True. But Rod’s in good company there. The same is true of almost any singer you could name. Given that Marriott had walked and they needed to replace him with SOMEONE, it’s difficult to imagine who would have been a better replacement. When it comes to that particular brand of soulful, bluesy, hard rock singing, Marriott is entirely without peer. It’s never been done better.
ha! the little bit of echo here shows how superior marriott was to other vocalists of his day! they were all using echo to mask their weak vocals; when he used echo, the echo masked his great vocals!
I have seen quite a few bands but born in the wrong bloody decade to hear this guy sing live. Just superb one of my all time favs from a talented and short lived band, just wish they had done one more album after ogdens to see which direction they would have turned.
I worship at the feet of Marriott and have done since I was a cock sure little peacock and as i am 50 in a few weeks I shall continue to worship at the altar of the mightiest ov mijits, but I might need a cushion for me knees!!!!
Tremendous, imaginative guitar work from Steve on this too; Ian McLagan said that in his opinion Steve was a better guitarist than Frampton, although their styles are completely different.
Ohhh thank you so frustrating that Steve wasn't rocketed to the top, he leaves me speechless...and now I know where Robert plant got his mimicry from, this is from the guts...
Steve had a powerhouse voice for such a small guy. I do wish he would have resumed acting as well. However he was most likely correct in assuming producers wouldn't appreciate his hyperactive unpredictable personality..ha.
Marriott had one of those voices never forgotten, I remember when i first listerned to them.....................what a band and what a sound. Fabulous stuff from a fantastic era. thanks for the upload.
I’m not going to go quite that far, but in the field of that particular style of 60s British band that remained heavily R&B/soul based even as they evolved into psychedelic hard rock, The Small Faces is peerless. The fact that their closest analogues, the Stones and The Who, are so much better known that this band that was doing exactly what they were doing but five times better, is a travesty.
Was this from a TV show in which the lead vocal was live and the backing track a recording? Because the backing track was *exactly* like the studio version. Powerful singing, just the same.
CHEERS yeh always made up with that & he knows it as well only 3 but the little man knows who he is named after...also named my daughter AUTUMN after autumn stone...but stopped short at OGDENS NUT GONE FLAKE ha keep the faith
cant believe its took me over a year 2 discover this fabulous upload....ace....strangely justy as my son Marriott has just asked to play soldiers at the same time as i hit the play button!!!!! i wonder if it was an out-take from the colour me pop sessions? that nevere made the cut i maybe wrong but worth ashout? keep the faith collibosher70 keep it real mate
Steve is singing live along with the record that's the "echo" you hear, his voice is live but you can also hear the recorded version in the background.
Not quite. The voice is only double tracked in the sections where it was double tracked on the record (eg, it comes in for the pre-chorus at “I don’t understand”), elsewhere it’s a single live voice with either a reverb effect applied to it or else it’s the natural reverb of the hall. Most likely the playback is of a special mix of the original multi-track with the lead vocal removed, except in the double-tracked sections, where one of two identical tracks is kept in, to replicate the double-tracked effect of those sections on the record.
Marriotts guitar skills were copied by the likes of paige

Leonard Dobson - they probably were....like Clapton copied Muddy Water, like Angus Young copied Paul Kossof, like Slash copied Page....etc etc. My point was Marriot may have been bigger had he had the right group....no disrespecting Humble Pie, but the hits and sound wasn't quite there, in spite Marriot's absolute quality. Jimmy did try to poach him but Don Arden politely told him to back off.
@ This was is not Humble Pie, this is Small Faces. Is there somteting particular wrong with Kenny Jones (drums), Ronnie Lane (bass) and Jimmy Winston (piano/keyboard)?
I have the backing track. It was on the Small Faced boxset I think. I always wanted tp hear a live vocal over it. They never did it too well live, the PAs in those days were not man enough, instrumentally ok but the vocals (even Steves) were mostly drowned out. I saw them in Brentwood in 68.
