Smash Ultimate Costume Origins - Sephiroth & Mii Fighters

Um...yeah, need to correct you on the wing. That first appeared in the international version of Kingdom Hearts when he was added as an optional boss. The wing was later added in the original release of Advent Children as a nod to that game. Also in all other costumes other than 1P and 7P, the color of his Masamune's hilt changes red. This is actually what the Masamune looked like in the original FFVII.

All of his color can be references of all super weapons: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond.

Sephiroth's "Sliver" skin just looks like his normal black that's been faded from the sun

The red pants on his alt shirtless skin is probably a reference to when he gets defeated in the final fight with Cloud where he gets all bloody in his final moments, yeah kind of dark to think of but is the only thing to comes to mind when seeing him shirtless and red at the same time.

Shirtless *Sepireyith* is probably one of the most sexiest and chadiest costume in Smash history

The green, red, and silver alts could also reference Jenova Birth, Life, and Death

Man, it’s still so crazy that *SEPHIRIATH* is finally in Smash Ultimate

Just wanted to say, Cloud's alts should have been his blue SOLDIER grunt uniform, dress, and Zack.

Let's face it, no one's really surprised by Areth's death anymore. You have to be living under a rock to be shocked by it.

Additional note; The Chocobo Hat is based on the specific stylization of Chocobo in the Chocobo side series.

Small correction. Advent Children might be his most famous 'One Wing' design, but the first time he ever had the One Wing was actually 3 years before Advent Children in 2002, during Kingdom Hearts. The wing's shape, however, has some stylistic differences and had some shades of blue in the feathers. Also, the costumes are purplish, green, reddish, blue and silver, right? You already mentioned a couple of these, but these may very well be Ultima Weapon, Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon, Sapphire Weapon and Diamond Weapon, respectively. I feel that if one is a reference to a weapon, they likely all are, especially as they all fit. Also, for those who don't know, in the later versions of FF7 where Diamond Weapon is a boss, Sapphire Weapon remains a cutscene only entity, who dies during its assault on Junon. A cannon shoots into its open mouth and blows its head off.

Fun fact about sephiroths one wing: him having one physical wing on his body first started in the Kingdom Hesrts series as Advent Children released after KH1. So the fact that Sephiroth summons a single wing as a power up became a thing due to his appearance in KH1, funny how his appearance in a SE developed Disney game has permanently impacted his appearance in FF7 related titles.

Even before Advent Children, he had that wing in Kingdom Hearts.

The wing (outside of Safer form) actually originates from Kingdom Hearts 1, which gave Cloud and Sephiroth matching black wings. Cloud had his on his left, Sephiroth on the right, as in KH, they are hinted to be two halves of one whole. Advent Children then included this part of Sephiroth's design, making the wing more realistic in the process, and from there it stuck.

Hey Aaronitmar, I have an idea for a series you could do: Smash Ultimate Neutral Special Origins Usually when I think of a character’s Special Moveset, I always think of him using his Neutral Special, so it’d be pretty fun to see the origins as to how they’re able to use these moves in their home series.

I like Seph's blue alt cause it makes him look like Vergil from DMC

I think the Green Alt is absolutely based on the Midgar Zolom because not only is the color scheme very similar, even with the slightly yellowish shoulder pads similar to the underbelly of the Zolom, but there's also an iconic cutscene where you see a giant dead Midgar Zolom that was killed by Sephiroth, which shows his power because that enemy likely killed the player several times and then you get to see how Sephiroth killed it brutally and with ease. So that connection with Sephiroth is there.

His Winged design first appears in KH in 03, Advent was released in 05.

*So even though it would be impossible* , what kind of trailer would you imagine Geno having if he was literally the next character after Sephiroth. I could imagine it continuing from Sephiroth’s trailer, Cloud has been bested by Sephiroth who is preparing to finish off Cloud. However, a beam blasts Sephiroth away, even breaking his sword, a whirl of energy flies at Sephiroth blowing him up or obliterating his legs which one’s allowed, the other Smash fighters look up to see that Geno was the one who dealt such blows to the one winged angel. Cue character announcement screen and gameplay. Sephiroth has taken a such harsh blows, and is attempting to crawl towards Geno who promptly uses Geno Beam, finishing him off.

People being upset about Geno not becoming an actual fighter, meanwhile I’m thinking eh this was expected. I mean heck some indie game characters have been more relevant than Geno ever was in games other than Smash. While I do appreciate Sakurai trying, and I respect the man for the effort he and his team put into making these characters translate into SSB. I just never saw Nintendo going along with making Geno an actual fighter. I am glad though that Geno still at least gets to be a mii fighter again.

few things noted: Sephiroth's main costumes are based on either the Jenova forms, or Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Emerald weapon. the2nd shirtless costume just shares the red costume refrence. For the Barret mii costume. the spirit battle that uses it also has a refrence to the other members of Avalanche, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie. The 3 are also often reoccuring characters in the FF series. the Chocobo hat's design is exclusively based on the form used for the mascot. which appears in numerous spinoff titles.

I know I'm a little late to this but Sephiroths wing was in Kingdom Hearts a full 3 years before Advent Children, so that was more of a spin-off being an influence on the source materials future installments.

7:10 You forgot to mention that the design for the hat specifically comes from the Chocobo spinoff games including Chocobo Racing and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon which recently got a remake for Switch, Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: EVERY BUDDY! (with a logo that looks suspiciously similar to the DanMachi logo)

I enjoy Sephiroth as a fighter. My favorite color is his green alt. You bring up a fair point about his skins being too dark, but I'd say that they're better than Cloud's by a decent shot.

Sephiroth's design is based from his Advent Children design (which is the FF7 one but with the buttons on the coat. He has a slightly different design to FF7R and Dissidia)

I can’t remember if it’s all of Sephiroth’s skins that do this but the wrap on the handle of Masamune also changes color per skin I think. I know it does the last two.

Im sure someone else has already put this here but the alt colors of Sephiroth's coat is most likely a reference to the different Weapon bosses from FFvii if anything. Ruby Weapon is red, Sapphire is Blue (tho you never fight it), Emerald is Green and both diamond and Ultima Weapons are a silverish white color

I feel like Geno is one of those characters who is cooler if you played SMRPG as a kid, because he's basically just there. You could take him out of the game and basically nothing would change, other then the section where you find him.

No Sephiroth’s single black wing first appeared in KH1. It was after KH1 that this became a staple for his design

You know, the more I really think about it, I think it was best for Geno not to be in the roster. Honestly, in my opinion, he wouldn't have a lot of movesets that fit entirely comparing to the rest of the fighters.

Honestly, I'm glad you were able to find solid references to the colors, since because they were muted colors, I thought they were just the smash original colors, along with two two bonus costumes which were the shirtless ones. I still think they look good though. I'm also happy we got Cloud's party members as Mii fighters! I was only expecting Barrett and Tifa, so I'm glad we got Aerith too. As for Geno, I'm glad he's a Mii fighter. Don't think he deserved a spot, but hopefully we still have some hope for Sora. Overall, Sephiroth is a pretty cool character.
