That’s awesome! So that rod ya made has a substantial bend even in the bottom end when a fish is on, is that a characteristic of fibreglass? Looks fun

It is so much fun. Fiberglass has a lot of bend and loads with minimal effort which makes smallmouth a blast. The fight is intense and the bend/give gives a good cushion against hard runs and jumps. Highly recommend!

I love the lower Mad for smallies. But my creek of choice is in Ross county (mostly because it's close to me). Do you know about the Miami Vally Fly Fishing club in Dayton?

You are welcome! That is a great question. It does matter a little but not as much as what people think. I am going to do a video response to answer this because these conditions can be challenging and fairly common. I will post it asap. What part of the country are you fishing?

Could you use a 4wt 8’ fly fishing rod for small mouth? I’m looking at buying a few rods to get started but I’m looking for used and what’s available.

You could, but it would limit you in what you could throw at them as a 4 wt. wont be able to punch out larger flies especially through wind. If you could find one used, I would recommend a 6 wt. as it will cover your trout and bass needs and is really versatile. If you can find one with a fighting butt, even better! I will be covering this more in future videos as well. 4 wt. rods are more geared towards trout and panfish.

I haven't fished them up near Urbana but have fished a little lower. I am sure you can find them up there though!

Idk how y’all do it man! I’m from the same area and ain’t no way I’m getting any smallie interested using 10lb tippet. 6lb occasionally works but usually it’s down to 4lb floro which makes it very tough. Even out carp fishing I see videos of the fly plopping down just a few feet away an they take but if I do anything near that, all my carp spook n are gone. An the same as smallie, if I’m not down to a 6lb or 4lb floro tippet for soft landings and presenting a fly………they spook or just swim around the fly
