Smaug is secure in his strength, so he talks to his victims while making near-misses as he does with Bilbo. His attack on Lake-town shows that he's very capable of killing large numbers of people. Imagine now, if you will, what sort of disaster Smaug might have inflicted on Rohan and Gondor?
Well considering smaug is very intelligent he was more curious about what Bilbo is then following his killing instincts. Dragons in Tolkien's lore are manipulated and new formed souls. Who knows what pride slug smaug was before he became a dragon. Also smaugs very sadistic character explains by itself, why he spared Bilbo's life so Bilbo can see him destroying lake town
specially as unlike a lot of villains ...he knows exactly what the effects of the stone is ,and perhaps the ring to appearing to guard his own mind agents it
@@AremStefaniaK hey considering the history before smaugh , might not just been dam mortal thieves but also if one considers the delicious subversion of classic high fantasy ...smaugh might been acting so greedy and cruel in mockery of the dwarfs after he took erebor as revenge i think it was the dwarfs ..third.. home/kingdom they made after fleeing moria and the elemental demon they woke up so rudely and ehm leets put it this way.. the second one already hade residents when they arrived , guess the looks of those that already lived there ...clues is scaily and wings ;)
O soberbo que subjuga a soberba alheia encontra prazer na submissão e fraqueza daqueles que ele subjuga esmaug sabe acompanhar a razão do mau em exercer poder!
Whenever he talks about the dwarves or Oakenshield, you can really hear the disgust and anger in his voice. I love those small moments when Smaug's anger gets the better of him, he's so multi layered in his short screen time. He's extremely intelligent, narcissistic, psychopathically playful. And yet at the same time he's quick to anger, impulsive and overconfident. The fact that the dwarves "dared" come to his home and face him makes him leave that home he's been comfortable in for 60 years to commit mass slaughter, just to satisfy his fury
@@alanlucin1177 no that was an inconsistency...smaug even when he was young could not fit through gates of erebor and when he died he destroyed nearly half of lake town..so this size is very accurate
Every time he spoke he gave me chills down my spine even when he confronts bilbo about the lakeman about making him watch them die just blew my mind like how cold-hearted and evil he was to do that even though he got face to face and could've easily killed him, i don't think he wanted to kill Bilbo I think he wanted to make him suffer for the rest of this life if he did survive or not
For me it’s 100% “I am almost tempted to let you take it, if only to see Oakensheild suffer. Watch it destroy him. Watch it corrupt his heart, and drive him mad…but I think not. I think our little game ends here. So tell me, thief, how do you choose to die?”
Benedict Cumberbatch not only did the voice perfectly, but he went above and beyond to do the motion capture as well. They used a lot of his movements and facial expressions for Smaug.
Kinda. While they did motion capture, the data was pretty much useless. Human and Dragon physiologies don't match at all. However, the animators did use Cumberbatch's performance as reference. His acting inspired the acting in the dragon's animation. Which was key-frame animation, not motion-capture.
Cumberbatch's portrayal in motion capture as Smaug was mesmerizing to see. He *became* that dragon. When they did a guest spot on Steven Colbert with Smaug, it was just as incredible.
I don't know either. all Tolkien dragons are evil; being made by melkor, Sauron's master. Smaug isn't even very strong, or big, look up ankalgon the black for that. Smaug seemed near impossibly powerful but that was more because everyone else was so weak, a first age army would have been able to kill smaug with few or no casualties. Off the top of my head I can remember powerhouses like finrod fellagund, beren, and several maiar kicking ass.
Steals? A dragon need not to steal what RIGHTFULLY belongs to him! Gaze upon his magnificent body! Behold his greatness! Nothing can compare to it! Nothing that walks the earth or burrows below it or flies in the sky! The movies are his and neither men, dwarves nor elves can have a single piece of them!
Why does it feel like he would want to keep sauron's ring not because of it's golden exterior but also it's dark power from mordor That would be terrifying
What’s interesting is crocodile’s scales are very hard, but they are full of highly sensitive nerve endings that can sense things that aren’t even touching them while they have their eyes closed. It would make sense for dragons to be the same way. Which is absolutely terrifying.
That's terrifying honestly, when movie creatures reach a certain level of massiveness there's almost a safety to it, like it's huge but it means you can hide like a mouse in a hole and maybe move around it and it has to find you like a person trying to find a fly that's stopped buzzing. I even thought it was kind of silly that Smaug says there nowhere to hide, the complex is huge and surely there are plenty of places he wouldn't be able to break into, but if he can "sense" where you are with his scales then it doesn't even matter if he can't see you because he can starve you out and will feel you when you try to sneak by. Thanks for the nightmare fuel
I think that’s part of Dragon lore too; As to why they love hoarding and sleeping in/on treasures like gold and precious stones and metals. If you’ve ever stuck your hand in a bag of coins, just imagine that on a massive scale and with hardened skin. May as well be on a cool memory foam mattress
3:35 "My Armor is IRON! No blade can pierce Me!" 5:02 "My Teeth are SWORDS! My Claws are SPEARS!! My Wings are a HURRICANE!!!" 8:29 "I am Fire! I am DEATH"
@@dexon777 The dragons of Middle Earth were created by the master Sauron served. Its why when the Eye of Sauron flashed on the screen the next major image was Smaug's eye. They are all connected in a way, by Morgoth. I think Smaug as a dragon could smell and hear Bilbo, as well as see the coins he was moving with his feet. He couldn't SEE Bilbo exactly. But he knew right where he was from the start. Having a magic item created by the Lieutenant of the being that created your entire race right under your nose is also probably pretty obvious to a creature like him.
4:35 "The coward Oakenshield has weighed the value of your life, and found it worth... nothing!" Sometimes I'll randomly wake up with the end of this line in my head, not being able to remember who said it, and it'll turn in my thoughts until I am able to remember Smaug said it and listen to it.
If you think about it though, was Smaug really wrong about Oakenshield? Oakenshield really only valued Baggins as a means to an end. Smaug wasn't wrong.
@@dylanguignion2036 He's still a dragon. Wyverns are dragons with 2 legs lmao, there's no difference between them other than the number of limbs. Don't be that picky.
@@VivianaSilverback eh I mean in lore he's a proper dragon, but in the movie, he has the physiology of what is typically seen in a wyvern although his other traits (mentally) are more indicative of an actual dragon. In general, calling a wyvern, a dragon is like calling a chimpanzee, a human-similar but not quite there yet, you know? Also is that horse in your pfp supposed to be Spirit? If not, then there's a movie with a horse that looks exactly like that, 10/10 would recommend haven't watched it in years but I used to rewatch it a lot. It's called, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
Its said that he didnt know according to the old book, but what tasty notion right? I like to think he senses the presence of treasure and knew magic was near
@@askthepizzaguy I like how he knew everything they were planning before they even came, none the less - even knowing they used a different race of being to sneak in just so he couldn’t smell dwarf, why do they make villains cooler than protagonist now?
@@trevormynatt3466 I don't think he knew at once, he had a strong suspicion that he coaxed out of Bilbo. It's more impressive, too, that he puts everything together in lightning speed; shows he's far more than a big lizard. He's a beast of legend with the cunning to match.
That first "Well..." is so powerful. Even with the fact that talking dragons are rather common in fiction, and that it wouldn't be a twist if you're at all familiar with the book, it's still an awesome moment because the whole buildup in the movies made Smaug out to be nothing more than a crazy wild animal. But what's the first thing he does after waking up? Speak in an inquisitive voice; conveying that this is not some mere mindless beast, but a highly intelligent creature in just a single second
Oh yeah. Very well said. I already knew that the dragon would talk, but the movie did it so well that now all time when I reread it again I have to imagine Smaug movie with that voice and body. And I remember that at the theater everyone felt this scene, those who hadn't read were actually even more fascinated when the dragon spoke! The expression of astonishment, fright and admiration was priceless! haha
This guy was MADE for the big screen. I had an awesome teacher who read the hobbit to my class when I was in the third grade, a year before these movies came out. I was so exited to see trailers for the movie coming out. When the end of the first one teased Smaug, I couldn’t wait for the second one. When I finally saw this in the theaters at 10 years old, it was a truly awesome experience. He looked even more awesome than I imagined, his thundering voice was so loud that the whole theater shook and it freaked me out! His magnitude and swagger was unbelievably badass and intoxicating to my 10 year old eyes. I’ll remember seeing this movie with my dad forever.
*"Is that YOUR child?...."* The clear implication and intent behind that line makes probably my favorite. Really drives home how much an utterly fucking evil creature he is and the sinister smile and lip flick just before really sell it.

"I am almost tempted to let you take it, If only to see Oakenshield..suffer, Watch it destroy him, Watch it corrupt his heart and drive him mad!" -Smaug🔥
Liam Lake Day you really can’t compare Smaug to ancalagon tho, i mean he was literally the size of a mountain. While Smaug is one of the smallest dragons out there😂
Benedict Cumberbatch is Smaug......he brought him to life like no one else could......hearing him speak the exact words in the book sent shivers up my back.....truly epic......😮❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Every time he spoke he gave me chills down my spine even when he confronts bilbo about the lakeman about making him watch them die just blew my mind like how cold-hearted and evil he was to do that even though he got face to face and could've easily killed him, i don't think he wanted to kill Bilbo I think he wanted to make him suffer for the rest of this life if he did survive or not that alone shows more character than what the story reveled about him it would've be really nice to see him twice as massive as the book portrayed with this kind of acting
I love Smaug so much, makes the second movie so much more enjoyable to me, I enjoy quoting him due to just how amazing his lines are. All of them are just perfect, he's a cold, ruthless beast, he put it best: "I kill where I wish. WHEN I wish!" and "You care about them, do you?? Good. Then you can watch them DIE." He is a monster simply by nature, and he's *loving* it. My second and third favorite quotes I can say by heart. "I am almost tempted to let you take it. If only to see Oakenshield *SUFFER.* Watch it destroy him...watch it corrupt his heart- and drive him MAD." and "I will not part with a single coin! Not. One. Piece of it!!" They encapsulate him perfectly, he's the best villain in my opinion, he's such a threat to everything that he comes across, he's confident he's unkillable, he's steady and methodical until his anger gets the best of him. He's the perfect mix of intelligent creature and animalistic beast, they NAILED him in the movie.
I feel sorry for anyone who didn't experience this movie in the theaters. Unless they have like some professional surround sound that is theater quality. When I saw this in the theaters. Everyone was just stunned by the epicness. They couldn't find a better actor I swear.
I doubt Morgoth ever devised a language for the dragons specifically. I'm not sure if there's a mention in the lore of him devising any language for his underlings. The other Valar created languages for their followers or adopted language from the Eldar. Sauron devised Black Speech as a means of unifying the orcish tribes under his rule and likely as an ecclesiastical language in the lands he'd subjugated or cajoled to his side.
There's something especially evocative in the line "My armor is *iron*". I'm sure it's as evocative in other languages as well. "Mein Panzer ist wie Eisen!" "Panssarini on kuin rautaa!" (as in hard as iron, not literal iron) "Ore no yoroi ga tetsu da!" "Arma mea ferrum est!" "¡Mi armadura es de hierro!"
I never thought I would have to say this but I will. This speech from Smaug “The Peter Jackson Hobbit Dragon Smaug” is quite impressive. This is the best talking Male Dragon in a Live Action Movie since Draco from DragonHeart.
I find it interesting how after saying that he'll pay Laketown a visit, Smaug didn't outright attack Bilbo when the hobbit ran towards him considering that just minutes ago Smaug was intent on killing/burning him 😆 I mean, Bilbo was so damn near Smaug and all the dragon had to do was open his mouth to either chomp the hobbit down or reach him w/ dragon fire
He could've killed him then, but he didn't because by that point he hated them so much that just killing them wasn't enough anymore. He wanted Bilbo to suffer knowing that a townful of people died, because of him. That is a much worse fate than death.
There's the inherent dissonance with basically a talking kaiju that makes Smaug so compelling. He makes very human-like expressions while still feeling animalistic and monstrous.
If he bragged that way to another dragon, wouldn't that be like a human saying my teeth are tooth picks, my nails are like needles, my skin is like slightly hard wood. After all, neither sword, spear, nor hurricane does much to a dragon.
Maybe, but dragons (the "great" ones like Smaug anyway) are among the most powerful creatures in Middle-Earth, and they know it, and Smaug seems to have a lot of disgust for things lesser than himself.
while I'm no Tolkien purest, if you were to ask me which Smauge I prefer (Smaug in the books is a European-style dragon), I'd go with Wyvern Smaug every time, it looks epic, especially when he's flying
0:59 The moment where the Ring no longer had use for hobbit and betrayed him by forcing him to remove it, risking a death from Smaug. I actually liked Sauron's involvement in Hobbit, like in this moment.
I like the sense that you get with Smaug that he really is connected to the dragons of old. The old dragons like Glaurung could hypnotise people and control them, or alter their memories. Here, we see Smaug is highly intelligent and prone to manipulating people, and revelling in their mental anguish, just as Glaurung did.
This! I was always a tiny bit disappointed that Jackson just decided that all of the dwarves of Durin's line were just...weak-willed and could fall into some kind of gold-madness, when this portrayal of Smaug just made it seem so clear that he could've done as Book!Smaug did, and laid a curse on the gold. In general, the Hobbit film trilogy felt _less_ magical than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, when the actual book always felt moreso. Middle Earth is a world of much more subtle magic (unless you're an Istari or other Maiar) than many other fantasy settings, but The Hobbit is full of it. That none of that was leaned into in the films, particularly the idea that a dragon's mere presence tainted and cursed the treasure it slept on, and that Smaug in particular had just kind of deliberately sunk all his malice into the treasure of Erebor...I was so disappointed.
I am almost tempted just to let you take it, if only to see Oakenshield suffer, watch it destroy him, watch it corrupt his heart, and drive him MAD, but I think not, I think our little game ends here, so tell me thief, how do you choose to die
Smaug is one of my favorite animal villains along with Shere Khan from the 2016 version of The Jungle Book, Rattlesnake Jake from Rango, Bosco from Marmaduke, Kaa from The Sun's Tear, and Hougen from Ginga Densetsu Weed. Favorite quote from Smaug: "You are being used, Thief in the Shadows. You were only ever a means to an end. The coward, Oakenshield, has weighed the value of your life and found it worth.. nothing."
You cant make me choose a favorite lol, the “come now, don’t be shy…*step into the light.*”, “but far more *precious…*” and “that a PACK of CANTING DOGS would come CRAWLING back TO THE MOUNTAIN” are up there
They did an amazing writing of Smaug. He may have had a short screen time, but his voice, his words, even the tone is definitely chilling, especially given he knew exactly which points to press to get under the skin.
I remember watching this in imax 10 years ago and they didn’t show what Smaug looked like before the movie came out and smaugs entrance in theatres was an experience of a lifetime
