This is truly excellent. You can tell it's not choreographed, yet it's some of the prettiest swordplay I've ever seen, and that includes Hollywood.
@chalcedonycoral1943
@chalcedonycoral1943 4 года назад
Hollywood would be not against having something like that in the movie; but it would take too much resources, expertice from actors and elements of uncertainty to production in cases where leading actor is damaged by trauma during fencing (they can't be using proper amount of protection in film - viewers need to see actors' faces usually).

@Weedus I'd just stick to the normal Cold Steel Smallsword. The Colichemarde is alright but goes down to more of a "personal taste" kind of thing.

This is a fight. An elegant fight but a fight. They seem to be fencing/training/sparring as if the weapons were sharp. With sharps, a duel, a mistake, over extension, loss of balance, missed parry etc. could be fatal, unlike "sport" fencing. The tempo, the care, the thought will naturally be slower. One doesn't throw one's body at the opponent hoping for a conclusive hit as you won't get another chance if you miss. Every once and a while my coach would pull out a sharp small sword as a reminder, "attack" he'd say .. seeing that sharp point in guard really focuses the mind. I love how the fencers here continue the fight after a failed attack as they should when in earnest.

One thing I notice about these fencers is that they seem to be wearing leather shoes which slip and slide ever so slightly on the floor. I imagine that if modern sport fencers we're forced to train without rubber-soled shoes, they would end up fighting exactly like this.

Thank you very much again. Восхитительная работа, товарищи. Большое спасибо за всю проделанную работу. Надеюсь, глядя на вас, я научусь чему-нибудь. I wonder what [smallsword] foils they're using. I'd love to find some foils that actually bear a remote resemblance to the weapon they're supposed to be imitating, for once. [EDIT: By "foil" I mean it as the term was originally used--a sword with a "foiled" point or blade for practice, and not a modern sport-fencing foil. :p]
@tobybrewer193
@tobybrewer193 10 лет назад
Firstly, they are using blunt small swords. Secondly, the epee is the small sword , not the foil. The foil was only a practice weapon whilst the epee was and is the actual small sword.
@HipposHateWater

I was, in fact, referring to them as practice weapons for training smallsword, but thanks anyways :)

I recently purchased some from Zen Warrior Armory. Not got them yet but there are some that are quite smallsword like. Mine is based on a late design, 19th century, and lacks the knucklebow or finger rings.
@joaomelo7538
@joaomelo7538 10 лет назад
Toby Brewer But he was correct, foil was the practice weapon for the smallsword, all the rules of right of way and the only chest is valid came from the fact it was a training weapon and there wasn't a great deal of protective gear back then, so these rules were meant for safety in the begining, the chape evolved since then because of practical reasons. The epee is not a smallsword by any stretch of imagination, the epee was a weapon designed for sport, because some people thought that the rules of foil were idiot and we needed a more realistis aproach for sports, it was remotly based on it, but it was specificly made for sport fencing.

@louisjolliet3369
@louisjolliet3369 3 года назад
@@christopherbartlett8100 Interesting because I do fence sport épée and based on your comment I seriously question if you fence as you claim. I cannot imagine a sport fencer, even an elder one, not finding this very slow. But that's perfectly fine. As I said they have beautiful technique and are a treat to watch. I think it is obvious though that the slow speed of their movement is what allows them to stay at range, use the bind extensively like that and have these great looking, long exchanges. If they were fencing full speed it would look much different. Not saying they can't and for the record, I would love to learn from them.
