Smells Of The 1970s! 

If I could bring back only one smell from the 70s it would have to be the original Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo. Anyone who remembers it knows what I mean.

The smell of the mimeograhed test papers will always stay with me!

That picture of everybody in the classroom smelling the mimeograohed paper cracked me up. We all did it.

Oh the memories. If only I could time travel back to the 70’s and 80’s. I have never felt so strongly about that than now with the way things are today.

Paste! Who here remembers the wonderful smell the white paste we used in kindergarten?✊😁 Or the smell of the old Fun with Dick and Jane books we used to learn to read with?

Who remembers Wind Song perfume? That was such a popular perfume back in the 70's. New Doll Smell was one of the best smells outside of New Car Smell! My older siblings had a Thingmaker. That was the coolest thing and definitely had a distinct smell. Sadly, I can't handle fragrances anymore (probably not helped due to all the toxic chemicals in things back then) but I can still enjoy the "memory scents".

Remember being allowed to go outside and play after a thunderstorm. The smell of fresh rain hitting hot pavement in the sweltering summer. That's when kids used to play outside and not stuck on video games!

60's, and 70's were the best times for kids to grow up !

Loves Baby Soft and all of the Avon Fragrances ( Sweet Honesty, Candid) were classics that extended well into the 80's.

I thought of one that I think was missed: Ten-O-Six lotion. It was a brown liquid in a clear bottle and very astringent. The smell was unique

The Sears Christmas Wish Book! It would arrive on our doorstep in the winter - it always seemed to be on a day with fresh snow. You'd have to shake the snow off of it before you brought it in and it crackled when you opened it but it had a distinctive smell.

I always remember the smell of the tiny little Avon lipstick testers, since my best friends mom was an Avon lady.

I can actually smell the scent of everything you talked about. It is crazy how our brain remembers things.

There was a shampoo called, "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific" It smelled like strawberry's. It left your hair very soft and the smell hung around for the full day.

The smell of the glass hot lightbulbs on fresh Christmas trees. The smell of fresh copies from the ditto machines. I remember everything you mentioned as a 60s kid

I was a kid in the 1960s and 1970s, entering high school in 1978. There was NEVER a better time to be a kid and there is NOTHING I'd take in trade for the years of my youth. 😃

I remember the smell of Sweet Honesty. It was similar to Love's Baby Soft, but more intense.

I always loved the smell of the inside of a brand new little golden book as a child. And was shocked to discover that freshly printed money has the same scent!

I remember that green glass bottle of Campho-Phenique liquid antiseptic. My mom would "go for the campho" for every scratch, sore, bite, or burn.

Anyone remember how good ColorForms smelled? I was so excited to see them back in stores about 20 years ago, I ended up buying a set; I was supremely disappointed that the didn’t smell the same.

Flex shampoo and conditioner. Jontue, Heaven Scent, and Tabu cologne. Bonnie Bell did a compact with three different scents like jasmine, honeysuckle, etc. The smell of paste is also memorable.

Scratch n sniff stickers were so fun at school! I miss Flex, Agree, Vidal Sassoon, Wella Balsam and other shampoos and conditioners so much and I wish they’d bring them back because I would stock up for sure. I recently bought my granddaughter some Loves Babysoft and Heaven Scent colognes but she hasn’t used them at all so I just smell them occasionally and reminisce about the magic and wonders of growing up in the 70s and 80s. I so wish the world was still sane like it was back then! My childhood was spent outdoors on my bike, my rollerskates, playing hide and seek, swimming and creating our own fun. I am blessed to have had those days.

Not only do I remember the smell of the film but also the smell of the ice cube flash you had to stick on top! 😂

That dark green bottle of Herbal Essence shampoo was heavenly. I've never stopped longing for it. GEE YOUR HAIR SMELLS TERRIFIC was another favorite.

As a girl I had a cap gun but it was so poorly made, it couldn't advance past the spent cap & refire, so I unrolled the strip of gunpowder dots & struck them with a rock. Love that smell.

My grandfather used to use the original old spice after shave and I can still smell it

I remember asking my mom to buy me the 64 color crayons when I was in elementary school, these were such a big deal back then.

All the musk perfumes and colognes, but mostly Coty’s Wild Musk Perfume Oil. I wish Coty would bring that back.

I remember buying "Agree" shampoo just for the scent,I loved it! I was a teenager in the 70's,great time!

Lemon Pledge, the furniture polish that my Mom always brings back memories for me!!

I remember the smell of Shrink-E-Dinks toys "baking" in the oven, the yummy smell of the paste my Mom used when hanging wallpaper, and Emeraude perfume.

We had a plastic pumpkin for trick-or-treating that had a very distinctive smell inside. I think Easter grass also had a smell. Others have said paste, and I’ll add Johnson &Johnson baby shampoo, Vicks vapo rub, lemon pledge, and my grandpa’s pipe.

The scent of opening a new album is STILL my favorite scent.

The plastic smell of the accessories in Ideal Growing hair dolls like Chrissy or Velvet was so distinctive. Occasionally I'll buy a comb or plastic toy that smells like that, but it's not often.

This is so true. I was walking downtown in the late 1980's and I smelt a perfume in the crowd that my high school girlfriend used to wear in the early 1970's. It took me right back to that time in my life. It was very nostalgic.

The smell of the decade for those of us who were kids in school has to be freshly printed mimeograph paper.

My grandfather was an old spice man, I still love the smell of play dough at 60 years old. The best was the smell of popcorn popping at the local Woolworth.

For me the best smell of the 1970s was the newsstand where I bought my comic books. The smell of newsprint, magazines, comic books, paperbacks, candy, unlit tobacco.

Born in 1963.I remember the 60's,70's and 80's as I was growing up.All of my senses are still in my memory of these times.

I loved the smell of Prell Shampoo. I still use Prell, but I Really miss the Prell Concentrate. They quit making it years ago. Wish they'd bring it back.

The old White Rain shampoo was great. Also, the Bonnie Bell lip smackers in the tin with the slide top

Dippity-Do had a smell that i liked as a kid. I think this hair-setting product still exists but I’m sure it doesn’t smell the same as it did in the early 1970s

I graduated high school in 73. Heaven scent perfume is one smell I will never forget. Love it still, very difficult to find now if not impossible.

I had long hair in the 70’s, and I washed it with Flex Shampoo. It had such a distinctive smell to it. It’s one of the smells of the 70’s I remember.

Bookstores had the best smells. The smell when you opened a new book made it all worthwhile! I loved Gee,Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo and the Suave Strawberry shampoo and conditioner.

There was also the smell of Radio-Shack stores that was really memorable. I don't know why but they all smelled different from any other store. It might have been the the dark red carpet that lined their floors or the batteries and electronics, but it definitely is something that I miss.

It's fascinating how spoken words about smells can trigger our memory of how some things tasted or smelled.

The one thing I didn’t see was something else I used as a child. Tinker Bell cosmetics for girls. They had a little powder compact, nail polish and chapstick. I remember a lot of the products listed and used a lot of them. Thanks for being back my childhood memories

Body on Tap (shampoo with beer in it); Avon Sweet Honesty; Babe, Jontue and Enjoli perfumes; English Leather, and Jade East men's cologne; Aqua Velva; Williams 'Lectrosol after shaves, Vitalis hair tonic. I kept my Silly Putty in an empty film canister; They were good to keep a little change in, too. The plastic jack-o-lantern Halloween candy pails had a nice, sweet smell to them back in the 70's.

It's strange how smells can take you back. School was never fun for me, so I always dreaded the first day. There was absolutely a smell. Old books, paper, ditto sheets, even rulers had a smell. When I took my son to his first day, I got a whiff of the distinct smell and my heart started pounding. Fortunately, he loved school.

I remember my grandfather smelled like Absorbine Jr and Listerine. Love's Baby Soft cologne and my favorite perfume Anais Anais. Sea Breeze astringent had a great smell. I never used it but remember the commercials for Enjoli - "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never, never let you forget you're a man..."

Somw things i remember that weren't mentioned: Aqua net. Moth ball scent on coats when it turned cooler and everyone pulled them out of storage. Grapette soda. Lava soap. Johnson and Johnsons no more tears detangler spray. Monkey blood disinfectant. Typewriter ink. Loved the video. Brought back some great memories!

I loved the smell of musk perfume but my favorite smell of the 1970s was hashish.

I know the smell of almost all of these. There was also Yardley of London,Strawberry Lip Smackers, and Dep styling gel.

my mom used to spread the 'love my carpet' powder all over the carpet prior to vacuuming and afterwards i'd crawl around the house sniffing the fresh carpet. i could still smell it today, i'm sure from all the residue still stuck up in the nethers of my olefactories 😆

I was a Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific girl! Also love Ban de Soleil tanning jelly! My favorite cologne in the early 70's was called Blue Jeans. I would give anything to smell it again. 🥰

The smell of Capt. Crunch's Crunch Berries will always take me back to my childhood. I don't think they smell or taste as powerful as they did in the day, but it's still there.

My girlfriend used to love halston perfume in HS in the 70s. l also loved the smell of vidal sassoon shampoo in those brown bottles. And all the Vita-bath products.

The smell I remember the most is that pink soap powder they put in the dispensers in my grade school bathroom. When a kid threw up, the janitor would come along and sprinkle some on the puke to mask the smell(didn't really work). Also, the hot carbon paper from my LITE BRITE, the chemical smell of that green slime novelty toy that came in a plastic trash can, and the smell of cherry flavor Chap-Stick. To this day, the smell of summer for me is a mix of tan lotion, chlorine, and new-mown grass.

Doll's hair always had a distinctive smell that I loved! Gosh, I miss those days! It's miraculous how our brains file away these smells and scents. I could remember most of these smells with just the mention of them. Great Video! Thank you!

Finesse shampoo was such a wonderful smell. Also Wild Musk cologne, Colors by Benetton and Mink hair spray.

"Love's Baby Soft" I hit a homerun when I was 14 y/o with the 16 y/o neighbor girl. I remember that scent and her scents like yesterday.

Two of my favorite smells were English Leather and Windsong. I also loved the smell of a new lunch box ( 60’s) and the smell of a new text book. I miss the 70’s.

There's a shampoo in a brown Vidal Sassoon bottle that smelled like cherries. It was amazing. Never smelled it again.

I'll never forget the smell of the plastic liner in an above ground pool. Bandaids had a smell back then too. Also, original Chap-Stik.

For many teen girls in the 70s, it was either Bonne Bell 10 0 6 astringent or my fav was Sea Breeze. But, def, the Clairol Herbal Essence original was my favorite smell of the 70s.

I remember the scent of the 70s and early 80s lotion "Rose Milk"...that smell has stuck with me on up until today! I wish they'd bring it back...IMO it was the best smelling fragrant lotion ever...LOL!!

Phisoderm was a smell I remember from childhood because the school nurses kept it around for first aid! Also from grade school was the pleasant pink powdered soap in the bathrooms, mint scented paste, tempera paint and the starch that was added to the dry form of tempera for finger painting! Haha!

You can still order "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific" and Lemon up from the Vermont Country Store. In the 70's we wore "Babe" perfume/cologne and you could order that today too. Those were the good old days & I'm grateful to be in my teens in the 70's.

This was a surreal sensory-packed presentation for sure. My brain was actually smelling through memory the majority of these examples. It’s fascinating how many of these specific things or products we subconsciously store beyond immediate memory, then remember immediately upon sight.

The smell of the tube of “bubbles” that came with its own straw. The balloons hardened as they blew up but they were a lot of fun and had a VERY distinctive smell

Wella Balsam shampoo and Suave Strawberry shampoo both smelled great. I also remember Dippity-Do styling gel had a distinct smell, as did White Rain shampoo and Aqua-Net hairspray. I loved Jovan Musk and Skin Musk by Bonne-Bell which are still around today. There were also these big plastic tubes of lip gloss by Bonne Bell that smelled like various kinds of candy or soft drinks. I loved two in particular, Orange Crush and Dr. Pepper. Cover Girl liquid makeup had its own smell, but I haven't used that in decades so I don't know if its the same or not. Whte school paste that came in a plastic jar with a brush on the lid smelled kind of minty and is probably why some kids tried to eat it. Mucilage glue reminds me of middle school art class, as does tempera paint. Mimeographed papers, rubber cement, and Liquid Paper correction fluid remind me of high school. My three favorite scents that can transport me back to childhood are crayons, Play-Doh and old library books.

Potuli (sp)/ musk oil reminds me of the ‘70’s. My sister used to wear that woodsy smelling perfume.

That new doll smell! Dolls today don't even come close. Also the smell of all the vinyl toys, like Barbie's Country Camper, Matchbox cases and playsets, the smell of Colorforms and pool toys. Gift shops in tourist areas like Wisconsin Dells and Gatlinburg has that cedar smell because of many souvenirs made of cedar.
