Here's my take on the theology behind this movie, how purgatory works , the mistakes Andreas made and how he could have prevented his transformation into a snowman. The way purgatory depicted here looks to test the character of a man to determine if he's fit for heaven or condemned to hell is primarily via the removal of all earthly delights. Food has no taste, there's no engaging conversation to be had, even sex is motion without passion so almost all of what many people think gives life meaning is absent. Normal people are sent here to prove their character and are 'assisted' in this task by human-like entities that are more akin to video game NPC's (non player characters) robotic facsimiles programmed to replicate life. evidence for this is their complete lack of real emotion compared to normal humans, finding emotions and the concepts of taste or the laughter of children to be foreign, even somewhat disturbing, a complete lack of empathy or recognition towards human injury and an obsession with furnishing and construction projects in a very robotic manner. Andreas adapts quickly to his new surroundings, but lifeless humdrum of everyday life soon wears on him. His first big break and possibility for redemption comes when he starts his relationship with Anne. Andreas finds himself much happier with Anne, despite her robotism, however the relationship is only half the story. The other big half is he's now involved in caring for and helping someone else, even though this should be part of any healthy relationship, it's the spark of selfless altruism that's key here. The film focuses on first the vibrancy and life of the pot plant followed by the construction project the two of them complete. The hint is very subtle so Andreas can be excused for missing it, but aren't there a lot of people thinking about moving furniture and remodeling their houses? indeed there are entire dinner parties of people almost begging for help with these things. Unfortunately andreas not only misses the hint, he screws up in an atrocious way by cheating on Anne when the initial excitement of the relationship dies out due to her being an NPC. NPC or not, cheating is Bad , M'kay? It's an extremely selfish and self centered act which earns Andreas his first strike. Lets move on to the second opportunity, which is meeting Hugo. All andreas needed to do here is listen to Hugo's misgivings about tampering with the wall and accept them. Hugo stands to lose far more than Andreas if the cleaners get wind of this situation, so Andreas should not have imposed on Hugo. listening and accepting shows respect and care for another person, even though they have something you desperately desire. Andreas could have befriended and looked out for Hugo and the two of them would have had a chance to support each other ,moving in the right direction whilst using the wall music as incentive. Instead Andreas puts his own entitled desires ahead of Hugo's even to the extent of taking over his apartment to dig out the wall. Strike two. The third opportunity is a big one. Now the duo have dig so deep that they can't keep the secret hidden, something Hugo was afraid of. Elderly residents notice the music and nice smells and want to join in appreciating them. These older folk are humans like Andreas. The NPC's don't show evidence of aging at all, nor are they attracted to jaunty music or definitive smells as a human would be. It's quite possibly some humans have been languishing here for decades at best, millennia at worst and suddenly they have a tiny glimmer of joy in the miserable doldrums of their lives. Let me detail how reprehensible Andreas is right here in the context of purgatory. Andreas has shown he has little to no respect for individuals feelings or needs other than his own. The way he deserts his job and shirks responsibilities paint a grim picture of his treatment of broader society as well, so here are some of the most vulnerable members of a community who are no threat to Andreas , who don't what to interfere with him, they have no desire to betray him, all the elders want is to sit quietly and listen. To andreas, the mere thought of them sharing in HIS music is unacceptable. Even them existing in the nearby vicinity upsets him. Even if we chalk this up to the most paranoid and irrational fear , just a few seconds of thought would tell anyone it's safer to have the elders sitting quietly inside than standing outside by the basement window impersonating wooden dippy drinking birds. Strike three, he's out. I honestly believe Andreas dun goofed too much by this point. Reason being .... welll... said group of fossilized fogies loitering by the window. Even the NPC's will soon see this is odd and the Cleaners will be on their way. It's most likely the Cleaners knew about the wall already and this is the sign to move in and clean house they were waiting for. This is purgatory after all and not some soundproofed city basement and by purgatories rules Andreas has proven himself time and again unworthy of heaven and his selfish douchebaggery has earned him a one way bus ride to PP-shrinkage land. There's still hope though. Andreas can literally still escape through the tunnel into heaven if he works alongside Hugo to finish it. Friendship, comradery , hard work and diligence are all admirable qualities whilst working towards a goal for the common good. There's no true escape though as Andreas fumbles around through the hole and like an addict fixing for his next high, misses the entire picture when he grabs on to a single , lousy bit of cake. Andreas doesn't even try to share it with Hugo, who worked just as hard along side him to obtain it. Andreas fails the most basic of all human tests, even caveman co-operation and simple sharing is too far a concept right now for this selfish, self-absorbed butthole. Had Andreas just thought to share a crumb of that cake, he'd most likely still be in purgatory rather than the frozen wastes. This would have been the city leaders decision in the context of purgatory and redemption. Andreas had multiple opportunities to show even the meagerest consideration towards the needs and wants of his fellow man over his own selfish desires and instead he made other peoples lives worse in order to benefit his own so a permanent seat in the deep freeze with an icicle up the bum for eternity was the call they made. There you have my take and explanation on this movie. TL/DR Andreas was a selfish twat too many times for too long and got put on ice.

He probably was in purgatory because there is no real happiness or excitement or pain...just dullness. The fact he almost broke into Heaven may have been a test to see if he would continue to strive for it or be content with the smallest distraction instead...since he failed, he was sent to hell
@@bigfoot1861 cheating is cheating also the girl never did anything wrong to him. he could have just told her that he isnt inlove with her anymore and break up.
Wow, majority of the people in this comment thread did not even read the original comment and just started thinking that the Protagonist went to hell because of cheating 🤦. Instead of being content with what he had, he let greed overcome him and consume his entire being (Like being addicted to substances, People who are addicted spend their entire life trying to get more of that addicting substance instead of doing something fruitful)
Title is a bit misleading. Pretty sure this dude starts out in Purgatory, and betrays the establishment and tries to escape to heaven before his time is up in Purgatory. So they banish him to hell for his actions. And judging by the snow and wind. He’s in the 9th circle now, and more specifically the innermost circle, Judeca iirc. It’s the worst spot in hell according to Dante and if memory serves those strong winds are actually cause by Satans wings as he unsuccessfully tries to escape.

@@kittycat8222 No it doesn't? There are mentions of a concept both in Old and New Testament. Mentions of how those who die in God's grace but with impure souls go to Heaven but get cleansed first. Purging the sins from the souls is where the name purgatory comes from.
What andrew has experienced is actually the boring 9-5 job, the never-ending dating, clothes changing bf gf, the government control, the heartless society,....
The thing with these Scandinavian movies is that they are often socially critical. As an outsider and someone with a more objective view on Norwegian society, I can confirm that a lot of what is shown in the movie is socially accurate. High bureaucracy, loveless relationships, false positivism, pragmatism, materialism, superficial friendships and topics of conversation, alcohol and drug addiction, strong lack of ambition, strong routines and punishment of those who diverge from the status quo. All this can be easily observed in about one week of living in Norway, let alone years. Also in regards to food, Norwegian cuisine and food are notoriously tasteless.
Did not expect that in Norway as I was captured by its magnificent landscape and history. I guess time changes everything including people. Materialism has taken humans way too deep with nothing of real substance.
Good post. I always understood that Norway is a safe place with a high quality of life, and the people are happier than the rest of the world. Cheers from Australia.
Andreas had a nice house, a cute girlfriend, a job that gave him unlimited freedom, and the miraculous ability to heal from any wounds. He threw it all away for some music from a hole in a wall.
@@DarkArcz Didn't you see ? All of that was empty and devoid of any real emotions. Girlfriend not caring about you, boring job with on repeat co-workers and nothing having taste or giving any feeling. Trapped in a city with goons not letting you out of bounds. I'd follow the music and children's laughs over this routine torture too. This is the death of the human mind.
He was in purgatory. He saw heaven and broke the rules of purgatory by trying to break into heaven. For that he was sent to deepest part of Hell which is in fact a frozen wasteland (at least according to some writers)
@@salvyballacc Where'd you get that from? Purgatory is literally the place in-between hell and heaven, it's basically a waiting room for people that haven't been judged yet or people that are undeserving of heaven or hell
Not really, at all, at least from what I can tell. For a start it's clearly not the normal or "real" world, and it's not a lack of "ups and downs" that make it dull, it's a lack of ANYTHING but a game-like, boring, predictable routine that makes it so boring. More than likely it seems to be HELL itself, or Purgatory, as some have suggested, as Andreas is able to break free of it, but only so from cutting out of the routine. It's more of saying that - assuming it's a statement about life - saying that life is Hell if you're stuck in an uninteresting, routinely life with no real honesty and feeling to it, and if you look in the right places, you can find the goodness, getting away from the boring, dull rat race, but only hang onto it by stopping the dullness from finding it, and taking it away from you too. Assuming of course that you even watched the film or DIDN'T make the comment for likes.
i dont think the movie says this at all. The story for the man has hardly any ups, and the few ups he did have was based on hard working effort (the rlayion with new relationship or the cracking wall to find amazing cake). I dont think it said the down part is a necessarynpart ofnlife at all.
This movie is just an accurate depiction of depression. You're caught in endless, meaningless routines, you're unable to enjoy your hobbies, sex or even a sip of coffee and your mind constantly tells you it'll go on like this forever and there's no way out. At the end, either you get help and make it to the other side or you just break and end up in nothingness.
If that's what you believe clearly you're a narcissist, this man had everything and never enjoyed any of it. He was scum bag from start to finish never appreciating anything the only time he focused or wanted was when he thought he could have better
Its why I love Groundhogs Day so much. You can either choose to be happy or miserable. Life has a lot to offer if we just appreciate all the beauty within it.
Seems almost an allegory for the Garden of Eden. Andreas has an easy life and everything he needs or wants. But he's dissatisfied and tries to obtain what he's not allowed to have (yet?). The cake is like his bite of the forbidden fruit. Notice, he's the only one cast out. Hugo never tasted the cake so he was able to remain.
When you read Dante’s inferno you can see that there are nine circles of hell and purgatory is one of them, it’s not hell or heaven but somewhere in between. But if you go deeper into the very beginning of hell it’s the normal depiction (fire and all that) but if you go all the way down into the final circle is depicted as very icy and cold just like in the movie
The Divine Comedy is actually split into three parts, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. The 9 Circles of Hell are just Hell, while Purgatory is 7 terraces on a mountain, which lead to the 9 Spheres of Heaven.
It’s strange to hear this movie explained by someone else. The whole thing felt far more socio-political than existential. I experienced it as a specific allegory for Norwegian society and it’s overemphasis on conformity. Interesting to see such a different understanding of the movie.
When I first saw it I thought it more of as a allegory to depression because a lot of people tend to assimilate depression with sadness but in reality is more like pure apathy and you end doing a lot of things just to see if you can feel anything at all, like he did when he cut his finger, had an affair and so on.
I too, saw a metaphore of modern life expectations and disconformity and the price to pay for it. Dont know a thing about norwat, but modern life social expectations are more or less the same in europe
What a great movie, because it could mean so many different things: - The dichotomy between what represents the good life in the US, with instagram ready furniture, and that for most this comes with huge trade-offs, long hours of hard and/or work, no time for hobbies or family - Hell/Heaven/limbo - Soviet style grey cities that mimic Western life and try to say everyone is happy (but not) and the end is a Siberian gulag - How the world could seem with depression - Could just be tapping into young adult fear at beginning work career, and still having teen/childhood life as a recent nostalgic memory, and adjusting to the frequent demands and sacrifice of being independent - Many more
I really loved this recap. I would have never heard of this film without you same as a lot of the others. The effort it takes to find a film with things I know I will enjoy is hard and takes a while and so I can watch these recaps and go watch one. Other times I just watch the recap and that's it and it feels like I've somewhat actually watched the film. Thanks so much. 😎😉🙏🙏🙏
Purgatory. You get what you put in. I don't think Andreas is much less a zombie than those he perceives around him, and that is why everything was so bland, because he was a bland guy.
What if we all lives in a purgatory after all? what if the world we're currently in, is just made to test our worth? to see if we can overcome our inability when we're "alive"?
The problem is, people miss the subtle positive message of the film, and get too caught up on Andreas's fate and what he did to earn that fate, rather than what Andreas could've done to avert it, and the reality of how purgatory functions. You are given ultimate freedom to do whatever you want; but you only get out of it what you put in. This is why one guy got super wasted, and Andreas was unable to. Andreas only randomly typed on his keyboard. Thus, everything was bland, but not entirely tasteless. But the guy who puked on himself probably worked hard, thus his alcohol wasn't watered down; however, over drinking is its own punishment. Heaven, you see, is getting access to the fruits of the best works from the best sort of people, in exchange for your best works from your best self. Andreas is a lazy, dumb, and selfish POS, therefor the cake, let alone all of heaven, was not for him. He didn't even bother fighting the cleaning crew, if he felt he was wronged. No sense of justice, just a zombie pursuing sensory gratification, too afraid to so much as ask where he is.
OH PATHETIC how dare you set my skills of good to good boi god heh who would even monitor that!? I think angels only can do that if they are on our shoulders yes? And of course the evil on the other side..
Guy dies and wakes up in hell. The devil greets him and offers to show him around. The guy is a bit nervous, but the devil assures him he’s safe and nothing bad will happen to him. Half way through the tour, the guy is starting to feel relaxed, as all the things he’s been shown so far is akin to a 5 star luxury resort, but all of a sudden they come to a walled off area where he hears loud screaming of people in severe pain. He’s asks the devil what it’s all about and is told “don’t worry, that’s not your concern.” They then finish off the tour beside the walled off area and again the guy gets freaked out and says to the devil “please, I’m freaking out here, what’s behind that wall.” The devil then says “very well I’ll show you.” They go through a hidden door and pass the wall and the guy is greeted to a horrible sight of people getting the worst tortures imaginable. The guy freaks out even more, thinking this is going to be his fate, but the devil says to him “don’t worry, this is only for Christian’s. It’s what they expect and personally I’ve never understood why they’d want it.”
Maybe some people know exactly how broken / messed up they are and don't think they deserve heaven, even after living the best life they could on earth and doing all the "right" things

@@dragon22214 No one told him he's in purgatory and no one told him the rules. He doesn't know if there is any salvation. He's just lost. Of course he's going to go after a nice smell and some nice music.
@@nickjunes no, the actual motive of him being sent to hell is pretty simple. He had been selfish throughout the movie and his actions had been only for his betterment. Even when he broke into heaven, all he cared was to get a piece of cake and eat it greedily without sharing a single crumb with his friend even though his friend had worked just as hard to help him break into heaven (Hence, Andreas was sent to Hell but the other guy was left as it is). He wasn't sent to hell for breaking into heaven, he was sent to hell for being self centred and greedy beyond help. I am a staunch Atheist but even I agree that Andreas was beyond saving at that point.
Zamhareer (Arabic: الزمهرير) is a place of ultra extreme cold at the bottom of hell in some Islamic sources. It is characterized as being unbearably cold with blizzards, ice, and snow, which makes peoples’ bones crack and their flesh to fall off.
I'm afraid not, he'll is a fire 🔥 😳 that will never go off, meaning separation from GOD forever. And those who believed spend time in the presence of GOD and HIS SON JESUS CHRIST in heaven forever.
I took it as a commentary on our society. He starts out upper-middle-class existence, just going through the motions with no real agency over his appointment to his circumstances, and proceeds to live his unfulfilling life, unchanging and materialistic and shallow. He wants for no things, nothing is expected of him but acceptance of the status quo. Note that there are no children. The beautiful reality is shown as rustic and domestic and simple, bright and full of life. Ultimately his non-conformity is discovered and here is where I think that he is now doomed to being cast out of society but he no longer cares and pursues the beautiful existence he knows he could have if only he could break from the confines of his situation. But his attempt is discovered and his punishment for rejecting the status quo is isolation and abandonment. He was bothersome and unlike the other man content to have a tiny hole with music he listened to late at night, he wanted more and his final crime was that he was tempting others.
This was one of the better takes on it. But theres one flaw in your reasoning- if its about being content with what you have then why is it he felt absolutely nothing with the coffee and the passionless sex? He has to search for something that gave him a good feeling. He wasnt allowed to be content because there was nothing to be content with. How do you explain that?
@@PolishBehemoth thank you, well what I would say is two things: first, they are telling him to be content with what they give him and he thinks at first this is what he is supposed to be content with despite his unhappiness. But he learns it is a façade and a lie. So the message of the film isn't about being content - it is about being discontent with the status quo, to pursue something more beautiful and meaningful.
@@XMachete or the message could be a juxtaposition of two very different beliefs and its making a morally ambigous comment on the whole thing. Just to say, the idea of purgatory normally is that you're definitely going to heaven, but you have to basically do time for your sins. It's not a test to see if you go to hell or heaven.
Well it's an interesting concept to say the least. Never seen a movie recapped like this either so I'm glad to have not had to invest more time than I'd needed. Fun stuff
Honestly there have been times recently that are a bit to similar to that movie for me, no not the cheating just the lack of everyone around me having REAL emotion. I guess I have to dig a cave with good music and good food at the end of it.
I was watching this recap while high and ohhh boy, did I loose my shit with the “ what if’s? “. I started to ask myself, what if heaven is just like this earth. But everything is just so vibrant, there’s more details and more harmony; meaning we can hear sounds that we’ve never heard before, sounds of plants, stones, other human beings etc. and our families are always our families. And I suspect reincarnation are for the people that can’t feel more when they are in the other side. So they came back through a portal to earth and exist with a new family… but whenever they die they go back to their OG family in the other side. And you start to improve on adapting to the other side. Crazy but it could be true. I’ve always heard about this download from people that have NDE’s and they visit the other side. What if our Brains on the other side have 1000x limits over the one we get here on this dimension( probably 10x).. so you learn things quicker. As if they are downloading.
take some LSD and you will hear music from the clouds while they create the most amazing patters and everyting is just that little bit brighter , music is something else. a form of communication. taste is changed, you can drink water out of the tap and it will be purple and taste like grape
What? That just sounds stupid. You act like we can’t hear other humans now and plants and stones already make noise. You’re just ignorant to the world around you. This is the reason why people think pot smokers are stupid. Your thoughts are so artificial like the others you get them from. Youre just a high guy like “woah man why do bake cookies but cook bacon? Brooooooo”
Yes I don't really get that unless it was still in the healing process or something...like the blood in the white scelera of his right eye after being returned to home post all the railway run ins he had..??
Having not known this movie is likely a take on Purgatory made me react to it in an authentic way. I'm fascinated by one of the questions I asked myself watching this summary: First thing that came to my mind when Andreas managed to grab a piece of cake was "What would I have done in this situation?" As Andreas sat there and ate the cake with Hugo out of the frame, I knew that I would have shared it after the first bite. I would have looked at Hugo and said "Dude, you have GOT to try this!" I think we would have both sat there and eaten the crumbs off the floor after the lives we had been living. It's unfortunate this was not the case in the movie... :(
Based on a previous comment, him not sharing the cake to Hugo was either the final strike or one of the final strikes. That sent him to the final level of hell, away from Purgatory.
@@therealkzero If the world ends tomorrow, year zero. Huh...I didn't even see the guy's avatar icon until nearing the end of this comment, and now this makes this even funnier...to me at least.
Feels very familiar, like depression, things don't suck, they're just bland and everyone seems to experience it differently than you do, makes you feel alone.
But then you have to consider that one person's normal is an atrocity to another. Everyone believes something that offends everyone that believes something.
I feel heaven can be considered as hell too. In the way that, you only know joy. Knowing that there are other feelings such as despair and knowning that your previously had a life where you had hardships, despair and many more feelings really gets to you. Knowing that your memories have no meaning damages my mentality (if i was there)
That's probably why you'd probably stay in purgatory. But, to be fair, you'd probably get out of purgatory what you put in. I think Andreas was a pretty shallow, lazy, and boring person. In the end, the most work he ever did was to steal someone else's cake, despite having all the freedom to do what he wants. I think heaven, at least in the case of the movie, is reserved for people who offer their best works and best selves, in exchange for other people's best works and best selves. As for the Bible, it says something about "wiping every tear from their eyes" and things not being "remembered anymore, for the former things have passed away". But I don't think it's an erasure of the memories, it's simply letting go of the past because it no longer affects the present. I don't think it means your memories have no meaning in heaven, it's just they become achievements from the obstacles you've overcome, instead of something that weighs upon the future.
@@dakarai47 Really am not, its the fact that you conciously know that there are other emotions but you cant unlock them, your stuck with hapiness. Some people yearn for adventure.
well if you're constantly joyous, then you can't be mentally damaged or you can't really feel sad about all those things. That's the whole point. You can't say: "Well you feel only joy, so you become sad because you can't feel other emotions except joy." but if you constantly feel joy then you can't feel sadness. So it's kind of an oxymoron.
@@bean_pasteyt8246 You wouldn't be upset about not being able to unlock certain emotions, if you couldn't unlock being upset. I think that is kinda the whole point. You leave all your negative baggage behind.
Nah, other way around, personally think that the title is a little misleading. I’m pretty sure the city he is in is purgatory, the limbo a soul sits in for untold amounts of time until they are ready for heaven. When he gets off of the bus, he is in hell. Specifically the 9th circle imo. It’s been a long time since I read The Inferno, but the 9th circle is A. The home of Satan himself and incredibly cold, it’s like Anartica pretty much. It’s split into 4 concentric circles and the final innermost circle is called Judeca after Judas. It is reserved for those who betray their benefactors, masters, those who have supported, up to and including God himself. Which trying to escape purgatory for Heaven before it’s your time would count.

That's actually not really true. Even some genius writers like Gogolj left parts of endings/endings open to interpretation. The thing is the story does have an end. The end is him getting dumped in the snowstorm. The issue is the meaning of it isn't clear to you. So it does have an end, you just aren't exactly sure on what it means.
