I have trekked all along the shoreline in the canal area. If you can get right to the airport, along that shoreline stretch, you should be golden if the fish come through. Are we going too late in the season? We always go end of April and first week of may, which we went last weekend. This waves were just too high

Hey brother, it's always a hit or a miss unfortunately and the window to get them seems to close in pretty quickly. The "run" seems to start around the same time often in the middle of April to the first week of May, with the exception of this year. I recommend you follow my Facebook page along with other Minnesota smelt groups to get the best updates. The only update I have is usually because we're willing to go try first before others. Where do you guys come from?

Yes, the smelt in Minnesota are unlimited. You keep what you catch. However, they only come in during April and you can only use certain types of nets. You can certainly dip net, it is legal. :)

It's pretty fun, I learned that it's much better when you have a bigger group. The challenge is getting those people to dip in the water with you.

They're around the shoreline right now and everyone around me seemed to be doing okay. I only tried a spot by the airport and a spot by the first parking lot. Not much of a walk really. I'm assuming the run is starting now and they should be coming to most spots, so best wishes when and if you get out there!

About 6 feet. Generally you don't want to be too short as the waves will carry them. Let me know how you adventure goes!
