Smashing through the gears - Shifting a 9 speed Eaton Fuller

The Eaton Fuller 9 speed in this truck is almost overkill, Hino motors have such a wide and useful power band that a syncro 6 speed is usually good enough, but hey - more gears are better! And no it's not a tutorial or how-to, this is just me showing off.

I don't care what it redlines at, you were shifting at too high rpm, redline is irrelevant, you shouldn't be anywhere near redline

When you pull up to a stop sign and don't want to engage the clutch break or pull the truck out of gear what do you do? Is there a position on the clutch that is a dead space area?
@peerless-d6r600
@peerless-d6r600 6 лет назад
the clutch brake is just the furthest position you can depress the pedal.its all the way to the firewall and you have to engage the clutch brake from a stopped position to slow the gears enough to be able to shift.

Nice smooth shifting. Gearbox seems a lot tighter than I'm used to - we have 3 trucks with Eaton Fuller 9-speeds and I like them a lot. I notice you range up when the stick is still in the '4' position, whereas I was always taught to range up while the stick is in N in between 4 and 5, as one motion. Obviously either way works but I feel kind of dumb for not knowing you could range up while still in gear.
@WestCoastWheelman
@WestCoastWheelman 9 лет назад
Yeah, back in the day I was taught to "pre-load" the range selector much like pre-loading some pressure on the stick before breaking torque, and I was specifically instructed NOT no change range in neutral. Don't know why it would be bad that way, but pre-loading definitely makes things faster. And the reason the shifter in this truck has such tight short throws is because it's a cab-over and the stick doesn't go right down into the tranny - there's a big long stupid 4 or 5 dog-leg series of linkages to hook everything up, which is the absolute bane of my existence if it ever goes outta line. It's finicky to set up when building a truck, but done right it works great. I've driven a few cab-overs with such bad shifter linkages that the stick hit the dash. Another quirk is the truck HAS to be in N to tilt up the cab or the shit breaks. Sometimes a pain in the ass, but I still love my Hinos! Thanks for watching, thanks for the comment, and drive safe!

From what I have seen on these RU-vid videos it looks like there are two ways to shift gears on one these large truck transmissions. One method is the manufacturers recommended method with all the double clutching, the other method is the way truck drivers actually shift these transmissions in the real world, only using the clutch for starting and stopping.
@tommywallbanger
@tommywallbanger 2 года назад
I just got out of CDL school and I have double clutching down but I just started floating the gears a couple days ago. Sometimes I will clutch just once to get it into neutral and then drop it into gear while I'm letting off. A buddy of mine got a job and his boss told him "I don't ever want to see you double clutch any of my trucks. You either know how to shift or you don't." He said the mechanic will freak out too because of all the wear and tear double clutching puts on the parts. I guess the shift fork wears out and maybe the throw out bearing. It seems like guys float them pretty soon into it as all that foot work must get old quick.
@WestCoastWheelman
@WestCoastWheelman 2 года назад
If we actually double clutched we'd all be walking around asymmetrical like arm wrestling champs except it'd be one gigantic left leg. Try pulling heavy loads and having to actually use almost all 18 gears in city traffic 😂

While driving in high range and then coast to a complete stop. Are you able to go back into first gear then shift into down range then press the clutch reset button? Also how often do you stay in eighth gear and then down shift into low range and carry on in fourth? Is that just a process of stepping off the accelerator and then stepping on again.
@WestCoastWheelman
@WestCoastWheelman 9 лет назад
If I'm braking late and coming to a complete stop instead of rolling through like I normally try to do, those times I'll only shift down to 5 and dump it into N from there. The important part to remember is to always pre-load the range selector before moving the stick when the truck is moving (not sure of the mechanical principle behind it but it's the difference between a clean "click" and a nasty "crunch" on the gears) and to never be in low range over about 40-45km/h, even in neutral. To get moving again from idling in N, the process goes: step on the clutch, use clutch brake to stop the insides of the transmission from spinning (as they were just at motor speed in N), then put it in gear and feather the clutch to get moving. And yes, the entire process of shifting a transmission like this, whether up the gears of down, if you double clutch or if you float without the clutch (like me) - all of it is done with fine throttle control and perfectly timed shifter movements, using the speed of the motor to match gear speeds so they mesh properly.
@SPTSuperSprinter156
@SPTSuperSprinter156 7 лет назад
do you do the same in a car? I drove a really old car for a while that had such a worn synchromesh on first that when rolling up to a stop and re-engaging 1st you pretty much had to rev-match to get it back into first. I got quite good at it and eventually around half of my shifts back into first were so "clean" that it felt even better than the usual declutch and shift. I imagine, like every shift in this video. I have a newer car now, but the habit carries on nonetheless and I hear it's good for saving on synchro wear.

No noises or evident clutch judder or slip .. Then after a few flicks of the range switch up and down and it works. I like the splitter shifts but this is bugging me. Hinos have a good engine, as you say a large powerband, my old truck was a hino and you could float through the gears whether shifting in the green or if you needed to, reving it right out, new truck is a ud, and the throttle is not responsive at all, unless i take 3 sec to shift (unload, neutral, bring revs down slowly, shift into gear, accelerate) its always a double clutch job... For the life of me i cant get the throttle to listen to what i want like i could the hino... The new truck is not my friend like the hino was, we could work together, whereas the ud wants me to drive like a noob and just shift rough, its not nice. Haha

@@loosemindswallridemedia2013 man it took me 5yrs and finally getting in a truck with someone who actually knew how to drive a 9 speed split Eaton! He learned in TDCJ! Drove for the prison! How about that? Well after watching me clutch drive for 5mins he said watch this he literally put his hand over mine on the shifter and just told me to loosen up my hand while he worked the gears. Sounds like a prison gay story I know! But wow after about two hours of just having him run the gears I figured it out! Clutch shifting is terrible and wastes clutches! Just run it to the sweet spot and bam knock it in! All the way up to the split hit the split then run it the rest of the way up and back down! And I know the gear box hasn't suffered been 3yrs now and he's still running that same truck every day! So these guys poo pooing no clutch just don't get it! It's soooo much easier!

Multiple gears is NEVER overkill. The reason they have these transmissions these days is to save fuel. You will not need to rev your engine as high before shifting. Read the owners manual. My truck runs at 1500 RPM all day. We do not rev it past 1600 RPM to shift. Progressive shifting saves your engine and fuel. Do not rev it past what your owner manual says and your engine will last much longer, while saving fuel.
@dl7694

Doug Stern I definitely understand where you are coming from but if you are running around in the Rockies with a fully loaded box sometimes you have to hold a gear to climb. I would gladly trade the 10 speed for a 13 though.
@SternDrive
@SternDrive 6 лет назад
I have run many 13 speed transmissions, but I prefer a 15 speed. They are kind of rare, and nobody knows how to shift them, but I like them because they are close ratio, and every shift is an identical RPM split.
@SternDrive
@SternDrive 5 лет назад
@@tommyw.9424 The gear RPM split is a bit smaller in a 15 speed, and each shift is an identical split, unlike a 13 which is wide in low range and narrow in high. Give me a 15 any day but very few know how to drive them properly and they are now quite rare. Too bad.
