The football story line from season 4 of Smallville is an important time in Clark's journey to becoming Superman. When all he wanted to do was be normal, Clark discovered that football was more than that. Taking responsibility for his actions on the field and making a conscious decision to hold back for every moment he played proved that he might be able to hold the entire world on his shoulders one day.
