Small, Far Away - The World of Father Ted, pt 1.

On the 15th anniversary of its launch, this documentary follows Father Ted creators Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews as they return to Craggy Island on a road trip across Ireland, taking them back to some of the key filming locations from the series.
Father Ted captured a specific Irish humour rarely seen on screen and its impact doesn't seem to have faded. The show is revealed as a product of a pair of ambitious writers, a brilliant cast and the gently confident producer Geoffrey Perkins, whose suggestion of turning a one-off mock documentary into a sitcom helped make it the much-loved show it is today.
Ardal O'Hanlon, Frank Kelly, Graham Norton and many others pitch in with their reminiscences of the show, the passion it inspired and their memories of the late, great Dermot Morgan.

When they tried to get Pauline McLynn to be on the documentary I wonder if they said "Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on."

Would that have been written on queue cards, or conveyed verbally? 😆

Pauline addressed this subsequently I think. She said was merely busy when they were filming this, no more to it than that.
@ismayb754
@ismayb754 11 месяцев назад
@@andyb3666 Easy to say that later though, especially when it's really nobody else's business. She might well have declined at the time because she wanted to distance herself, and then later on just said no I was just busy (because why should she explain herself). None of us will ever really know (and why should we?). Usually when an actor would LIKE to do something but can't due to other commitments, they actually make that very clear (so as to keep relationships good with everyone involved, which is very important in the biz). And if she had done that, I'm sure that would have been reflected in the on-screen caption rather than a pretty blunt "She declined." So I very much reserve my judgement on that one.

My facebook photo (and I'll NEVER change it!) is me standing at the gate of that very house! I went to Ireland for work and made a pilgrimage - something I'd wanted my whole life! My cabbie was utterly stunned he met an American who knew anything about Father Ted, much less was determined to see the house. He said when he told his wife, she replied that it was a shame Dermot Morgan hadn't lived to see that day. What a shame indeed. :( Rest in peace. Even in America we miss you, Father Ted. :(

That part with Jim Norton made me tear up. He says "I can't watch it. It's too painful." I thought he meant the getting kicked part. But it's because he misses his friend. :,(

+Torgo Saves Me too, mate, the very same. I thought originally that he just meant he didn't like watching himself for egoic reasons. I too teared-up when I realised what Jim Norton really meant. It's especially powerful since up till that point he struck me as serious and stoic. Obviously he's a lovely guy.

+mark d short It just shows what an amazing actor he is as well. He couldn't be less like his character, the tyrannical Bishop Brennan. A bit like how Frank Kelly is a million miles away from Father Jack. It's a testament to Dermot and Ardal that they were able to hold their own with such masters of the craft. RIP Dermot. :(

Same. Of course, since I made that previous comment, the great Frank Kelly has also left us. It makes watching the show more poignant knowing some of the great actors in it are no longer around. This show will be a classic for all time though, long after we've all gone, people will still be enjoying Father Ted. And that is a great legacy to leave behind.
@markds2

My fave bit is 05:35 till 05:45: the transition of the mild-mannered, erudite Frank Kelly into Father Jack. It's hilarious and the difference between the two characters is very striking. The most moving part is what Jim Norton had to say.

After watching Derry Girls with my Irish friend I was so hooked on Irish comedy, and found Father Ted in 2018. Unbelievable, such a brilliant programme and all of it on RU-vid. I still watch it from time to time because there's not anything else like it. Since the sad discovery that Dermot Morgan passed so young and Frank Kelly had gone too, watching Father Ted is a strange mixture of pure off-the-charts hilarity and a little sadness.

I don't think they would have made any more shows anyway, Morgan was quoted as saying he was going to give the character of Ted up, as he didn't want to become typecast. Very sad he died the very day after filming ended.

Linehan and Mathews had already decided, prior to writing it, that the third series would be the last. They knew it had run its course and wanted to end it whilst it was still popular. Morgan's death made certain that the series could never return, but even if he was still alive today I think it's unlikely they would ever have made more anyway.
