It's late spring and everything is starting to take off. It's super exciting but there are already some mistakes that have been made. We're going to took at what's coming in soon and what those mistakes are- if you're someone looking to sell at a farmer's market or you want to have consistent blooms throughout the season, my mistakes will be important for you to learn from so that you don't make the same ones!

I seriously love and look forward to your videos. They are informative and you talk about real issues that we all deal with and no one talks about. I appreciate you putting content out there for us because I know you are busy and have a million other things you could be doing, yet you show up for us and continue to educate us newer farmers. Thanks, Jessi! PS could you share a picture of the lilly beatle? I'm in CA and don't think we have them but I want to be on the lookout for them and see conflicting pictures online

Aww thank you for this! I make these videos because while I loved following certain flower farming youtubers a few years ago, I felt that some of this was missing. A few youtubers talked about challenges here and there but not to the extent where I think we should be freely sharing this information because we are all dealing with challenges everyday! I can't share photos within the thread but here's a good photo! More important is looking at the larvae eating the leaf and how gross it is! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_lily_beetle

@@bareflowerfarm yes, I totally agree! And when no one else talks about it, I know for me personally, I feel like I'm doing something wrong and that's why I have all these issues. The other channels are good for very beginner flower farmers but you and Danielle are the only ones I consistently watch anymore because you guys are extremely relatable and I continue to learn from you in year 2. Thanks for the link to the beatle. I've grown veggies for many years before flowers and it's definitely the worst I have ever seen pest wise. The mushrooms were the best this spring and now the pests are the worst. Any correlation idk but kinda interesting.

I’m so sorry! Do you know what to look out for when it comes to their eggs and larvae? That is probably the most important since you can mitigate a population explosion growth!

I love your content. And this video couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m a year 1 flower farmer and totally screwed up the timing of my sunflowers and zinnias. It’s such a learning curve.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Ah! I'm glad this was helpful but I'm sorry to hear about your season's challenges! In year 1, I successfully timed my sunflowers and zinnias but they literally ALL came in at the same time and then I had no flowers after lol! I don't know if you've committed to selling at a farmer's market but in year 1, I bought from a local grower to supplement and that not only helped sales wise, but also allowed me to learn about other flowers I never knew about. Is there a goal you're trying to hit this year? Or this is more for fun/learning?

I just went through and "weeded" My garden, I swear I pulled more volunteer tomatoes than weeds, but for foliage have you seen the black cherry pole tomato, the leaves and stems are a purplish black it is one of the coolest things I have seen. I need to double check the name though
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Ohh I haven't!! last year, I let my volunteer tomatoes go too far and was about to weed them when I decided to sell some to florists. Have you used tomato foliage in arrangements or tried to sell them to designers?

@@bareflowerfarm This is my trial year for flowers and a bunch of other projects. I want to have a Flower farm by next spring. I have not but now I will in my bouquets just to see what happens. I am wondering if the smell of the tomato plants will deter cats......... Which could be a bonus! (Animals tend to stay away from Tomatoes since they are a nightshade ;) )

Great video! I wonder about dividing that yarrow out as a border to help stop weeds and pests going in. You could use things like oregano and daffodils too, and create a cutable hedgerow.

Yes! I actually was thinking about doing that and putting it around the deer fence! I'm not sure if it'll stop the pests but can't hurt it!

Gahh!! I guess that makes sense. They were accidentally introduced in Montreal so I suspect northern Canadian bordering states would be more impacted. Are you growing lilies? If so, hope you are able to manage them!

Just read your article - thanks for putting that together. I don’t have a tunnel yet and used nematodes, mites and pirate bugs last year as well as painstakingly deadheading my 60 roses and bagging the blooms to stop the invasion… none of it worked but I suspect that it was because I didn’t recognise the signs early enough. We’re surrounded by hay paddocks with large amounts of clover. Interestingly, the pirate bugs were still around late autumn here despite only doing one release in late spring. My glads and roses were so badly damaged they didn’t even produce flowers - they were completely deformed. I’m actually getting irrigation called ‘wobblers’ and will use them early morning during drier periods. I’m hoping this will help mimic rain and have a side benefit of helping with spider mites. Fingers crossed!
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Oh man, that is quite the impossible situation. I'm so sorry to hear about the glads and the roses. Your glads may be overtaken by both Western Flower Thrips AND Glad Thrips as a heads up. The wobblers is genius. I haven't heard of that. We are supposed to get rain tomorrow and I'm so excited because we need a bit of a downpour. Fingers crossed to a better thrips season!
@catreeves963
@catreeves963 Месяц назад
@@bareflowerfarm yes, it was the worst! We normally get more rain here and I think that didn’t help at all so here’s hoping the new irrigation helps - they really were quite cheap too which is a bonus. I think they’re typically used on large nurseries and for ‘dust control’ 😬. Re the glads you’re probably right and I’ve made the call to not grow them next year because they were SO bad.

Hi, I love lilies! I live in Morris County, NJ. I'm wondering if you get the red lily beetle? They eat all parts of the plant and make a mess; I didn't have them the first few years growing lilies but I get them now and just curious if you have this pest in your part of NJ. I love your channel and content, keep up the great work!
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Hi! Unfortunately, I get the lily beetle. We are at a stage where it's currently "manageable" but in all honesty, I haven't grown as many before as I have this year so I'm conscious that I have to really manage them or else I risk an explosion in their population. Monitoring means I am killing the beetles themselves, killing the eggs and larvae. Luckily, their reproductive cycle is over a week so if I miss the egg stage, I certainly won't miss the larval stage. I'll miss some but the goal is to find the majority before they hatch!

Thank you for sharing!! How do you succession plant the Lillie’s? Do you coordinate buying at different time intervals?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Exactly! You got it! The challenge is that for the lilies I want to grow, most are offered in wholesale quantities. I don't need 400 at a given time! That's how I got into reselling some of my bulbs. The bulbs are sold at the lowest price on the market for quantities for 25/50 and I don't need to plant all 400 :)

Plant alliums, poppies, irises, lavender, daisies, foxgloves and lupins outside your fence to free up space in the fenced area. Foxgloves and lupins grow wild here, as do daisies, the HUGE deer population on Vancouver Island ignores these flowers. Alliums and lavender don't grow wild but deer hate the smell of any onion / garlic relative as well as most herbs. They also hate zucchini by the way. It's funny, I grew the romance series of bach buttons and I hated them, I only grow the black button variety now and I find them easy to harvest. I would consider planting a few trees for interesting foliage, such as dark leaved cherry. I also really like the look of hazelnut branches. Give you snaps a daily good old fashion blast with the garden hose to help with any type of pest pressure. The key is what you said about thrips and rain. They don't like directional water, use that to your advantage. I nail all my flowers and food crops with the hose for stem strength and preventative pest management. It works for me.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Thus far, the deer haven't touched my daffodils, allium, and lavender. They recently ate some foxglove, destroyed my lupin, astilbe, and even nibbled on peonies and mint. It's fawning season and I suspect that they are eating more than they normally would. I put in more deer resistant perennials so we shall see how they fare. Someone recommended a wobbler to mimic rain which I will look into, Luckily we are getting a downpour tomorrow or at least I hope!
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Месяц назад
@@bareflowerfarm fawns taste everything before they figure it out. That unfortunately is just life. Rain doesn't stop a hungry deer and they like to be around civilization to avoid predators, although where I live cougar and bear don't seem to mind wandering our city. I am assuming that because we haven't entered the dry season yet, the deer are less inclined to wonder into people's yards - except for tulips which is like candy to them. they will go up stairs and eat tulips out of planters next to front doors throughout my city.
@catreeves963

Honestly thrips are the worst!! My garden got overrun with thrips last year - ironically they left the snaps and feverfew alone and nailed my rose lily, sweet peas, Lizzies, roses, dahlias, and glads. This year I’m coming for them 😂 weeding ✅ nematodes ✅ will get onto mites and whatnot when we get to spring.

@mimlauj6869
@mimlauj6869 Месяц назад
Oh no, your Scoops! Do you have chicken wire around the base of your deer netting? I found out the first year, that they will bite thru the plastic and just come right in and munch. If you walk and check the base of your netting, you'll see holes if that's the case. And you can't just repair the hole, cuz they'll just make another one 😤 I have voles too, but they have left my scoops alone so far.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
That’s exactly what I need to put in! Chicken wire netting. I think it may actually be rabbits cutting the fence and then other stuff going in. I saw a fox in there the other day and knew I had a problem when my dog left the field through a hole in the fence 🤦🏻‍♀️. My bottle neck is getting the chicken wiring. I hate going to the store lol
