When unconstrained by an engine, mobility can get a lot more flexible, opening up the opportunity to make a huge array of various things that get people from A-B. That's certainly what Vancouver based ENVO believes and they are exploring a whole host of different electric mobility options, from bikes, trikes, snow bikes, ATVS, water based things, you name it! But surely it doesn't make sense to make such niche electric mobility products?! We went to visit the team in Canada to find out more and to see just how much you can do with a simple battery and small electric motor.

What 'niche' electric vehicle are you asking for??!
@felderup
@felderup 10 месяцев назад
i want a sans permis analogue in nova scotia for an enclosed quad, like the old citicar. expanding our limited speed motorcycle license to encompass small cars might work, max speed 72kph up to 100cc, would be just about perfect for mobility everywhere. human powered with electric or fuel assist trikes aren't legal on our roads and the max speed is 30, quad is fine though, without some way of software relocking to drop it to legal speeds, it's not possible to buy the product you've displayed and legally use them on the road here. last time i looked the ONLY provinces in canada that allowed power assist bikes without a license were nova scotia and quebec, meaning everywhere else they need a moped licence, insurance, inspection, tags and plates, all the same stuff they need for a proper motorcycle, how are they getting away with it in bc? have there been changes?

This company absolutely doesn't cater for me. That's why I have a multi ton EV! ...which is even heavier than the diesel vehicle it replaced. I need to travel up to 200 miles a day with tools and materials. When you get your dream of everyone in/on a micro EV don't expect any help from trades when your roof starts leaking, your plumbing and electric fail. Trades need to have allowances or the customer will have to pay the extra premium.

@beepthesheep867
@beepthesheep867 10 месяцев назад
@DJB01 I'm understandably disgruntled. There's an agenda to ultimately ban all cars. I haven't seen anything anywhere that says EVs will be exempt from this and we know there aren't enough raw materials extracted in 10 years to replace just the vehicle in just the UK with BEVs. I did my research and made the shift to an EV and so did my gf. Don't get me wrong, I love my EV, but I'm also aware of all the negative aspects to driving one too. These micro EVs are not suitable for the majority of the UK. That accounts for why 44 million vehicles are on the UK roads. I showed my gf that these micro EVs would be the way she'll be expected to commute to work. She raised her eyebrows, which said it all. She could manage with a micro EV but only 3 days per week. She'd still need her current small EV which was purchased to suit her exact requirements. I currently have a huge issue with kids on electric scooters terrorising the local supermarket car park, which they use for a meet up. There needs to be legislation in place. That legislation needs to be tough and on a par to riding a moped. Registration, insurance, MOT, indicators, helmets, licence, points, parking, the works.The police shouldn't be turning a blind eye. What is illegal is illegal and there's no excuse. I've seen the accident injury and death report in relation to electric scooters and proportionately, fair worse than cars! You can not combat that fact with flippant comments about the UK being behind without understanding the justification for that!
@aliruane

We are so backward in the UK on micromobility. Smaller, lighter, lower powered and more flexible solutions are illegal here. It’s mental.

I think the VeeMo is an interesting development and consistent with other products out there doing similar things. I would not drive it on a road with traffic however, and I guess it maybe too big for some bike trails. It would have practical uses in certain specific situations though. So, there is that. If everyone was using them on the road then thats different proposition, as I would not feel so vulnerable if I were the only one. Just my personal opinion. It’s very niche IMO, and is a great idea waiting for the right alignment to occur. 👍

With Global warming, Ohio's winters, are sometimes less harsh,....but you can't depend on it. Cleveland, Ohio where I was born, the winters are the harshest, however I moved to central Ohio, which is more south, and we have milder winters. But you can't rule out an occasional rogue winter, with snow, ice, sleet, and you need to be warm and safe.

We really need changes in legislation to make the micro EV more desirable and useful. A good payload and speed to be competitive with an urban van that is only 1/4 or 1/2 full, and financial 'carrots' to encourage take up. But also safer storage of them especially when they could be picked up and put in a van if left parked on the road overnight.

Funny thing with modern EV's seem to be, that almost every car manufactur is only building an endless stream of 4-door saloons and 4-door SUV's. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, electric bicycles, scooters and tricycles. Where are all the 2-door model cars that we used to see on the streets? The small hot hatches, the coupe's and the cabrio's that can do a, for an allround car, usable range of at least 300km? In the Netherlands there are 8.3 million households in total, of which 3.3 million 1 person households and around 3 million 2 person households. That is more than half the househlds has no need for a 4-door car. Still, it is almost impossible to find a 2-door car that can be used as a daily driver to replace a normal ICE car. For those families, 4 door cars are a total waste of materials and energy.

The problem with carbon fibre is that it is currently made from oil based polymers. I am concernd that carbon fibres have the same impact as GRP fibres on the marine environment. I think there is a role for carbon fibre as carbon '100'' which conducts electricity better than copper (rated at '80') is in future electric motor windings. The carbon needs to be grown as a crystal from carbon dioxide but this technology doesn't yet exist. Using Aluminium utilises a one seventh of the Earths's resourses so makes more sense. London taxis are already made like this.

The reason why you don't see things "in-between" a cargo bike/trike, and full-blown cars... is that they're basically illegal to operate. A 4-wheeled vehicle that isn't a literal mobility scooter is not allowed on Canadian roads or bike paths. A vehicle that goes above 25 (or 32) km/h is forbidden on public roads. If you want to create any 4-wheeled vehicle that isn't a mobility scooter (what we call LSVs, Low Speed Vehicles) you need to get it approved, inspected, plated and insured *as a car* which implies requirements like ABS brakes, assisted steering, traction control, seatbelts, and everything else a car legally requires. There is no inbetween because Transport Canada's rules and regulations simply do not allow us to own and operate them. If they *did* allow for them, I'd just buy a Chang Li off aliexpress for $900 (+ shipping, taxes, import fees around $3000 in total) and ride that around like a glorified enclosed golf cart. I love seeing new vehicles, weird and quirky things that look great and would be lovely to use... but you just *cannot* and that's the issue that needs to be addressed before we can move on to better micromobility and personal mobility devices.

Nice ideas, in the UK we have Swytchbike kits that convert almost any bike but we are limited to 250w and 15.5 mph which is too low. If they increased it to say 35 mph and increased the wattage, small cargo ebikes / trikes would do well in towns and cities and keep traffic flowing I reckon. I wouldn't even mind a small fee (road tax) and annual safety inspection if the price was right. I only say that because the revenue they would lose vs cars would have to be made up in other ways and the current state of potholes in UK is shocking.

People commuting, just themselves, two tonnes, two times a day, just a few miles is complete madness.

I'd like it fully enclosed with a decent internal combustion engine

A truly awful creation, the Danish U36 that became the MiniEl was a far better machine, 30miles, at 30miles per hour, no peddling and full weather enclosure, it was designed as a moped or scooter replacement and could carry an adult and two young children, unfortunately the c5 killed anything electric in Britain for a generation. I worked with the industrial designer Ray Innes on it as my first project with him in 1982, Stein Jensen approached Ray Innes to do the body and other design work while he concentrated on the mechanical and electrical side, the completed U36 was first exhibited in a Danish bank in Randers, where the first factory for them was built, I believe they are still made in Germany.

Very interesting, but I wonder about the safety of some of these vehicles. ATVs are already dangerous enough. I suppose with the Envo ATV the risk of being crushed when it rolls onto you is minimal.

I was so disappointed when Veemo redesigned their velomobile from being fully enclosed to being open. Fully enclosed small electric vehicles are so attractive to me living in the pacific northwest. That being said, this company is doing some very interesting things.

@1wuzgray325 I too fell in love with the fully enclosed Veemo. To me, it would be the closest thing to driving an actual car without the expensive maintenance or needing to insure it and no required driver's license. But that model was being used in a pilot vehicle sharing program in selected areas. I actually emailed the company and asked if they will ever offer it to individuals who wish to purchase one for themselves as private owners. The answer I got back was that they were considering it. But alas, we got this semi open model instead. Bummer.

If they weren’t so expensive, I’d buy one. I enjoy my eBike, but I’d LOVE to have a trike or a 4 wheel covered eBike, but the makers want to charge too much money for them

Basically its a pimped up mobility scooter. It might suit someone doing short journeys to the shops but for city use where would you park it without blocking the pavements or the local vandals stealing it of wrecking it.

We are pretty nearly doomed to be stuck inside some kind of heavy tank when travelling or else be struck by one if we dare to travel on the road by any other means. I was watching a surgeon on 24 hrs in A&E who was tying to cope with the flood of cyclists coming in who had been mangled by London traffic . She said she would advise no one to cycle in London.

Then perhaps London should improve the cycling paths. Cycling and micro-mobility are increasing in all developed countries (aside from the US), that's not going to stop.

It’s actually surprising the routes you can find in London to avoid cycling with the traffic. Go through parks, along the canal, a dedicated cycle lane, shared pedestrian areas…
