Great choice buying this land all those years ago and re planting it - World needs more of this 🙌 Intrigued as to what happened to all your Eucs? Prob explained in a future vid, but just working our way through 😊 We find them to be very hardy and amazingly fast growing - grow Nitens mostly here (central south coast - zone 9a )- love the young baby blue foilage, great tip about the price they sell for young, I should look into this! Thank you 🙏 I always wanted my own patch of woodland to look after I love working with trees, the eucs were a real shame I’m not sure exactly what it was that killed them but am thinking it was some extremely cold weather we had even though supposedly hardy 🤷♂️ so I’m not 100%
As a fellow smallholder it has been great to have a tour of your little kingdom. Bit jealous of all your projects on the go.As I am now in my seventies and I have had to reign back a bit. I used to keep Brecon Geese but hated locking them away in a large polytunnel during lockdown. They have been replaced by a few ducks which are really fun to keep and can free range, just having a few pellets when I lock them away at night. They lay better than my chickens and keep laying all through the winter, as there laying isn't governed by daylight hours. Anyway only recently found your channel so keep up the good work. @@SmallholdingUK We have about 10 acres it's an old organic market garden. Livestock wise we just have few sheep, two goats, 18 hens and 4 ducks. Occasionaly we have a couple of weaner pigs who stay for about 5 months before going to the abattoir. Fortunately we inherited 5 polytunnels, one now being a cherry tree cage. Inside we grow a lot of tomatoes, aubergines and peppers. For early crops sweetcorn, broad beans and potatoes plus lots of salads. Outside we have quite a few no dig beds for fruit and veg. 4 fields and a paddock. We supply our children and their families with produce. Surplus goes on the stall outside the house. Yes we are lucky our little house is attached to the holding.
I’ve had sheep Pygmy goats and did pigs once but just the poultry now Your place sounds amazing, we’ve just had our planning to build on our plot refused so we’re now working on the appeal process My plan is the same as yours really to try and be as self sufficient as possible and to supply my children as well
@@SmallholdingUK Good luck with that. We are trying to get planning permission for two small house so the kids can move close and live their dream. Our difficulties is the ever changing rules about sewage systems. We are close to a tributary of the Wye and subject to strict rules on phosphates entering water courses.
I think having the Narnia lamp is awesome! It will make visits to your smallholding special for your family. Land should be used, but also enjoyed. We adults sometimes forget to relax and enjoy life along with all the hard work. Your private camping area is perfect. When you were showing some of the area near the Narnia lamp, I thought you could put up a hammock and have a nice camping spot. Your private spot is so much better. Nice smallholding. This is our dream, a patch of land that we can turn into a smallholding. Doubtful that we could ever live on the land as it's so hard to get permission but as long as it's close enough to drive or cycle to we will be happy. So glad that I found your channel!
Thank you, good luck getting a bit of land you won’t regret it, I don’t live on my Smallholding it can be a pain sometimes but I find ways around things to make it work
If you can afford 12.5 acres (5 ha) you can build a barn under permitted development. I.e. you don’t need planning permission. Whilst you’re building the barn you can live in a building that conforms to the caravan act 1968. Do some research online and you’ll see that that could be a static caravan but better than that you could build your own log cabin or insulated small building as long as it is movable and below a certain size you can live in this for up to 3 years whilst you build your barn..If you start your smallholding and make it financially viable you can then apply for permitted development to build an agricultural tie dwelling.. good luck Search RU-vid for the Channel ‘field to farm’ and another good one ‘small farmer life’

Thanks, it was just agricultural just a rough grass paddock with not a single tree, I’ve had to get some planning for the shacks etc but got that when I was selling logs years ago as storage and work area also had to get planning believe it or not for a farm track 🤦♂️ they can be a pain in the arse planners I had them out again last year to check I wasn’t living in my caravan and I had put up extra shacks without asking them as it’s all hidden now and thought I would just risk it, she came down and said everything was fine including my new compost area as I had an old sheep shack there before even though much smaller than it is now, so I’m all good now and got what I need really
It was the first thing I put up in the first lockdown along with the rabbit fence around veg area, the heart of the veg garden as they say, I want to be pretty much self sufficient in compost this year
