Ended up losing my power for most of the day. After running around all morning, I came home to hear four small explosions accompanied by a few bright flashes, and realized the transformer around the corner had caught fire and burned off the top of the telephone pole.

Nice shots of the damage! 5 star! :D It's not the actual transformer that caught fire, but the pole. Likely the wire came off of an insulator somehow, or the insulator failed, and current flowed through the wooden pole, causing it to burn. You'd know if a transformer catches fire ... boom! Big fireball! XD Also, notice how the fires at 1:10 and 1:20 are burning so cleanly - I wouldn't be surprised if the electricity burnt some holes in some buried natural gas pipes.

Hmm, that's interesting. I actually started recording a few minutes into this. There was a big explosion that first caught my attention, then 3 more accompanied by a few flashes of light. Looked like lightning.

Those explosions were caused by the wire making contact with the pole or other ground. I’m going to guess by the type of holding mechanism on the insulator that a rubber tie wire failed. Then either a limb fell on the wire causing it to jump off the porcelain or the high energy arc caused it to fall? The three explosions were from the reclosure operations. Then at some point the circuit locked out. Personally? Walking around primary wire laying on the ground is not a wise move. That wire could become re-energized at any moment & possibly kill the pedestrian.

Looks like 24,940Y14,400 Volts judging by those insulators.

Great video, and nice closeups of the aftermath...but I will say that getting up close to downed powerlines is extremely dangerous, and you were very lucky. Downed lines CAN still be live, even if they aren't sparking or burning. Even if the lines are dead, at any given moment (especially during windy or stormy conditions) they can become live through equipment faults in another area, trees or poles with live circuits falling into contact with the lines some distance away, etc. Bottom line is, unless the power company is right there and gives you the ok, NEVER, ever approach any downed lines!

If they are live and you walk too close there is a thing called " touch and step voltage".... There could be a difference of several hundred to several thousand volts between any two points be it on the ground, or between an object and the ground near a downed wire... Simply taking a normal length stride near a mess like this could get you electrocuted. If you are ever caught in a situation near a downed line, keep your feet together and shuffle away.

This footage was taken over a long period of time. When I was up close, that is when the area had already been deemed safe to enter. Before that point, I was told to keep away.

My friend's house got hit by a tornado in October. We were all in shock and not thinking when we were wandering around checking out the neighborhood. There were downed lines everywhere. So lucky no one got hurt. Be careful!!

Why don't the cables get put underground, it would be so much better

The town doesn’t own the electric lines, the power utility company owns them. It is the utility company that is too cheap to bury them.

I would be so scared that in these situations the high voltage wires tough the lower voltage wires below on the pole and fry everything one owns in a house...

Looks like they cut power, but be careful around dowed power lines. They can electrify the ground around them to a dangerous degree. 14kv and up...😮

that thing is probably from the 1980s. LOL I'm not surprised it had some issues.
