No disrespect to Jeff, but the way James plays - with that half second strum lag - just makes it sound right - nice and dreamy. Jeff plays right in sync with Billy and while sounding louder and fuller, doesn't have the original vibe of Siamese Dream.
+Iam Lion You gotta remember that Jeff and James are from two different eras. Even technologically, the music writing and playing are different. James also co-wrote this song (even though there's some issue as to what really happened), so I'm sure it hits him harder playing it than Jeff.
+rockMelloncollie was just talking about that with my buddy. we were saying he is stretching for notes and hitting them and sounds sharper than we have heard him sound in a long time. Really great.
Imagine if at 1:27 the distorted guitars kicked in and all the house lights lit up and out emerged D'arcy with the bass and Jimmy started playing the drums, as if to say we're back!
+Manchos Castano No reason for them to go on any final world tours. I just saw the Pumpkins three times in three days, and they're absolutely killing it right now. It's a hell of a show. Billy, Jimmy, and Jeff are outstanding. James joining them was amazing. They're at their peak since returning. I hope we get at least another 10 years of Pumpkins with those three members.
+Brian Robertson Yeah, most people don't realize that Billy & Jimmy are smashing pumpkins. The albums feature Billy on every instrument except Drums as Jimmy is a better drummer than Billy. James Iha, and Darcy were basically just hired guns. Billy didn't allow them to play on the albums. He's a definite control freak, but the material shows his tenacity in that it's so sonically beautiful and precise.
+Kevin Williams It is true that Billy and JImmy laid down almost all the recorded stuff on SD..but you arent giving James enough credit for Gish and MCIS..any time you hear an Ebow, thats James..He also does alot of the lead fills during verses... While BIlly was the major player, one only need look at the albums post James and Darcy to understand how the contributed to the band.. Darcy on the other hand, was a bit of a hired gun, just from an outsider perspective. But so much more goes into an amazing album or band than just, who wrote what, and who played what. Ideas are bounced off each other and it is from the chemistry of the three or four unique individuals that gives rise to the masterpiece..Would If you could go back in history and give Billy a new guitarist, or bassist, I would argue that you would not have a Gish, or Siamese Dream, or Mellon Collie today.. I'm a huge fan of SP, even have an Adore tattoo lol.
D'Arcy was definitely part of the band's vibe though. It's not the same without her. And as mcallen said, you need to give James more credit for songs like Mayonaise and Soma, along with MCIS and Gish. You've got to admit that the band's vibe is different now that they lost D'Arcy and James.
+Jeremy Hoffman No Jimmy :( .. i saw them in 95 and I saw them in 2006 and both shows were amazing. But Without Jimmy on them drums....Not the true Pumpkin sound. Still love the video though :)
I thought James wanted nothing to do with BIlly ever again..this warms my heart..If they would do one show with james, darcy, and jimmy, id fly anywhere to see it.
This was inevitable as soon as BC said he wanted to "repair" his relationships with past band members. He put some shit hot bands together in the past 15 years tho.
What a beautiful thing to see. I was in Madison WI when they were recording GISH. Was lucky enough to be in college from 91-94. As soon as James starts playing the Smashing Pumpkins sound ignites... I heard Dave Grohl is going to play bass on the next Smashing Pumpkins album/reunion... Darcy is servicing horses.
+Hazy Sativa Darcy, unfortunately got herself into a bit of a coke problem, and made some questionable surgery choices in the process...I hope shes doing well.
mcallen bell Yeah its too bad she's such a mess, she was pretty hot back in the early 90s. No idea what she was trying to fix with all the plastic surgery.
+haschengrube x Me too. Reminds me of when I'd wake up early in the morning, get ready for school and I'd be listening to Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie songs around 1997-2000 or so. God dammit.
It does take me back to high school, 10th grade I believe. I loved this Siamese Dream back then, but I must admit it was lost on me. It was superficial as I hadn't experienced enough of life to really understand the lyrics. Listening to it now, is a completely different experience. At the time, I would have called it a grunge record as SP got lumped in with the Seattle bands, even though they were from The City of Wind, not rain. In listening now, I find it to be much more of a Prog Rock sound... in the same vein (pardon the pun) as Pink Floyd.
i was there and i couldn't believe my shit. i don't see james as essential to my enjoyment but man, this made me happier than i would have expected. old friends.
+Nickolas Macheras -- There's an undeniable energy that James and Jimmy bring to the Smashing Pumpkins. It's William's baby, but Jimmy and James helped nurture and raise it.
I really hope they get the original lineup. I would love to see them for the first time and have it be the original members. Please universe, make this happen!!!
This is beyond amazing, takes me right back to my childhood years, being a confused teenager, listening to my favorite songs. Smashing Pumpkins will forever hold that place near and dear. Original guitarist James Iha joined Billy on stage for some tracks off Siamese Dream last night. Just happened to be James' birthday too! How incredibly awesome. They are playing again in Cali tonight. I wonder if James will be there?
I agree the with comments posted,i got chills when i first saw this video Pumpkins one of my favorite bands growing up in the 1990's.love the unplugged version of Mayonise wish Billy and James would do a world tour like this or release an acoustic album of Pumpkins classics!
Whoah that's amazing ! I had this song stuck in my head on the weekend ! I must have been picking up the vibes from halfway across the world when they were playing it !!!
So aweesooomeee ! This made my day better, happy easter by the way, one of my favorite songs by the smashing pumpkins, and so happy to see them together again
The thumb down people have to be someone whom dont hear and see magic in this version...this is one of those songs that i want played at my funeral and sums up my life..thanks billy and james you are special
Nostalgia tears running down my cheecks! I have this 'vieuphoria' dvd where they play an acoustic version of Mayonaise in a park. All smiling and laughing and enjoying themselves. No rockstar stuff. Just four talented kids playing music. That picture of them will always be what the smashing pumpkins are to me. It's a shame that D'arcy has become what she is now, but still very happy to see Jimmy and James back.
can't believe it. started practicing the song last week and was full of melancholic memories of the 90s. and here they are united again. i could cry :..)
Their chemistry is one of a kind. Seeing them side by side is like a dream. This is real though. SP Forever! D'Arcy...we're waiting for you! Make it happen!
"Someday we'll wave hello and wish we'd never waved goodbye.." This Time From the Machina Album Rewatching this again. Really hoping for the rumored 2018 reunion.
Also, it's amazing how much BIlly's live voice has improved since the Mellon Collie days..it used to be so bad, idk if he took vocal lessons or just started caring, or if he was just touring too much in 1996, but it was almost spoken word at some points.
you know you sometimes hate people for putting up their gadgets while at the concert, but you have to thank them at the same time for the benefit of others who couldn't be there. so, thank you sir.
Great video, I really appreciate you uploading this, so happy to see them play together again. Now get Jimmy in the mix (already playing with Billy again) and a magic vortex to the 90's will open and the world will be fixed!
