to get more views on that one. Hope I'm making sense!
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 3 года назад
Hey Stephanie, I think it's better to show behind the main image if you don't add any other things (voice, editing etc). When you add enough value, you can show it separately. Adding more value, I mean to add voice over, music and b-rolls. When it becomes a separate 'product', like a tutorial or 'story time' vlog, you can publish as a separate post. It will attract different kind of viewers.
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 3 года назад
Personally I don't think posting the same content twice is good. You can add variations like the way to present or edit your image. IF you really need to post the same, you can do a repost. This is just my personal preference because I think you will attract more quality followers if you can provide original and unique content.

So basically artists have difficult growing partly because people are short-minded and an artist must adapt to these people? Tbh it should be the other way around, people should try to reach for all the variety of art, being good at a lot of stuff is sometimes better than being excellent at only one thing, it depens on the circumstances. I'll never understand people who only want that only one thing, the more creativity and talens one have, the better
@VeryPrivateGallery
@VeryPrivateGallery 3 года назад
Trying to change how people behave is almost impossible. My personal goal is to change how artists think about money, and I could not. I can only change the ones who are more receptive to changes. How to find the ones who can and want to change? You need to reach people, lots of people. You need to grow on social media to reach and elevate them.
