I honestly hate that most characters have sped up or very shortened taunts. Peach and Bayonetta especially. You could already cancel Bayonetta’s in Smash Wii U/3DS. Why not make everyone able to? It really makes some characters look weird or awkward.

I think Smash 4 taunts are better due to the fact that they are slower and don’t go as fast as Ultimate’s taunts. Also Bayonetta literally keeps talking after her taunt in Ultimate which is funny. But they are both still great games!

The biggest downside in smash ultimate

Almost everyone from Smash4 got tweaks to their model to make them look better and more fitting for Ultimate... ...except for Cloud. He looks like a straight-up port.

Here are the things I've noticed: (Long comment ahead!) Mario- First two taunts are different. Third taunt has a sped up animation. Luigi- Luigi's last expression in the first taunt has him look more scared than before. Peach- Taunt's animations are faster. Third taunt has a shorter animation. Bowser- Bowser's second taunt's animation is shorter. Yoshi- Not much difference. I think the animations are faster, and the voice clips are clearer (just like the other taunts). Rosalina- Spins twice instead of thrice in the first taunt. Added sound effect in third taunt. Bowser Jr. and koopalings- Faster animation. Wario- First taunt has a star effect next to Wario's jaw. Third taunt is much faster. Donkey Kong- First and second taunt have a shorter and altered animation. Diddy Kong- Not much difference. I think the animations faster. Mr. Game & Watch- Not much difference. Seems like the animations have been sped up slightly. Little Mac- Not much difference in the first two taunts, but the third taunt's definitely faster. Link- First taunt has a shorter animation. Second taunt is different. Link's pose is slightly differen in the third taunt. Zelda- All three taunts are completely new. Sound effects are re-used, and voice clips added to the new taunts. Sheik- First taunt has a shorter animation. Third taunt uses a different voice clip. Ganondorf- Taunts are similar, but the animations are shorter, and Ganondorf has a different voice. Toon Link- First and third taunts are shorter. Toon Link faces the camera in the first taunt. Samus- Faster animations. Zero Suit Samus- Faster animations. ZSS doesn't spin as much in the third taunt. Pit- Faster animations for all taunts. Pit doesn't spin his sword as much in the first taunt. Palutena- Faster animations. Marth- Has English voice clips now. Ike- Faster animations and different voice clips. Robin- Faster animations. Duck Hunt- Not much difference. Kirby- First taunt is much shorter. Second taunt is faster. Dedede- All taunts have faster animations. First taunt's sound effects have been tweaked a bit. Meta Knight- Faster animations. Fox- Faster animations. Fox's voice is different and better. Falco- Faster animations, difference voice clips are used. (I wonder if SSBU has a different voice director?) Pikachu- Faster and shorter animations. Pikachu's voice clip in the second taunt sounds likes it has been cut short. Charizard- Taunts are totally different. Lucario- Taunts are faster. First taunt has more aura coming out of Lucario's body. Jigglypuff- Second taunt's animation is shorter. Third taunt has a different sound effect. Greninja- Not much difference, but Greninja closes his eyes in the third taunt. R.O.B.- Faster animations. Raises arm in the first taunt, and lowers arms slightly in the second taunt. Ness- Hides the bat in his back instead of his pocket in the second taunt. Captain Falcon- Flame effect is different in the first taunt. Second taunt's animation is shorter. CF moves his mouth in the third taunt. Villager- Raises arms twice instead of three times in the first taunt. Dance is shorter in the second taunt. Third taunt's animation is faster. Olimar and Alph- Hops twice instead of three times in the first taunt. Wii Fit Trainer- Faster animation. New voice clips. Shulk- Faster animations. Dr. Mario- Faster animations. Dark Pit- Faster animations. Lucina- Faster animations. Pac-Man- Uses different sprites in the first and third taunt. Turns around only twice in the second taunt. Mega Man- Faster animations. Sonic- Faster animations. Mewtwo- Faster animations. Mewtwo's voice in the first taunt seems to be shorter. Psychic aura effects are different. Lucas- Faster animations. Roy- Faster animations. Has English voice clips. Ryu- Faster animations. Doesn't turn around in the first taunt. Cloud- Faster animations. Corrin- Faster animations. Bayonetta- Much shorter animations in all three taunts. Voice clips are also sped up slightly. Mii Gunner- Doesn't smile anymore in the first taunt. Mii Swordfighter- Faster animations. Mii Brawler- Faster animations.

Shame they shortened some of taunts, bayo and peach were hit hard. But the greatest tragedy is mewtwo. That final 180 slow turn with his arms crossed as he’s laughing right at you really ground in you were out playing someone.

Why do the taunts in ultimate feel rushed?

So they made taunting worse by removing much of what made them unique; Peach's Spin, Bowser's Anger (Side-B), and even the Kirby Dance. Whatever happened to just minor updates or don't touch it?

Interesting how they removed Mario’s old mushroom taunt and replaced his cap taunt with a Cappy toss. I think those were both great choices.

Did anyone notice? The Koopalings now use wands instead of stone hammers - the same colored wands they have in Paper Mario: Color Splash, in fact! Their colors are based on what Big Paint Star they were after - Morton: red, Iggy: yellow, Ludwig: blue, Wendy: purple, Larry: orange, Lemmy: green...Though, Roy's is a different case. He was the vanguard of Black Bowser's Castle, so his wand is black.

Some of the taunts seem faster.

For the curious, Pac-Man's taunts are: (some Namco taiko drum game), Mappy, Galaga, Metro-Cross, Dragon Buster, Libble Rabble (a puzzle game), Tekken, King & Balloon.

Even though Ultimate has a lot more refinement (just look at those flowers dancing in the background!)...I really find its ambient lighting system way too harsh. Wii U's characters have a lot more color contrast...and also don't blind my retinas. Then, there's the taunt shortening. Some of them desperately needed it, but it also kind of takes away kind of the charm. You can cancel taunts in Ultimate...so I think they really went too far. (RIP Bayonetta.) Ultimate is pretty much better in every other regard, though.

Little details such as the Koopalings having their wands in their respective colours makes me smile :)
