I watched this video since I was looking at smart breakers, but for a slightly different purpose: Energy monitoring in a residential setting. As part of a smart home it would be nice to know how much energy is used by each circuit. I looked at the Leviton system, which looks like what I want, but there are other systems as well (one thing I liked about the Leviton panel is no pigtails with AFCI/GFCI breakers, but that is really minor, although it makes for a neat and easy installation). Other smart features such as notifications when a fault occurs and remote turn on/off is a plus, but less important for residential. All part of a smart home / building. Would love to see future video on that and hear your thoughts. Thank you for all of your videos, you are fantastic! Love your work!

You should look at emporia vue monitoring solution. Cheapest solution on the market, can be jailbroken for totally stand-alone integration and off-cloud monitoring.

It would be nice to get a room by room breakdown of consumption. I work from home, and it would be nice to know how much I spend on electricity in my home office for business purposes. Local control on a LAN would be nice, but if an internet conection isn't optional, I'm not interested.
@skirata3144
@skirata3144 Год назад
@@willdwyer6782The breakdown would depend on your wiring since you can only measure entire circuits at the panel level. If you’re just interested in your home office you could use smart plugs or something like Shellys to monitor your consumption that way.

Seems something like this too if you needed to shut it off to do work on that circuit even a LOTO would need a special process like put in manual only mode then turn off so that the monitor service does not re-activate it while it is being worked on.

You Miss the Schneider Electric smart panels, used in Europe for a while and now in the US New home are been installed. Regular electricians can’t deal with it because they are not trained. Took me a few weeks to been in classes to install and setup those new panels but is gonna be the future in service. I love it.
@CrimFerret
@CrimFerret 3 года назад
So if you manually flip the breaker off, the monitoring service can still turn it back on? I'd make darn sure the circuit I was working on was set manual so they couldn't. Their ability to monitor doesn't take priority over my desire not to be shocked or worse.

This is very dangerous having someone other than yourself with the power to decide when and where you have power. Big brother is extremely deceiving right now. A shady electrical contractor just installed one of these on my mom’s house and now I have to check if these breakers are in manual or auto. I’m now looking at traditional panels and breakers to replace what they did. This guy butchered the walls and outlets throughout the house. The whole purpose was to get a reputable company to verify the safety and integrity of electrical system in this older house which only had a 100 amp main. With all these extra appliances and electronics now days, she was starting to have issues here and there throughout her house. She gave him a $2000 deposit and now wants an additional $2900 for work that is now more dangerous than before.

In Europe these smart breakers are booming. They work via Alexa (or other app) and ideal for 2nd home lighting, poolpump, irrigation system etc. When it rains you turn off the irrigation. With a remote camera you can check if it works too!
@Alphasig336

You can also shutoff breakers as people come and go. Eliminate phantom power use when no one is home. Motion can control circuit instead of switch Safer and more environmental to turn off all circuits that are not critical when no one is there. IE bathroom circuits that have heaters. It prevents fires from left in heater (common) or just failures that cause shorts and possible fire.

Entertainment venues have started using these type of systems to remotely turn on and off theatrical lighting and audio equipment via DMX lighting protocols. I'd like to see a video about the risks of locking in to one brand of internet-connected cloud-hosted startup company tech for something as basic as home utilities. My house has two Square D QO panels installed in the 1980s, I can still buy breakers for them today. For goodness' sake, you can still buy replacement breakers for Federal Pacific panels and they're... well you did a whole video on that. If I install a smart panel, and five years from now I need to add a circuit, am I going to need to re-do the panel all over again because I can't get an 'obsolete' 2022 model year breaker, or the company folds and I can't reconfigure the panel without their cloud server? Smart panels are a really interesting idea but I need to have confidence it's going to be done once and last 25+ years, and "smart" devices are not known for longevity. Am I mistaken? Do any of these smart panels at least use some sort of open standard that someone else might manufacture parts or independent controllers for?

Depending on how critical the application is, you could have an air gapped stand alone network.
@CoastalSphinx
@CoastalSphinx 3 года назад
@@Jeeperanthony That could potentially add security, but it's very difficult to get right. It definitely isn't safe to use a separated network as your only security, because that makes the whole network and everything on it an attack surface, and if any attack succeeds then everything is compromised. It can even be done accidentally - somebody plugs a patch cable in the wrong port, and next thing you know all your VFDs have ransomware installed on them.

Either on board with drawing(like you did on your first videos which were really good maybe the best) or you can show the real thing you are explaining about. Almost to the point where youre already in bed and forget a light somewhere or your kids forgot you can use your phone to kill the lights
@richardgray1730
@richardgray1730 4 года назад
If you are looking to justify the cost of smart devices I can believe it hard to justify the cost. So let me give you a few examples that give a friend of mine value. A friend has a lake house used by family and friends.. yes she loves the thermostat, but there is a smart valve on the main water line, the outside porch lights can be turned on from the her parked car. She can water the grass remotely. The front door bell/camera is important and the last device are the door locks... These devices give her peace of mine and that alone was enough. She had a flood once now the water sensor will shut off the house water... tripping on the front entry stairs is a real problem when they are not light... strangers at the door... Think about these smart devices how they help day to day... and how they help when something goes wrong. Then you will see their real value.
@hgbugalou
@hgbugalou 4 года назад
Not worth it for residential to have smart breakers, though energy monitoring is handy. Smart lighting is useful too. I've been slowly introducing smart automation in my home and that's where I have found the most use along with door locks. One press of a button at my bed and all the lights in the house go off and the doors lock.

I’m extremely curious how someone securely authenticates into that low voltage controller. If you say a PIN - prepare for me to scoff! :) Even if you say a 6-digit PIN - ‘hard pass.’ If you say SSL certificate - then you’ll get my attention.

Personally i see this more like a novelty and looking for a solution for a problem that never was there in order to sell more, the only logical use of such brakers are on lightning control panels but those are already there long time ago with the use of relays or contactors with computer boards in then, the reason why i see this useless its because if there is a problem with a load and the braker trip then an electrician its called anyway to deal with it and fix the actual problem cause turn the braker back on remotely could just worsen the problem or be a hazard also why anyone would want to kill the power of loads that don't require to be killed like servers,computers,medical equipment,refrigerators other than actual loads that you want to control like lights but like i said there are tons of solutions already for that and this is just a fancy way to keep sales up.

You could install smart lights and present sensors in each room. They are easy to program and connected to each other. When nobody in the room for x minutes, turn off the lights. When somebody enters the room and it’s dark, turn on the lights. If it’s still bright in the room, don’t turn on the lights.

I for the life of me don't get why they didn't focus on backwards compatibility. With proper design, there would be no need for a special panel (just have plug at top of breaker). They could have had wireless/ethernet module in a small side box, then just run connector cables from each breaker to side box. Nope, rip it all out and replace it all. Cut out most of the potential market due to that choice.
