Great--I just bought a slightly expensive HDMI adapter too--a lil' north of $50. I will share my work soon here or start a channel. With this renewed Canon scene, most of our indie filmmaking will take/has taken a new meaning. I really want to thank you for popping up on YT as the messiah of Canon raw as it were! I am too old to be a fanboy of Canon but I might be going in that direction, hehe.
Hey Zeek! A quick question: is there any settings need to be done in eos m to mirror the picture to external monitor while shooting the video? The picture disappears on external monitor once I switch mode on eos m to Video (((
@@ZeekEOSZ I do. When I connect EOS to my TV im getting pretty 1080 picture with little bit of black bars, but when I use capture card it turns into 480.
@@vsevolodi.5373 Are you using the capture card I use in the video? Most likely It would be the capture card and not the cable. There's also a discussion here about it: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=community.usa.canon.com/t5/Camcorder-Discussion/XA10-HDMI-output-drops-to-480-when-capture-card-attached/td-p/311383&ved=2ahUKEwiqq9iZkIjuAhU6zjgGHQfhBy0QFjAAegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw3sUXmD2Keg6s1rbLcutdV2
1080p output with phone monitor used to work fine on the previous build Zeek, now even for me I get a black screen... I believe this black screen in 1080p is an issue with the current build - try a regular monitor with 1080p output, I think even that should be blank. EDIT: Went back to the older build and 1080p with phone monitor works like a charm.
Thanks for sharing 😎👍 Yeah, I had a feeling it could work with the older simple builds, so maybe you could have an extra SD card simply made for that. It works fine in the 1080 raw mode on the 5D2 though. Everything works on it.
I also had black screen when I enter the video mode. However when I enter photography mode everything work fine. Then I try to remove the SD. Its also got black screen. Any idea?
Link 2 phone holder.please cheers is there way to to upload setting into camera so don't have to manually enter cheers zeek you main reason I got my canon EOS M cheers bro
Hey Zeek, do you think this would work fine without ML. I'm using the EOS M as my main camera for RU-vid and would like a cheap way to be able to see myself. I'm looking to use it with the M42 mounts and a couple of cheap manual focus lenses, so would need to be able to see myself so I can get the focus right. Cheers 👍🏼
Hey, just in time! My next video will be about recording yourself with the M. This solution though would be perfect without ML. I'm still playing around with it, but it's a nice budget solution. Works well even on the 5D2 H.264.
You can as I have heard from other users. You'll need a capture card though. I haven't used it as a webcam so I'm not sure which software for webcam use will work.
Or is it the A7sii? nice to see you branching out! Picked up an A7sii myself recently, probably the only camera I love as much if not more than the EOS M. I swear it can be just as frustrating though, I feel like if you can use an EOS M you can use an a7sii. Nothing like no documentation and having to work it out for yourself aha
Haha..no the A7SII. I like the EOS M colours more and the raw is my favourite camera quality right now, but, yeah the A7SII can look good too, just takes me a bit of a while to get it to look right, especially messing around with the PP, feels a bit different to my old A7RII which I feel has slightly sharper 4K Detail.
@@ZeekEOSZ Ah that explains it. Looks pretty crisp! A7sii is definitely a more niche camera, recording externally is really the only way to go if you want to record slog as internal 4:2:0 is way too noisy to take advantage of it and be able to grade it. In that regard EOS M is actually easier for most people to get the most out of, recording straight out of camera on a7sii will be limited to rec 709 with no PP set, whereas MLV raw on the EOS M you're setting the gamma, color profile etc in post, and it's only $200.. And don't even get me started on the a7siii, you could buy 20 EOS Ms for that price aha
@@dubsteppa420 Yeah I know. I used SLog 2 here. Been trying to make LUTs for SLG2/SLG3 just to speed up the process for myself. A friend of mine got the A7SIII so she gave me the A7SII at a good price, otherwise I would have been left with the M50 😉
@@ZeekEOSZ I've just been using the Sony LUTS and they look alright as a base. And that's awesome, they seem to have gone up in price since the a7siii
I own a Panasonic Camcorder (HC-VXF990) anyone know of an android Apps that will display what my camera sees, like a monitor with HDMI cable? Thankyou!
Hahaha you must be reading my mind, I literally tried this before seeing your video exactly same app on the EOS M. Great combo, I always have struggled with the small screen and a good alternative to having the viewfinder fit to screen. Awesome combo! 😜
Thanks a lot 😎👍 The Latency is perfect! This will work for h.264 as well not only raw of course, so it's great. Works with my Sony A7SII as well like a charm.
@@NirnBootMod Yes big tablets are fine, this is an android app, I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not sure as to what apps are available there, but all android devices will be fine.
Just got a super deal on a sony phone, paid 50$ for it and it has a really nice screen, the boxy design also makes it perfect for this, I hope it works, capture card is arriving soon
Dear friend, can I ask if the SDXC SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB UHS-I U3 4K V30 170MB / s memory card is suitable for recording 2k videos? I just bought the eos M but don't know how to use it yet. I installed magic latern.
SD Card SanDisk Pro is fine, not the Adapter with the micro SD. I have a lot of ML settings video for the Eos m on my channel, this is the easier beginner versiom: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DwJuJGbBQ6bM&ved=2ahUKEwid7JGF-MLrAhU4lEsFHW1tB0AQwqsBMAx6BAgJEAM&usg=AOvVaw0N26lIaER6Sc5J58NW3EMN 1080 mode is the normal mode, it's the base for creating videos, the others are extra.
Hey Zeek, Love your videos. Is there already a ML version that supports 2+K and a realtime liveview with no forced 5x zoom ? i know i could press info button for fullscreen but then only with 2 frames/s
The link in this Video description has my latest settings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Ayz_rlniVk.html Higher resolutions need the forced zoom mode in order to crop into the sensor.
Focus peaking will have to come from the ML Menu. I don't use that, I use Oversharpen LV which makes edges appear sharper for better clarity and focus. Works great. A better 4k capture card may work better too, mine is only 2.0 1080p. Bought a 3.0, I'll test it out.
Ah gotcha. It seems like a few things don't work properly with external monitors. Have you had luck using one for anything above the 1080 modes at ~24 fps?
@@joeyvfx_official On the smartphone as a monitor, higher resolutions than 1080 work fine, like 2.5k, 2.8K RAW. 4K works fine on my Sony A7SII. Great for a quick setup monitoring solution.
Hi Zeek. first of all thank you for these informative videos. I have few questions. 1.Would this work without magic lantern also? 2. if it only works with magic lantern ,can i shoot for longer time if am not shooting in raw?
I don't have an iPhone, I'm not familiar with the appstore. Maybe you could search "USB camera":or camera monitor or stuff like that. That's how I came across this one. It would be good if the developer made the app for OS users too.
The 5D II files take longer to export. But if you like the look it gives, it's up to you. I don't think you'll enjoy messing with more raw files from an extra camera, that's just from my experience.
Hi, Zeek! Could you drop a link to the HDMI cable you use (or similar)? I want to order it on Aliexpress, but I'm afraid to make a mistake in the standards. Are there different connectors on the cable? Thanks!
I don't buy from AliExpress, I get them off eBay. I've purchased a few more to test. You need HDMI [Mini] not Micro. E.g. m.aliexpress.com/item/4001155226109.html?spm=a2g0n.productlist.0.0.4bcc413cEU96NN
@@ZeekEOSZ Gotcha. Luckily the INKEE Benbox HDMI transmitter I have started working. Except for 1080 mode, of course. Have you found a workaround for 1080 mode not working on your monitor? 1080 mode is the only mode that’s all black for me as well.
@@rizkiabadi8441 Ah right! Use 2k/2.5k/2.8 modes only. Otherwise the Older ML Builds from the ML Website should work only in 1080 mode. But not worth it imo.
Hey i was wondering, i know these capture cards don't support 120fps but can I still record on my camera 1080p 120fps and still use my phone just to see what I'm filming. Will it show the content in 30/60fps?
Any idea if I were to buy a 4k hdmi cable and a capture card that can record 4k be able to work? Just as long as the cable and capture card is capable, then the different recording resolutions would be 👍? Is it possible to just use the smartphone as a monitor, but not record on it and instead just record normally from the camera? Would be nice to just use the smartphone as if it were an articulating screen, and that's it, so as to avoid any possible issues the capture card and/or cable may cause. As always, thank you very much!
There's no 4K raw option, so that won't work,. Max is 2.8/3K or 5K in Timelapse. To use the smartphone as just a monitor is difficult as the Eos m screen goes blank sometimes and when you press the record button it will show on the monitor. 😎👍
@@ZeekEOSZ Gotchya. Thanks. Basically, any capture card with this method will allow to be able to connect the camera to a computer and use it as a webcam, aye?
I've never tried webcam before, but any capture card should work whether 1080/4K. Id do a bit of research seeing if anybody else has used their m cameras as webcams.
Awesome find! Def will test this out! :) So 1080 modes will have problems with hdmi output in general? Would be too bad as i wanted to use a monitor in that mode soon. And i have another problem: I want to record 1080 and 1080 3x crop with 12 bit lossless instead of 14 bit lossless in order to save some storage and prevent stops, is it possible on newest Danne build? I see the 10 and 12 bit setting but it doesn't seem to do anything and :( thanks zeek!
Some people have had no issues with 1080 raw. 1080 3x crop works, just not 1080 with my Capture card if that's where the issue lies. It only cost me $10-15. 10/12 bit are available. Disabling those will automatically leave 14 bit.
Doesn’t work on iOS, unfortunately. You need a special capture card with proprietary companion app (over 300 bucks, from a single person enterprise, so longterm value highly uncertain).
Hi Zeek, I followed your steps. But I get no video output on liveview. But I do get video output when I am on Menu mode or when I'm on preview mode when looking back on my raw footages. I am using ML on EOS M2. Thanks.
Can this method works on a hard drive? Like instead of using a phone, the video capture card will be plugged directly to a hard drive or a storage where it has GB memory to it like sd card or something. In that way the video or files that you’ve recorded will be saved to the device like hard drive or sd card that i mentioned. Please respond thanks!
Great vid sir!! I have a couple questions: 1. Is there an app for iPhone? I’m not seeing this one in the App Store and a google search is not yielding any results. 2. If I must get an android phone to do this, I would be looking for the absolute cheapest option that would run the app you used in this vid. Any recommendations on which android device to get?
1. Unfortunately not for iso. It should be though I reckon. 2. Possibly the Samsung Galaxy S5 or other cheap galaxy models or Google Pixel 1st/2nd Gen.
Hey zeek I know this is kinda irrelevant to the video but I was just wondering if the 7artisans 35mm is good for the original EOS M at 1080p raw, I am trying to shoot some nice cinematic footage
Never tried it. Unfortunately the output is max 1080p so the quality may not be the best if it works. You're better off getting a budget 4K display monitor like the Eyoyo 13.3" 4K Display or something similar.
Im using my smartphone with Eos M for 2.5k 14bits and is perfect, the SD is Extreme PRO 170 mb/s 128GB, but when I use this external monitot the RAW file is with pink... why? and when disconnect the monitor save the raw file perfect, without pink frames, you know why? thank you! :)
The pink frames aren't from the smartphone/monitor, it happens when the camera performs under pressure, it drops a frame/pink. Enabling 10bit should help with that I believe.
@@ZeekEOSZ Yes, the work of export image by hdmi is more processor work and more processor work more pink frames possibles... Im going from one 5d II and for you now i buy one Eos M + 18-55mm for 100 Euros in perfect condition!! The 2.5k its awesome incredible. Thank you for your work ;)
Now I have a problem again. I want to use the mobile phone monitor, but I switch the camera camera mode and it will display it. When I switch the video mode, I can't display the black screen.
This is the latest build, black screen is fixed: bitbucket.org/Dannephoto/magic-lantern_jip_hop_git/downloads/crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd_raw_only_2021Jun26.EOSM202.zip
Note for newbies: The problem with using any monitor that isn't meant to be used as camera monitor is that they often aren't neutral in color calibration. For example a Samsung phone is usually extremely overly vivid in color calibration so if you forget that you might assume what you're seeing is what the camera would be taking, which isn't the actual case.
