"Smash" Star Megan Hilty Channels Marilyn Monroe with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"

As Smash's Ivy Lynn, Megan Hilty has spent months vying for the coveted role of Marilyn Monroe in the fictional musical Bombshell, and while we may not know how it plays out for Ms. Lynn, in the current Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Hilty proves she's just the woman for the job! I simply ADORE Megan, way before Smash and even more now. She is a perfect Marilyn :) However we can't compare anyone to Miss. Monroe, she was unique, she will always be one of a kind. But Megan, sweet sweet Megan I'm so proud of being your fan, you are a star *-* love

How great it is to have this memory of Megan Hilty's great performance as Lorelie Lee. I wish they had done a first class video of the entire production. I had not idea of what a strong book that the show has.

Who wrote the downbar? How idiotic to say that "Megan eclipses Monroe". Megan is awesome and does a wonderful job putting her own stamp on the part. Monroe is Monroe, and will always be. She is so deeply symbolic of the idea of femininity for the western world that she is beyond comparison or questioning. And that's that. Megan would be the first to agree.

Amazing. I'm very happy to see they went with a style similar Carol's dress as opposed to Marilyn's. Carol and Marilyn are my top two actresses, and Megan fillinf in both their shoes and still being original and marvelous has for sure put her in the top five, just behind Jean Harlow and Julie Andrews. Please watch this everyone: Carol Channing sings on 1953 TV (Two songs from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") It shows how Megan was original without tarnishing it, and also how great Carol is. :P

I enjoy all 3 great ladies as Lorelei, and I agree with what you said here. I'd also like to add that any great actor knows the responsibility is to the text/music. No matter who originated a role or how iconic they were, an actor is bringing a character to life not impersonating another actor.

Megan Hilty continues to impress me everytime I see her.. I saw her on Broadway..I'm wathing her on Smash..and now this..She is Today's Star..Talented, Beautiful...and during all interviews she continues to be funny and humble.. She is just a treasure who wasn't just an over night success..She has also paid her dues.. in sweat, blood and tears with her training all through her life.. Good for You Megan... We got tiks to this MONTHS ago before there was a cast. We just love the movie and wanted to see the difference between the movie and the musical. WHAT A TREAT!! Megan Hilty was superbly hilarious. I had a smile on my face the entire time. This is one encores! production I wish they would bring to mainstream broadway and keep Hilty as the lead. If only so I can see it as many times I want.

She was ! In the dying seen in the musical she was speechless !! I think Megan Hilty is an amazing performers and she yes have Broadway background... But what they need for Marilyn is wonderment in front of everybody's famous , that innocence when people is amazed by her ... People need to watch Katharine's Idol audition and then watch some Marilyn movie's and stop just talking about freaking Broadway belting cause' it's sound great but it's not the only thing that sound great ...

Then the title and description shouldn't be going on about how she is channeling Marilyn. It's confusing and of course people will comment like that if they don't know Carol Channing originated the role or about the character she is doing. Regardless thank you for explaining that, it makes more sense now.

Certainly not there's no comparison.She sounds like nearly every musical theatre chick and she is just belting not connecting with her character.Marilyn Monroe is Marilyn no one sounds or looks like her/has ever come close to her popularity or global appeal and influence pre social media and internet.

Absolutely ... you know Katharine McPhee would be great for Marilyn because of her town of voice her shy sensuality . Katherine is Norma Jean . The shy little girl desperate to be good , to impress , to be a star , to be love . Marilyn Monroe herself says it : When I'm in my room , when I'm on the set I'm Norma Jean , Marilyn only exist on film . The confident and sexy women we see on film is nothing to compare with the lost girl we see off camera . It's what that Musical should be about .

Regardless of who performed this before Megan, she is fantastic. A true example of theatrical talent, and how it is often underrated. I love the color and range of her voice. Sweet but strong and so effortless. As far as Hilty and McPhee, I'll keep my comment brief. This video is about Hilty's BROADWAY CAREER and NOT SMASH. Their voices are very different. Which underlines the quintessential difference between theatre and mainstream singers. They shouldn't and can't be compared.

If Ivy wants to be a star and star as a famous Hollywood icon, maybe next season in Smash they should do a production on Judy Garland's life, and Ivy could be cast as Judy. Yes, I know Karen sounded lovely singing "Over the Rainbow" in the first episode of Season 1, but I don't think she'd sound great trying to belt out notes in a song like "The Man That Got Away" as Ivy definitely would. Of course, it's just my opinion.

Please remember that she is NOT playing Marilyn Monroe but Lorelei. Carole Channing played the role on Broadway. Marilyn played it in the movie. I think Megan's rendition more closely resembles Carole's. BTW, I love each of them. As far as "Smash" is concerned, I really wanted Karen for the role....because I am so sentimental :>)

Have you seen ALL the women who have ever played this role, from Carol Channing in the original Broadway production in 1948 on up through all the countless regional and amateur productions done every year? But this version's much truer to the original show (tho' Ms. Hilty's vocals are "prettier" than Carol Channing's also rousing, character-filled ones), a semi-staged concert version of which Megan's performing in here. She's marvelous! I also love Marilyn M.'s distinctive rendition; hers was a fairly limited, but sweet & charming singing voice & style. But the role of Lorelei Lee wasn't written for her--she had barely been seen on screens when the musical was written.

Marilyn Monroe wasn't as big as most people think she was. Converting sizes those days to ours would make her a two or a three in terms of clothing. McPhee isn't really all of that off.

Even if I still think the one who will take that lead should sound like Marilyn .To me the problem isn't her voice or her talent ... she just not reflect Marilyn even when she talk and act like her ... Megan is a huge ball of talent I won't ever deny this . She's a Broadway goddess ... but she didn't have that thing that innocence ... Again in my opinion ... I'm not quite sure that Katharine is the one either but she reflect Marilyn a little bit more to my eyes .

No. Lorelei is a showgirl. Well, actually, in the original musical and book, Lorelei's occupation is unidentified, but it's assumed she's a showgirl by 'Diamonds' and 'Maime is Mimi'. It's about a dumb, blonde, gold-digger in the 20's that's sent on cruise to France by her 'sugar daddy' with her best friend Dorothy. They get into all kinds of shenanigans and mischief.

But when you're on Broadway, you need that. She's not always going to sound like Marilyn, because it would be impossible to portray that out to an audience. You HAVE to be loud. McPhee didn't even sound anything like Marilyn. Megan does one hell of an imitation, but she brings the power that's necessary for Broadway as well.

Broadway.com you should be ashamed of yourself! She is not channeling Marily at all....nor the originator of the role, Carole Channing. She is totally putting her own unique stamp on it. Other than the blond hair and the figure, I don't eve see a drop of Marilyn (or Carole) in this. Which is just as it should be!

hate? How is that hate? This is theatre hunny, it is about being realistic and portraying a role. If someone does not have the body type for a role, they don't get cast. This is reality. Go ask anyone who has ever auditioned for a show on Broadway.. If you are too short they won't see you, too tall they won't see you. This is not the school playground....

Um, she's not channeling Marilyn Monroe. She's channeling Carol Channing. Monroe didn't win a single award for her portrayal. Channing won a Tony -- AND originated the role. You would think a site dedicated to Broadway would realize that.

She's playing the role. Although she can use Marilyn as a basis for some things, it's better for her to be true to the role rather than one of the actresses that played it.
