“ We really need to start talking about mental health in the same way we talk about physical health.”Thank you for this

Skateboarding was literally my life, then I got leukaemia and a side effect of the steroids I had rotted my hip. I ended up having a hip replacement, but even with that, I was unable to continue skateboarding and it completely fucked up my life. Thankfully, I can still roll around down my local skatepark, and go down every couple of months and see the same old faces down there, but they’ve all progressed massively and it does get me down sometimes, but I’m still thankful that I had skateboarding in my life. I recently got into cycling, and I’m feeling like I have finally found something else to occupy my mind, and it keeps me healthy.

Sometimes the best solution to helping people with mental illness/anxiety/etc. Is to not offer a solution at all... It's strange because Nick describes this and it truly resonates once you let yourself JUST LISTEN to someone who is going through it. They just need to be heard, firstly, and then methods to fix can be explored after

Wow. This is literally what I’ve suffered through for years, having to hide it from mates and avoiding relationships with girls so no one would find out. I’m finally getting help for it and things are a lot better

Hi, can I ask what help you've got, as I've suffered the same and I've tried lots of different types of therapy and medication but nothing has really helped?

Wow thanks so much for sharing this story resonates with me alot. I am a 40 year old skateboarder and musician . Started skating around 86 and have been playing in bands since I was 13. In my 20's I was fortunate enough to do some touring around Europe and the US. This was great for a few years but towards the end of my 20's I started getting panic attacks and super anxious , very much like what Nick talks about here. In my 30's things got worse as all my friends I had been in bands with started having kids and I wasnt able to play in bands with them or see them as often. This was really hard as how can you be bummed about your friends starting a family ? Towards the ends of my 30's I lost my dad and me and my girlfriend broke this lead me to a state of complete numbness and not caring about anything and the sacriest point was having thoughts like "what if I give up" , "like what if I stop going to work and just fade away " It was at this point I got some help through the NHS . Following this each day became a little brighter learner coping mechanisms (some similiar to what Nick describes) . I have got back into skate with some renewed vigour (I never stopped but was never that frequent) . I now make my on little skateboard videos using my own music and where I can talk about mental health . Thanks again for this video

I woke up having a really hard day today. I’ve had suicidal thoughts daily for as long as I can remember now. And stumbling across bens story as a snowboarder I feel like I can relate. I’ve nearly watched all the videos from your foundation today and it’s brought me a little peace. Thank you for that.

I have a similar story except, oppositely I've always been stuck at home, and have been going through therapy. Thank you Nick Jensen! #ocd #anxiety #descriptive-elaboration I hate meds but thanks to this I have a chance to adapt to whether I do like this side, or that particular therapy that, I have to think about after watching this video.

I think way more people are willing to listen and would have more genuine empathy than those who are suffering realize, which to me is part of what makes cases where the person harms themselves that much more tragic.

Nick, thanks for talking about your anxiety, very few people will talk about it publicly. I found that the book Dianetics helped me a lot with anxiety and introversion. First couple chapters of the book are amazing. I have similar issues, but I prefer not taking pills, which I find is the most mainstream mental health treatment. Huge fan of all the British skaters, Nick J., Tom K. and Ben, of course. Atlantic Drift. You guys are all really creative and I don't want to see another tragedy like Ben. Love your art as well, Nick. Thanks for doing what you do.

My struggle is bipolar disorder. I can't really get help because I'd get fucked financially because the health insurance I have is such a high deductible that its basically worthless. I still try to manage it. Some days I force myself to go out and skate. Even then I feel alone. The other half is driving myself into debt and claiming to be a god in a way that I feel untouchable and nothing can bring me down. I went to a mental hospital when I was 17. The whole time that I got back home I was berated by my dad. Eventually I ended up homeless. I'm not anymore. That has been a decade ago. I still try to do right.

Has anyone got any theories about why modern life seems to be making so many people depressed and even suicidal?
@gerardoherrera5425
@gerardoherrera5425 4 года назад
The Moog the world and life is constantly changing, even now at a faster pace, it's natural to feel scared of change and you see so many people feel anxious or depressed, you tend to think it's normal to feel that way and accept/give in to those feelings which can seem overwhelming at times. I personally don't struggle with any types of mental health issues, but that's is just my theory on the subject.
@themoog924
@themoog924 4 года назад
@@gerardoherrera5425 Yeah, I'd agree that the pace of change is making people feel anxious. I also wonder if food, technology, atheism and materialism (among other things) are contributing to people's unease.

it's a big question, and hard to explain, ..but here goes,...... I see it as... The problem is that life for humans should be simple & natural, but instead everyone's steered to be busy, constant, and to not complain about the wrongs they see. So life wears decent people down, whether they notice it or not. Notice that kids are naturally in touch with themselves, healthy, running on instincts, following their hearts & feelings etc, ..but then when you get older and have to join into the 'world' so to speak, the trouble starts (in that the world you 'join' is a mess and totally out of sync with your natural human rhythms. It's manageable and you can handle it for some time, but it slowly drains you. Things like skateboarding & music etc are great because it gives you the things that are missing from the forced common cold-hard-slog adult world. ....Or to explain it in even simpler terms, basically the people steering the ship/running the show (world leaders/governments etc) are, for want of a better word,.... 'CUNTS!' lol ☺️
