Mine was installed for free, and is saving me a small fortune on my electricity bills. Cheap overnight electricity (6.9p/Unit) so really cheap to charge my EV and run my washing machine and dishwasher overnight! :)

I emailed the company responsible for installing smart meters where I live and told them I don’t want one now or at anytime in the future and got them to email me back confirming my preference. I have not been pestered since.

@pauldalton8016 agree 100%. My only fear is that they'll put through some sort of legislation allowing the utilities to put people without a smart meter on a much, much higher tariff.

Never having one, the harassment is now becoming oppresive, my meter is indoors , try getting in without my permission , which they will never obtain. I have never been behind with the bills, in fact they currently owe me nearly a grand, so whats the premise with this obsesion, SMART is DUMB

It’s not like these companies would let a chance like that go by? Look how tiny they are in phones and tablets? Just saying. I really couldn’t care if people get a better deal. My integrity and privacy is more important to me.

You will have to pay. 40gms meat a week. Your money will have an expiry date=no gifts, no black market. 2 items of clothing per YEAR. and on and on and on............

With out me asking, a man from the the power company (a monopoly), came to my door and informed me that my "OLD" meter was to be replaced. I was informed that the meter was the property of the Electric Co. and it had to be "upgraded". The young man shut off my power at the street and replace my 50 year old meter with a digital device. The next month, along with my bill came a printout that showed what each appliance's use of electricity was. I was and am appalled. As long as I pay the bill, it should be no ones' concern how much power was used for laundry or water heating. I can only think that at some point, someone will decide that my water heater uses too much power. And then what?

Digital IDs have been in place on smart devices for a while. Last year I went on my app store and typed in digital IDs and they came up. I've never used any of them.

Another RU-vidr I watch told me about smart meters at some point in the future things are going to change he thinks. At the moment, big companies get charged for the amount of power they use and it's three-phase and they use power factor correction boxes that make sure that everything's on a perfect sign wave. At home, we only have one phase, and all your modern electronics run slightly behind the sine wave, and that's called power factor. You're all tungsten lamps. Use the perfect sine wave because they were just a big resistor, really. Modern electronics run slightly behind the sign wave, so that means they have a poor power factor which means that maybe for every seven kilowatts that you use on your old meter the power companies actually have to put in maybe nine or ten. At some point, witj these new smart meters, they could just change it so instead of you being charged for seven kilowatts, you'll be charged for the full ten kilowatts as you're not running on the sign wave, motors are the same like in your washing machine. So at the flick of a switch, you'll get charged the full 10 instead of the 7 that your old meter could see due to a poor power factor. I'll stick with my old meter thanks

The main thing is they can cut you off without sending a person to do it. I have smart meter gas, electric and water, my main worry is ID cards which they are indirectly getting us prepared for, check are you 25 or buying goods that you need to be only 18 to buy. School pupils having id cards for school. This we are freemen not slaves is our right, innocent until proved guilty so why do I need to carry id?

I have been 'conversing' with Eon and Octopus (current supplier) over the past year. They have both said that my meter is past its certification date of 2001 and needs to be changed. My reply to that was; "Why wasn't it changed 23 years ago then?". Now, after many refusals of their offers of a smart meter, Octopus have finally told me, in writing; "We cannot change your meter without your permission, unless it is faulty". Worth knowing!

I've yet to be shown the relevant legislation that says it's now a legal requirement for everyone to have a 'smart' meter, which everyone I've spoken to who tries to sell me a new meter, says it is. They've yet to provide that evidence. Until that day, no way. Even if that day arrives, I'll still fight it. Don't like when people in 'authority' think they can tell me what to do.

My gas and electricity provider keeps e-mailing me to have a smart meter put in. I have finally told them I don't want one as they are not 100% accurate and can also be monitored by other people, hackers etc. My friends also have problems over cheaper tariffs and reading the meters all the time as their companies keep asking them to check them. I will continue to use my pay as you go meters which suit me as a pensioner and keep ME in control!

When my old electricity meter ceased functioning in 2023, I was given no option but to have a smart meter installed. I insisted on it being in dumb mode. I send my meter readings every month, and no problems so far.

What worries me is this dumb mode. How do you actually know it is dumb? They wouldn’t offer a more expensive meter if you could just turn off all the ‘smartness’. Sorry but I wouldn’t trust this feature.. I personally think they can over-ride this, their end.

I had an over a year long battle with octopus over the smart meters. I said they are giving false numbers etc. etc. for over a year they were saying I am wrong I am wrong the smart meters aren’t faulty those are correct figures, they refused to remove them. (If I realised this house had smart meters when I bought it I never would have), they said I am £400 in debt to them. So in the end I gave up and switched to another provider. Then if by some miracle, on the day my accounts switched they said “we owe you £370” that was in addition to the £400 I apparently owed them. Interpret that how you will.

Me too. My PAYG Dumb Phone is for making and receiving telephone calls and texts only. If I want to go online I use my Laptop. When I leave the house I am not tracked by my phone.

They've tried every angle to get you to have one, save holding little kittens hostage (although I could have missed that one). They're now suggesting that some suppliers could offer you cheaper off peak electricity - note "could". Even if it was a guarantee, the fact is that if everyone washed their smalls and dishes "off peak" THERE WOULDN'T BE AN OFF PEAK....!

Data is worth more than gold and a meter can scan for far more data, physical and biological, than they admit to! I’m guessing they’re being offered tremendously large payouts per meter by the government…and then the government can potentially hold an entire nation to ransom, or the utility providers which provide nothing, and are just billing agents allegedly….but I’ve since heard they’re actually credit brokers…were you told you were applying for a credit agreement when you contacted your suppliers??? Gas and electricity supplies are paid for, in full, by the government 5 years in advance!

If it says smart on the tin it means you are not. I'm just about to buy a house for the last 10 years I've been off grid, and my first job when I move in. Is to tell the energy meter companies ( Because they do not supply anything) to come and get their meters. Beware peeps, they just want CONTROL OVER YOU. Oh did I mention, " if the service is free the product is YOU"

I got conned into a water meter. A knock on the door saying they needed to replace the old lead pipe coming into my home, no change to existing service with warning that future issues i would not be covered and would have to pay for any leak repairs. i never thought much of it so said yes. They failed to mention they were installing a smart meter outside my property, so now i have no control of when they will eventually force me into switching to it. I did complain that i was mislead into agreeing to it (i would have refused had i known) but as its now outside of my property i have no rights to get it removed. EON are now trying a similar tactic saying my existing meters are end of life and must be replaced by a smart meter, the end game is full control of our usage of energy/water, to increase charges based on time of day and demand and the ability to turn it off completely with the click of a mouse button, they can only do it with these devices,

So far this year i have had 86 txts from my energy supplier saying my smart meter isn't working properly and not sending accurate reorts when called fo4r. Ok this is the scenario A. i dont have a smart meter. B. i dont want a smart meter. C i dont need a smart meter. D if they try to force one by dirty tricks then i will sue them for causing harassment alarm and distress. After they try to enter my property and telling them they have no right of entry and their common laws prevail in a fantasy world. they do not have a leg to stand on. if they bring a bailif and the police then they are breaking the law because police are there to stop a breach of the peace. If the bailif and the energy company cause a breach of the peace then i will give them the biggest headache they have ever seen

If they are hacked, or God forbid, the authorities want to, they can cause a fire by repeatedly switching them on and off. If they decide you can’t use a certain electrical item then they can spy on you to see if you are in compliance. I’ll stay with my old meter for s long as possible thanks.

Fun fact. The Smart Meter program was introduced 15 years ago by, drum roll, Ed Milliband! No one can actually provide any information as to what benefits the current role out of Smart Meters has brought, except for "word salad" responses. The huge cost of the Smart Meter program is borne by the consumer as the costs are simply added to their bills. The Smart Meter program is like HS2, over budget, hugely delayed, and should be cancelled. A new approach to whatever they were trying to achieve needs to be developed using modern technology. Eg why do they use a proprietary display, which when it fails is difficult to replace, rather than talk to your phone?

We are a family of 3 with *VERY* moderate usage, maybe running the heating for an hour in the morning & an hour in the evening in the height of winter & are generally very parsimonious with energy useage yet.... We have apparently been over budget every week now since having a smart meter installed. ,🤔

I have smart meters. In truth, my old gas meter was absolutely ancient , the metal shelf and screws it was sitting on was rusting away . However, they don’t communicate with my supplier.. a blessing in disguise.. the company couldn’t do it same day as meter install and they didn’t turn up to a later date appointment. Thankfully, in that time I woke up! I just send my meter readings once a month.. or twice when prices due to change at end of month.

I was told by my energy company that my meters were dangerous when I asked the meter reader who does door to door readings he told me that's a load of rubbish it's all a scam I will never ever get one no matter what

We have had a smart meter for many, many years never had a problem, nobody has ever told us we need a new meter, as I had the place rewired and a new meter fitted when I moved in over 25 years ago. The only place in our kitchen where I can fit an upright fridge freezer is against where the meter is housed, so in order to read our meter we would have to move the Fridge, one of the main reasons why we had a smart meter fitted. If I worried about what may happen or conspiracy theories, I would never leave the house in case I got run over. At age 84 life’s too short to worry about what may or may not happen. The only thing I want is to see is this government removed in my life time, if for nothing else than the future of our children and grand children.

what is a fact regarding these meters as has happened in other countries, these are the precursor to shifting peak tarriffs. The constant realtime data stream enables the energy companies to set new tarriff times and your bills rocket. Ofgem have started the process that will ultimately allow them to do this

One thing that annoys me with these smart meters is the old ones went dumb because they couldn't be upgraded. And guess who's paying for it? You and me. Yeah. Maybe they should have got it right first time round but no let's add the cost of this to everybody's bills and when we have to replace the old that couldn't be upgraded we'll add that on to everybody's bills again 😠

I was talking to an octopus engineer that was installing a gas smart meter,and he said all these meters will have to be installed by law in about ten years time ,gas and electric ⚡ .

A "smart meter" isn't smart. It enables the supplier of electricity to turn off the supply at will. One never knows if the meter is accurate, unlike the old tried and tested mechanical meters. They were introduced so that you don't need a meter reader. If you live in area with a weak or non existent mobile signal, they don't work. Most meters are under the stairs and try getting a mobile signal on your phone under the stairs if you only have one bar holding your phone out of an upstairs window. We have a 3 phase supply which needs a man to read the meter every month. They put in a fancy new smart meter 20 years ago... top of the range with day and night tariffs. It's never worked! The signal for mobile phones is pretty much non existent... you have to go upstairs or up the hill a bit. The data from the "smart meter" won't transmit because the meter is surrounded with steel cabinets and structural steel girders - a Faraday cage - so no mobile signal!

Smart meters are another tool for those outside your front door to control stuff inside your home. How do they make you smarter? They are smarter than the dumb people that have them - being informed by these meters is not being in control, its the exact opposite. Pop back in a few years so we can say 'Told you so' cheers

If you're like me, and have been using prepayment methods for electricity for decades, then smart meters are the best thing ever! No more having to find 50p's, or going to the shop to buy a top-up card or top-up an electronic key. You go online, make the payment, and usually withing a few minutes, the credit is added to the meter! Of course, this is just my experience.

Fair enough, but there is a lot of margin for it to go wrong, what happens if you can't get online or if they credit the meter incorrectly or change the price of the tariff without you knowing or decide to restrict your use to save power ect, ect, ect 🤔

Smart meters. The key to the door for variable tariffs on a daily basis and on an individuals daily useage. They monitor and know by the load what within reason you are doing. So, invasion of privacy too.
