Small engine repair requires a specific set of tools and equipment to effectively diagnose and fix various issues. As a small engine repair professional, having the right tools at your disposal is essential for delivering quality service to customers. Here are some essential tools and equipment used in small engine repair:
1. Wrenches and Socket Set: A set of standard and metric wrenches and a socket set are fundamental tools for any small engine repair technician. They are used to tighten and loosen nuts, bolts, and other fasteners on engines and equipment.
2. Screwdrivers: A variety of screwdrivers, including flat-head and Phillips-head, are necessary for removing screws and accessing various engine components.
3. Pliers: Pliers come in handy for gripping and manipulating small engine parts, such as hoses, cables, and electrical connectors.
4. Spark Plug Socket and Gap Gauge: These tools are essential for removing and installing spark plugs and ensuring the correct gap for optimal engine performance.
5. Compression Tester: A compression tester allows you to measure the engine's compression, helping diagnose issues with valves, piston rings, and gaskets.
6. Carburetor Cleaning Tools: Small engine carburetors can get clogged with dirt and debris, so having carburetor cleaning tools, such as small brushes and carburetor cleaner, is essential for proper maintenance.
7. Ignition Tester: An ignition tester helps diagnose ignition system issues by checking for spark in the spark plug.
8. Multimeter: A digital multimeter is used to measure voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits, aiding in diagnosing electrical problems.
9. Oil Filter Wrench: This tool is designed to remove and install oil filters, making oil changes quick and easy.
10. Shop Towels and Cleaning Supplies: Keeping the work area clean and organized is crucial, so having shop towels, cleaning solvents, and degreasers is necessary for efficient repairs.
Having a well-equipped toolbox with these essential tools will enable you to tackle a wide range of small engine repair tasks effectively. Regularly maintaining and organizing your tools will enhance your efficiency and help you deliver top-notch service to your customers. You can do this effectively by starting off with low-cost tools from Harbor Freight. The key is to keep the costs down.

Put old screwdriver handles on your plug wrenches. Cylinder leakdown tester is a must, compression release on some engines can fool a compression tester. While test cranking engine for compression, test spark with tester, not a spark plug. Saves a step. A battery 1/4" hex impact wrench (Bosch!) is great, get the 6" phillips, torx and allen bits, 1/4" and 3/8 socket adapters. Vacuum/pressure bleeder kit for testing lines, carbs and other stuff. I used to use a small nalgene wash bottle & hose with mix in it to bypass 2 cycle tank and fuel lines for a quick running test.

Two video idea's that no one else on RU-vid has done well. 1- How to put a chain on a chainsaw correctly. 2- Your thoughts on Briggs engines, old-new. 80's, 90's 2000-present. Good video

Compression tester should be first then Spark tester and last carburetor adjustment screwdriver set. You want the set of screwdrivers that has like 14 or 15 adjustment tools. Some of the small Honda tillers and 4 stroke stuff have the small D shaped screw in the throttle shaft. Can't make them run right without that tool. Can always use carb cleaner to check crank seals.

thanks for the response Jason. I know that most of the high low jet wrenches are just enough different that they will not work unless you have the correct one.

@@northernnewyorkparts I have actually had a micro D strip and had to remove the slide and unthread the needle with needle nose pliers and cut it off with a Dremel and carefully cut a slot in the end and thread it back in so it could be adjusted with a very small flat screwdriver.

I would not recommend those type spark testers. It may take less than 12v to light those bulbs, but you need thousands of volts to jump the sparkplug gap. You need a spark tester which has a considerable gap. The tester gap should be greater than the spark plug itself. You could get burned using those bulb type spark testers if you have a bad coil or high voltage leak. The light bulb type testers are not a full proof test... Or is that fool proof 😳 You would be better off using a plastic handle screwdriver to create a gap to ground for testing, or a known good spark plug. Also you don't just need a strong spark since there is a spark every time you break the ignition circuit, you need a strong steady spark while cranking. This also depends on the state of the battery! I proved to the manager at our harbor freight how those spark testers can fail to find the problem, and that they should be recalled because or removed from the shelf because they don't actually work.

good info to know Jack, so far I have not heard of anyone getting hurt. I know they are cheaply made and not a 100% accurate with using them everyday. thanks

I use a product called TriFlow for starting 2 cycle small engines. I never use starting fluid. So starting 2024 California is banning the sale of small engines. People will still be able to use what they have they just won't be able to buy new equipment in that state. What is your take on the issue and do you think it will increase the work load of small engine repair. Thanks

I would assume Jim that many will switch completely over to battery operated units. I actually love your take on it because I hadn't thought about the public being forced to get their machines fixed verses going out and buying an expensive battery unit. thanks
