Quiet Quitting is the act of only working what you are required to do and nothing more. Some might think this is giving up or not being a team player. However, in my opinion, it is simply doing your job but not giving away your extra labor for free. Some have found that the extra work to get the next promotion is just not worth it. I mean it usually is literally not worth in in terms of hours worked. You might put in 25% more hours but only get 10% more pay. In effect, this is a REDUCTION of your effective hourly wage. Quiet quitting had been a struggle for me because I was taught to "do the best" and "be the best" in everything. That resulted in working uncompensated overtime, skipping meals, etc. However, during the heart of the pandemic, when I saw my company do nothing more than call us "heroes", cheer us on for the extra work we were putting in (boy did we put in extra work), and refuse to give us any more than the standard 3 to 4 percent yearly raise, I snapped out of it and finally opened my eyes. I finally realized that doing extra work only benefits my employer and costs me valuable time and money. I now only do the work that I am contractually required to do, nothing more....nothing less. It's not personal, it's just business.

Organizations love that gullible nice guy/gal mentality and you were easy prey. This whole Quiet Quitting being pushed in the media is to put fear in workers to work more that they're paid for. I would suggest quitting the job fully if they try that as a recent study shows 5 million less baby boomers in the workplace than expected and for the next 10 years 10s of millions them will be quitting which means a long term worker shortage.

Nothing wrong with just doing your job. In your example, if you can make 100k in 40 hrs and 20k on side hustles with the other 10 hrs then more power to ya. Otherwise, I'd love to make another 15k annually. On the flip side, if you are supposed to be doing 40 hrs and you are only purposely doing 20 hrs so you can work 20 hrs for another company and earn two full time salaries then you are the thief and not the employers.

More importantly though this is a very important topic so thank you for bringing this up Frances. This is class warfare between us ( the workers ) and them (those who own capital and the factories). The best thing you can do for your workplace is unionize!

I have been a “quiet quitter” all my working years, that is almost 35 years. I always thought my personal life was also very important. Why would anyone work an extra 5 to 10 hours per week free of charge? Make no mistake, the only person taking advantage of the situation is the boss. My attitude has always been if you want me to work extra hours, then pay me accordingly.

I work at a steel mill. Definitely a rough environment. I’m a machine operator. I’ve been operating machines at my current job for 8 years. At this steel mill , I work at. I work on the most physical production line in the steel mill. There are many production lines in this mill. We are actually producing the steel for the Tesla cyber truck and we make the steel for space x.

Quiet Quitting is a trap. If you quiet quit and others go above and beyond their required work they will get the pay raises, bonuses and advancement. Meanwhile you are at the top of the list to be laid off or fired.

Bc when you want to be promoted, these bosses want you to "perform at the next level", so you work hard. Then when merit increases come you get a measley 3% because your boss tells you "it's all part of your job" So the idea of working hard is a lie and manipulation from the boss.

I work in a manufacturing machine shop and was going above and beyond running 3 machines, improving production, took on a lead position, training people and trouble shooting issues. Here i tought i would get a 10% raise My one year review came exceeding expectations but I was told because I got paid more than others it was unfair to give me a decent raise because other people who did the bare minimum but were underpaid didn't earn what I did. I got a 1.5% raise and They also placed me as an average performer because the company wants to be fair to everyone. Since than I stepped down from my lead position and Only run one machine now, sometimes two but i take my time now and do the bare minimum. Watching this while at work.

I've taken on a couple of new roles. Not tasks. Roles. Two people quit, one being my manager a project coordinator and an accounting assistant. So I'm now doing so much work I literally dread go to work. The owner of the company doesn't even care he feels like I should just do it and do it with a smile because their company is so special. They are actually the chosen ones disguised as real like demons. I'm so sick of these people. I'm not quiet quitting and actively seeking a new position and when I find one it's to hell with this company.

The problem is, that if you give 120%, you gain almost nothing, BUT if you drop to 80%, I can guarantee you they will notice. I was earning 20% more than my peers, they expected wonders from me all the time, every year. The stress was not worth it. Especially when the 20% more were eaten up by 43% taxes alone. It’s crazy!!!!

Every year my boss asks me to apply for a supervisor position. I keep denying him every year because the increase in pay does not justify the extra work with less availability for me to go on personal vacations. I'm happy where I am and yearly cost of living pay increases and admit that I see what I can get away with by doing middle of the road work.

@@melindagallegan5093 There should not even be a stupid term for it. Trying to make people look lazy for actually doing there job and refusing to stay another 2 hours after their regular 10 hr shift. People need to get enough sleep to take care of themselves. This term was probably made up by some slave driving company like Amazon who won't even let you use the bathroom.

Quiet quitting is not new at all. We just gave it a name. In fact this makes me think of my favorite comedy movie from the 2000's (Office Space) where the main caracter (Peter) quiet quits: Bob: You see, what we're actually trying to do here is, we're trying to get a feel for how people spend their day at work... so, if you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you? Peter : Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour. Bob: Da-uh? Space out? Peter: Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

This was super informative and helpful! I'm 24 and have recently received my first annual appraisal/raise and was severely disappointed as the hours and excess work/results I put in this year and the prior were met with high praise in the review, yet my pay went up only 11% (65k to 72k) for a line of work that generally starts off around 90k annually. I certainly put in more than 40hrs a week, even working weekends to complete data entry and other tasks. As you mentioned transitioning up, this will have been my 3rd year and I'm planning to resign before the next work year. Our semi-decent culture took a huge shift this year and leadership is now "consumer crazy" (self-explanatory...). Super happy with my decisions and the experiences of others like yourself to help maintain some semblance of sanity in this shit capitalist storm.

10-15 years ago when I tried to get a job and applied at tens of companies the salaries were low (I couldn't even afford rent in that city - the capital of the country), the bosses expected you to work overtime without getting paid and they would treat you like crap while getting richer off of your hard work. A friend was told that she had to work full time for 6 days a week (and only get paid for 5) and if she didn't like it, "there are hundreds of candidates waiting at the door to take your place". I had a college degree and a master's degree, but despite that I kept receiving low salary offers. So I moved back to my home town and started my own business, doing what I learned in college. It hasn't been easy but I've managed to live decently and I've even put some money aside, which comes in handy in these time when inflation and energy costs are throught the roof. I grew up in poverty and I know how to be frugal and yet have almost everything I want (the only thing missing is a house, which is expensive). I buy everything at a sale or Black Friday (except for food). I'm also a manager since I own and run my small business. So yeah, there is no need to kill yourself working for a boss.

I like how people criticize quiet quitters as being lazy but never thought about employers and big corporations are screwing little guys over that cause them to work no more then they have to. QQs are not lazy, they just value something more than just climbing the corporate ladder

In a previous tech job I used to go above and beyond so I could get a promotion and raise. When my review came up, not only was I not promoted, but my annual bonus was denied. That's when I decided to quiet quit for 6 months as I was looking for new job.

I quite quit wayyy back in about 1st grade. Quietly quit my entire way out of school and didn’t go to college. Now I sit quietly enjoying my years of actual fulfilling work and passions that aren’t driven or owned by anyone but me..

Good stuff! I used to work as a public accountant doing audit. During "busy season" we were expected to work 55 hours/week minimum, which included working saturday's if needed. I was paid a salary so the more hours a worked, theoretically the less I earned/hour. Now a work for a publicly traded company as an accountant. I work hourly. If I calculate my 40 hr/week I get paid more per week than my salary when working at public accounting if I calculated a 40 hour work week. It is better to work hourly if you have to work over 40 hours per week because now I get paid 150% (1.5x) hourly rate for every hour that I work OT. work life balance is important and getting paid more when you work more is important.

So true. In a nutshell, if you're salaried, you want to work the least number of hours possible, because the less hours you work, the more you get paid per hour. Also, the idea that a very efficient white collar worker (especially tech jobs) can work two full time jobs at the same time is genius. Kinda "sticking it to the 'man'", if you know what I mean. Yea, boy!!

Every employee should put in the minimum effort in their tasks and devote the rest of their time socializing and building networks with their colleagues. The goal is build up your connections and quit in 2 - 3 years for a higher paying position. The higher up you go in the corp world, social connections and social awareness matters a lot more than technical skills.

i did this all throughout my fast food career from 2014-2021, i would never stay past my shift even if the next shift was late coming in, or if someone else wasnt doing their job im not picking up that slack unless my paycheck gets picked up 50%

I work a Hourly Job with a Beer Distributor in Texas. I’m the Bottom of the Barrel Merchandiser Employee .. Work a Mon-Friday with Weekends Off. Sounds great!! And at times I stop to think I Have a Great Job.. it all comes down to Management and Supervisors. Been at it for 4 years. I don’t wanna Grow an Ego but I’ve been in my Region for a While now and See everyone Come and Go, I’ll consider myself as a TeamLead. I’ll Basically Orientate Fresh employees and let them shadow me, considering I have one of the busiest Stores in my Area, and by myself, the Stress adds Up, and shoves down Multiple Tasks, I am Over worked with my Deliveries and beyond Burned Out. Coming from the Marine Corps. I was very Motivated within my Working abilities and Ethics. But over time my Body, mind, and Spirit was Crushed with my Job over time.. I still do the Best I can, but it obviously shows in my Work performance, it’s Shot down the past Year. I am wanting to just walk away for Good with my Job and Just Focus on my Health

I work for a large insurance company and with the inflation they only gave 3% max last year and 4% this year saying to us that inflation is. not that bad- while at the same time making the argument to our customers and departments of insurance that they need to raise insurance premiums by 10-15% because of inflation. Unbelievable!

I just quiet quit on my previous job coz the variable work schedule, days off and mandatory 12 hours shift is no longer healthy and they don’t seem to have a plan to hire additional people we’ve been short staffed since I started with that job so i quiet quit 😊

I think this is interesting, how do you handle it mentally? I am spending so much of my time at work, how can I not try to do my best without it feeling like I am wasting the majority of my time being mediocre. I don't like the stress either, but how do you slow done like that?

I tried quite quitting today, and my manager decides to hold all the hourly leaders another 2.5-3 hours extra. No notice given, for meeting pushed out. I'll be writing a letter asking to be demoted. They have no respect for workers personal time.

Quiet quitting is for fools. If you get that type of reputation in a large company you will never get past the mail room. I worked at NBC a good part of my work life. I have, of all things, a degree in Geology from Queens College. It was sort of a company joke. I think Frank Field in the News Weather department had a similar degree. Anyway, I started in the mail room and retired at a mid-level management position at 62. The thing is my hard work was noticed and respected by a Vice President named Mister White and he took me into his Finance Department. Today I live easy. I get a pension from GE (bought NBC at that time). NBC matched 1/2 of any money you can save up to 7% so imagine saving 10.5% over 15 or so years, with interest.. Just save your yearly increases. Then you have Social Security and at least 5% interest on the money you saved with NBC/GE's 3 1/2 % and your 7%. You want to Quiet Quit......Go for it. Homelessness can't be that bad, right? Your reputation is more important than gold in many many avenues!

I’m an entrepreneur. But I do tend to work more than I necessarily need to not for recognition but because I work in a deadline driven industry. They would pay us a stipend and feed us on top of the salary (accounting firm works lol). But I’ve always gotten great raises and bonuses and recognition. When I was a W2 employee- I gave myself a raise by leaving. I’ve also done the thing where I had one 40 hour a week contract and a 20 hour a week W2 job. That lasted 8 months lol. Now I just balance by making sure I spend time with family at night and I don’t work weekends. But for a handful of nights or weekends I will crank it out, I don’t mind doing that.

In october my contract is going to change for 'multi-skill/role'. Which basically means i will be expected to do 2 or more peoples worth of work. FOR THE SAME PAY !!! I used to care and enjoy what i was doing but with the way everything is heading aka maximise work, minimal pay and excessive overtime because of staff cuts i don't really give a shii anymore. Bare minimum is what they will get and i hope when we get busy during christmas they regret this choice of expecting everyone to go above and beyond instead of hiring more staff. All part of the great reset agenda obviously. But it still sucks there isnt anything anyone can do. Everyone is tired of working for less whilst these CEO's and managers get more holiday and pay rises for doing f*ck all.

I work for a major corporation and a 2% annual raise is pretty much the standard NO MATTER how hard you work and what you contribute. Bonuses are just as bad. There's no real incentive to go above and beyond.

It's been tough for me. My job pays pretty under market (20ish %) but it's basically recession proof and I basically can't get fired. On the other hand during the pandemic I was salary and was working 12-16 hour days usually. I only got one pay bump (3%) in 5 years working there. I've tried to get other positions and have come really close but I keep getting deselected towards the end of the process. I have another manager/performance review coming in October. Hopefully I can negotiate better terms or "quite quitting" for me it will be.

I just work hard no matter where I’m at but I make sure to never over exert myself to the point that leads to burnout. I don’t care if anyone tells me to work harder or produce more, I’m not God I do what I can and focus on that.

I make $27/hr, if i work 40 hrs and do 40 hrs worth of work then i only get $27/hr, but if i slow down, take breaks, and stop caring. I can get away with doing about 5 hrs of "work" in a 40 hr work week. This brings my pay to $216/hr... I'd rather think I make $216/hr for 5 hrs, then make $27/for 40 hrs. Just sucks im not remote, so i have to literally sit here for 40 hrs a week.

I always do more than expected at work. I am lucky that I work at a company that saw this and rewarded me. It has been 9 years and my salary is more than double what it was when I started. It does motivate me to do more for the company.

I have lost so many work friends this year to new companies because they are all getting much better pay just by leaving. If my job and my boss wasn't so chill, I probably would have done the same. Inflation is just out of control and people can barely afford hsouing anymore. It is sad to see they all leave but I dont blame them. Can't or rather dont count on companies to match your salary with inflation even if the HR snakes promise salary review to match the market. Nobody is going to take better care of you than yourself.

I'm working 2 jobs right now, both are as software developer, but one is as a tech lead, so I'm doing more managing grunt work in a big company in the other I'm working on a small software system that is simple, I work 6 hours a day for one of them and like 8 hours for the other, then I just walk for two hours listening to music in my neighborhood park and I unwind, I also watch youtube. Now I'm just starting I have a couple of months doing it.

I’m an engineer and our company adds to our paycheck straight hourly wage (not x1.5) for exempt employees on a salary. That’s for any hours above 40/week.

Maybe a little different on the work front because I work for government so they are bound by a different set of rules for raises. But busted my butt for 17 years, went over and above, got employee of the year award, etc. Comes time for a promotion and I’m passed over. That was the beginning of quiet quitting for me. The other big reason is the best employees and the worst employees get the exact same raises, the exact same reviews. Why put in so much effort for so little reward?

Doing the bare minimum is not good for growth. You should challenge yourself when the opportunity is presented so you can learn. The risk is with the Company. You can fail on their dime and reputation. I think there is some mutual benefit there. With that said, we need to be smart about what we spend our actual efforts on.

I think this is why some people will complete all of their tasks, and then work on something else that interests them, like a side hustle. That makes total sense. I'm not going to sit and wait around for my company to give me some interesting work!

Gen Z didn’t coin and understand ‘quiet quitting’ - Gen X did... Generation X are the ones who coined "Quiet Quitting". And who are the experts in the Art of Quiet Quitting ? Our Parents. But then again, who did our parents learn the Art of Quiet Quitting ? They learn it from their parents who are now our Grand Parents !!!! And look at what our Parents and Grandparents accomplished ? They fought 2 World Wars, Vietnam, the Cold War, Iraq and Afghanistan ... the Jet Age, Space Age, Nuclear Age ... who invented the Internet, Smart Phones, Elvis to Cobain ? Our Parents and Grandparents did . If they did all that while still " Quiet Quitting " They truely are the Greatest Generation. So if our Parents and Grandparents did just fine and if you see some 40 - 70 yr old workers Quiet Quitting too.. they turn out fine, as the Younger Generation, we should be just fine as well. ...

Guess that on the receiving (customer) end.. we just have to respect the struggle and carry on with what we're getting. And continue on somewhere else as you need. Seeing this service ceiling in the fastfood and bigbox businesses now so thus heading to the more independent places where there is nicer genuine rapport and you get better support- sometimes quality is even better. That's just me and just what I see. Systemic, sign of the times.

In today's world you can get fired for almost any reason. Say a joke that somebody gets "offended " by and your job might be gone. So with that lack of job security why go above and beyond in the workplace?? There is no reason any more to give your heart and soul to a company that will toss you like a bad poker hand for the dumbest reasons

I’m glad you addressed how some people are more productive. I dislike the @ss-in-seat mentality. I’ve automated tasks that used to take multiple people multiple days. If those individuals were working 50-60 hours/week, and I clocked out at 40, I’d still be working circles around them.

Worse, if several people are doing more work for free that's one whole job opportunity being lost. So if 4 people worked 25% less the company would have to hire another person to get the same amount of work done. This is why I'm glad I'm still paid hourly in my cyber security job. If/when I want extra hours I can usually get them, otherwise I'm clocked out right at the scheduled time. We got a whole extra 1% added to the almost yearly 3% raise. Meanwhile the company is breaking sales and profit records all over the place. We're doing the work, while the C-Suite and board are getting the money.

One problem with your argument BTB. When you get a raise, you get that raised pay every year going forward. So in your example, say you plan to work for 10 more years. Then you are not making an extra 10% for an extra 25% work. You're making 100% more but paid out over time. A proper way to analyze this situation would be to do a discounted cash flow analysis and then decide if your extra time is worth the discounted cash flow amount. Also, even if you leave, higher pay at your current employer can be leveraged into higher pay in your next job.

One problem with this is that if your employer knows you can work 25% more, they will expect it from then on, and will give you shit for not keeping that up. On top of that, if the company is looking to cut budget the people with the highest pay will be the ones they look at first since it'll save them the most money when fired/laid off

I basically was quite quitting last 8 years since I got my first job. I simply don’t think it’s worth it to put extra time into my work so that I can climb the corporate ladder. For example I spend 25% more time working for a year, but the financial return I get for that year is definitely not 25%. Additionally I have to sacrifice my physical and mental health just for that small pay increase? No thanks. Work smarter > work harder. Now I’m planning to retire within next 2 years with my other income I have been accumulating for the last several years.
