I don’t know, I think the fillers is some the charm linked with Smile. It’s extremely episodic but considering some of them are actually great to watch, I say it’s a decent trade considering fillers in other seasons are usually underwhelming, even in good ones.

I don’t understand why you have an issue with Reika being written to be perfect all the time? That was the whole point of her character. Her fear and insecurity is that she won’t be perfect if she doesn’t do what everyone else asks and expects from her. Thats what all her episodes are about. Having her be written to act perfect all the time is consistent writing because thats what she wants to be seen as. Thats the only thing the audience is shown ti her as, until we get her character-focused episodes and learn the truth about why she’s always portrayed that way. Your other issue is that she lacks struggles and depth that isn’t impacted by Joker, but that also makes no sense. As I said before, Reika’s struggle and flaw is that she tries too hard to be perfect. How does she achieve this perfection? By doing everything everyone else asks and expects from her. They want her to force herself to be student council? She’ll do it. People want her to study abroad even if she doesn’t want to? She’ll do it. She puts everyone’s wants and desires for her above her own to maintain a “perfect” image, so she does have flaws. Saying Joker was the only thing impacting all that makes no sense. She had multiple episodes and experiences that slowly let her give up her perfect image. She always ends up beating someone, like an Akanbe or Joker, but all that development wasn’t only impacted by those things. For example, ep 16 (I believe the first character focused ep for Reika): Reika realizes that she doesn’t do much of anything for herself. She’s always been following everyone else’s paths for her, but never her own. By the end of the episode, she realizes that the studying and everything she does do is important, but making time for herself with her own free time is also important. She learns the latter from studying what her friends do in their own free time. Joker wasn’t even the villain of that ep, so it wasn’t impacted by him. Every smile cure gets multiple eps to develop until their respective ep in 40-44 and that was just one of the many eps for Reika, where she already learned a lot. To say stuff like that was only impacted by Joker is just straight up wrong when her development didn’t start in ep 44, it technically started all the way back in ep 5, but was given more focus in ep 16 and onward. She was always growing and slowly learning to follow her own path. Joker just happened to be her final obstacle, but she overcame that too due to encouragement from her grandfather and from her friends.

@@xempororhxppyx I get what you’re trying to say. However why did she get plot armor in several episodes that aren’t even hers (ep 10, 12, 14, 19, 20, & 35) even in ep 23 she didn’t fight Joker on her own. She had assistance from Pop which in a way wasn’t even a fair fight compared to the other characters. In episode 14 she really didn’t need to have butterfly wings when that episode could have been any other character but they doubled down her favoritism as If I wasn’t going to notice 😑. Peace could have easily driven Robo Happy & let’s be honest Beauty reading the book that Peace len her several minutes & suddenly now knowing how to drive her after reading an entire page is impossible & unbelievably wrong 😠 when she clearly had her mind focused on the fight than on the book. Yes she is the Book worm, but reading a manual about Robo info especially Robo Happy for me didn’t seem believable. In ep 12 she could hear been trap into a bubble when using her projectile move that left her completely vulnerable for one more bubble attack from that akambe. So her perfect is warranted all over the show even in some episodes that aren’t hers as I said before. & no I’m not wrong about the Perfection parts in her episodes. She was written to be a Mary sue. Think about it. If ep 16 actually gave her a Blue nose Akambe to fight while her other cure peers failed to do. She would have been done for. So no she doesn’t struggle enough because the plot doesn’t want her to have any hardship struggles like Miyuki being switched bodies, Yayoi drawing destroyed, Akane doll getting crushed, not having the chance to get butterfly wings, having only one parent, getting turned invisible, being scared of bugs ghost heights, etc. & if you still believe that I have resentment towards her & hatred. No I don’t. I still love her character just as I love the other 4 cures. & I’m starting to write a fanfiction where Beauty/Breeze isn’t given as much plot armor as she was given by Toei Animations. & her good luck in year 2 has expired & now has a new fortune 🥠 saying- be prepared for the misfortune of a part time. from a Chinese restaurant & it will begin with her now finding what she desires as she can finally choose her path freely from anyone who can’t pressure her into making her do what they think is best for them. As she takes her new path for granted she’ll experience several obstacles of bad luck as Miyuki had experience. But she’ll never be abandoned & Miyuki & her gang will convince her you are still a very good best friend even in a rough time of hardship. & lastly she’ll not fight Joker anymore for two reasons. 1 reason Happy is now destined to fight him & Sunny & March will fight him way later too. 2 reason I’m not letting the Joker Beauty shippers have their way again & It needs to die off because it’s sick 😵‍💫. & March will definitely have more character development than she previously did in year one 😌. & Cure Happy & Peace will finally get their butterfly wings 🦋.

@@DinoMan2945 I agree with some of your points but not others. Like, yeah, you’re kind of right about Beauty having assistance when fighting Joker, but Joker was by far more powerful and smarter than any of the other commanders. Thats not debate, we know that for sure. So it makes more sense for Pop to help Beauty who would need more help than any of the others. Plus he didn’t help much, he was a shield at best, but Beauty still did the attacking and took a lot of hits still, so its not as if he did much. You are right about the Robo Happy thing tho, Reika knowing how to drive it made no sense. I think I agree with what you said about the struggle thing, as she doesn’t always have as much misfortune going on as the other characters or fears, but calling her a mary sue is still wrong. A mary sue is a character with either no flaws or flaws that don’t affect them. They’re also a character who is always right & is perfect. Reika has flaws, she just doesn’t nearly have as many flaws as the others, which is a reasonable thing to be upset over. I get why. And her flaws do affect her a LOT. So while she doesn’t have nearly as much flaws as the others, she still does have one that affects her a lot. Also, you mentioned the bad things that happened to the girls in ep 40-42 (like when you said Yayoi’s drawing got crushed, and Akane got her treasure destroyed), but Reika still had an extremely traumatic experience in that episode. She was being manipulated by Joker, and it got so bad that she had a breakdown and temporarily lost her powers because of all her stress. She was also stressed out about disappointing the ppl she cared abt (which is why she was so easy to manipulate), so to ignore all that trauma that she went through just because it wasn’t physical damage is pretty inconsiderate about what Reika had to go through in that ep. I also don’t really get why the butterfly wings matters? Sure the other’s missed out but it wasn’t a huge deal. The other cures could have tested out the butterfly wings any time afterwards if they wanted to. Reika getting to use smth all of the others can use at any time isn’t really a big deal.

@@xempororhxppyx Fair point. & I do take the part back of her being a Mary Sue. But she does get overrated when the shows pacing demands to. & I do agree she did have her moments of struggles. Even in ep 37 when the odds were extremely against her after the villains disguise themselves as ordinary students in order to become council president & her friends stuck to her side no matter how bad circumstances might be in order to win the election. & as for the Butterfly Decor part It kind of is for me personally. Because the butterfly wings would have paid homage to their predecessors Yes Precure 5. & Cure Happy is my favorite out of the 5 & I would have loved her even more with those pink wings. & it would have been nice to have been used in combat against one of the villains. Sadly we’ll never get to see it 😞. & there isn’t any fanart for it in any art sites as I searched for since this season is the most criminal underrated season in the franchise. Even more so than HeartCatch Precure 😔 that not even the Glitter Force localization isn’t enough to raise awareness to make more fanart for em. Thus she still remains treated unfairly even in Precure All Stars. That’s why I left from that continuity & began with fanfiction instead . Because Toei animations could care less since the gave the licensing rights to Saban & Netflix. & they have been unreliable for a sequel Smile Precure season ever since. 😤. PS they couldn’t even use the Butterfly Decor anymore after it was disregarded for a more powerful projectile attack aka the Rainbow burst.

@@xempororhxppyx One last thing. Reika will no longer be Council President in my fanfic. This happens because her grades are far behind as she’s to busy going to the arcade’s wanting to win a prize with loads of tickets. Miyuki will take the presidency until graduation day. First she does improve in her grades as the principal, prefixes, professors, & Counsel body selects her since Reika didn’t finish her term & Miyuki wins reelection for her humble heart. & no I’m not trying to undermine Reika. She’s still an incredibly valuable character & she needs to be treated with the misfortune fairly & equally compared to the other 4 colleagues. Something Toei failed to do since the company was dealing with tropes, constraints, & biased favoritism before continuing with the next season. Nao will be given the most painful hardship of all. 2 of her family members (Not the ones who were held hostage by the Akambe) mother & newborn baby sister will die in a car accident. I didn’t wanted to do this at first but it’s something that needs to be done in order to raise the stakes & bring her more closer to Yayoi to feel a sense of pain that way she felt since she was young. & it comes with the benefit of having more character development into her arc until Nao’s father marries Yayoi’s mother, but will happen way later. Akane love interest Brian Taylor will fall short since he will not be the love interest she desires. He’ll be a love experience for her & her friends will encourage her that they are proud for her to have experience a date for the first time than not at all. Akane soul mate will be Nao since they have a lot in common & it’s been with her the whole time she just didn’t know it. Yayoi is still in development. Miyuki will return to Marchenland & that particular area will have more screen time more than just one episode. I’m also temporarily getting rid of the princess froms so that they’ll start all over again from scratch with their based forms & as for the Royal clock ⏰ & Ultra Forms I’m destroying them & putting them in trash can 🚮 never to be mentioned again. Sakagami Ayumi aka Cure Echo will sadly not be included & be non canon because honestly there’s nothing interesting about her & is a precure All Stars exclusive & as a result her character got wasted. Nico & The Movie: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book will also be non canon for similar reasons. Just like the Book & even Precure Allstars too. Thank you for understanding 😊. I agree. One of the reasons I love this season so much are the characters. All of them gets to shine and none feel left out or are bad characters. It’s possibly my favorite cast in the entire franchise so far....

@@nintendolife25 what about the others before Smile (Futari Wa - Suite) and to the one after (Dokidoki - Hugtto)? What do u think of them? I personally rate them as this: Futari Wa: Love it Max Heart: Ok (cause of Luminous...and looking back, because of her, most of the screentime i noticed now is mainly on Black, not much to her partner White, which is a shame cause i love both of them and wanted them to have a shared screentime like before, not one side outshine the other...) Splash Star: Love it Yes! 5 and Gogo!: both are Meh (i havent watched them) Fresh: also Meh (same reason) Heartcatch: Love it Suite: Meh (again, same reason) Smile: Love it Dokidoki: Hate it (Mary Sue and the "Ace" Twist) Happiness Charge: Hate it (Mary Sue) Go! Princess: Love it Mahou Tsukai: Hate it (forced Yuri moments, poor character writing, a lot of things dont make sense, etc) Kirakira: ....burn it in hell (same reason as MTP...only waaaaay worse and more) And lastly Hugtto: mmmmmm...honestly, im in the middle in this one tbh soo ill just put it as "Ok" ^^;

I like all the cast from the OG to Suite, even some I have yet to complete. I prefer some more than others, of course, but overall I like every single cast for the most part. After Smile, Princess and Hugtto are the only seasons containing a cast I legitimately like. Maho Girls is overall fine for me, I’m not really keen on Dokidoki or Happiness Charge, and Kirakira has the most mixed cast in the franchise since it’s both the season’s strong and weak point.

I say the second strongest or tied with Sunny (Because of her strength) as the second strongest really. She did beat Joker but for some reason, she doesn’t have as much of a good run with the others. Especially Wolfrun. Pink Leads tend to be the strongest among their team, save for a few. And considering Happy has three attack, a stronger version of Ultra Cure and that last minute MadokA thing in the final episode, I say she fits the bill.

I always thought Nao never had a character arc, and I’ve wanted to rewrite her to be a character similar to that of Toph from ATLA- a strong character who never does things like asking for help out of a fear of showing weakness. I also wanted her to be a character who carries a lot of weight because of this, and that she overwhelms herself with protecting her siblings. After reading your comment though, I’ve realized that, aside from the last part abt her siblings, she actually *was* a lot like that. She has multiple eps showcasing her fears. I always thought they were just to humanize her (which they do), but they also show how she was also capable of vulnerability, despite how tough she is. Her episode in ep 42 also makes a lot more sense now- it showcased this vulnerability, with the idea that Nao couldn’t protect her siblings all by herself. Wow.

@@xempororhxppyx I can see that for sure; she grows the least out of everyone. For a while now, I've held the opinion that Nao isn't challenged as much as her friends. That she has weaknesses, but that the show never really prods at them like it does for the other main characters. But your comment made me reconsider that. I always thought Episode 42, while horrifying in a good way, was too similar to her proper debut in Episode 4. But you're right; she *loses*. She fails to protect her siblings and has to be helped out, whereas in Episode 4 she takes care of the Monster of the Week all by herself. So that got me to think... Maybe it's more that her weaknesses are, more often than not, played as a joke rather than taken seriously as the crippling phobias that they are. Humour is an integral part of Smile, but I feel like they overdid it a little for Nao's flaws. And this led me to my other half of my criticism on Nao, which I think is probably the bigger 'issue' (quotation marks because she's awesome and I love her): Nao, as a character, is rather narrowly written. Everyone else gets several facets to them that are revealed over time. Reika is an outlier, but her internal battle is at least expressed in different ways throughout the show. Nao, though, only gets her phobias and her family to work with. Her competitive spirit only seems to flare up when playing football or when she's around Akane, because Akane is a firecracker who can't help herself. On the subject of sports, it's really odd that Akane, who only plays volleyball as a hobby, has that sport used in interesting ways by the writers. Yet Nao, who actually seems to want to compete, only plays football/soccer in her introduction and her epilogue, and she never struggles in either scenario. I think what could've really helped her was a situation where she had to choose between doing the responsible thing, like helping out her family, and doing something she loves, such as playing football. She does take on a lot of responsibilities and I think that could've resulted in a big crisis for her. She loves her family and she'd do anything for them, but what if her mother's pregnancy starts to affect the time she has to play sports or have fun with her friends? What if her devotion to her family gets to be too much and she cracks under the pressure? (After all, her parents *keep adding more siblings*, oh god why.) Or, just a thought, add in a Nao football episode where she actually gets challenged in some way instead of just scoring every time she gets the ball on-screen? ^^; For example, imagine a scenario where she's off her game and has to somehow get it back before a big match. Or, because she's such a straight shooter, there's some injustice on the field that isn't punished, and she has to grapple with her feelings about it. In my opinion, these are logical ideas that the writers could've done something with, but didn't. (Although her succumbing to pressure IS present a bit in Episode 42.) I still consider Episode 18--the relay race--Nao's best episode, because it shows her failing and responding to that failure. And she gets to show all kinds of traits! She leads and unites the team, she plans their exercises, and then she actually manages to train them (teaching stuff is hard!). She's competitive, sure, but she's also laid-back, because the competition has more of a, 'I want us to give it our best shot as the underdogs versus that really competent track team the other class has' vibe. The ending hit me like a truck. They didn't need to win, but she gave it her all *for them*; that was why she overexerted herself and lost them the entire race. She let them down. And that kills her so much she breaks into tears in public, in view of all her classmates. That's huge for her and I wish we'd seen more of that in the show, maybe culminating in Nao becoming more open, perhaps more accepting of that part of herself. Because I feel like she usually hides it, except when she's with close, trusted people, you know? Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just love Nao. ^^; Hope it made some sense; I was typing so furiously that midnight came and went before I knew it.

@@TirOrah don’t apologize at all for the rant! I love ranting about shows I like, so I’ve done the same with smile precure lol. Anyway, I think those examples would’ve been a perfect fit for Nao! I wish they showcased her vulnerable side like that a lot more. And I completely agree with what you said about Nao’s struggles being played for laughs. I feel like they shouldn’t have made those jokes, after all those would’ve been great building blocks for a character flaw for Nao, yet instead they’re downplayed and their potential is wasted. It’s unfortunate. I still will always love Smile PreCure, but there is a ton of wasted potential in the show. Like the decors, I feel like they had a lot of potential. They could’ve had actual uses, like making the food decors heal the Cures, or give them boosts like a speed boost or smth, but instead they’re just left to be regular foods for some reason, yet are somehow magical and made to help revive the Queen..

​@@xempororhxppyx I think something like her fear of ghosts is fine for a comedy episode, but yeah, I think the humour/seriousness balance is a bit off for that aspect of her. I agree that the Decors feel really inconsistent. They were used a few times to transform the Precure, but I think that's about the only interesting uses they got. Akane getting a shinai (in the Brian episode) was fun, but in the end she could've done that with a variety of objects. The Decors just feel pretty shoehorned in, like they're only there to progress the plot and sell toys, and they didn't have any better ideas. I think they should've done more with the book, the one Candy flies in with. They set up this thing in Episode 6 where each of the previous episodes has added a new page to the book, but that never came up again. People say Smile doesn't use its fairytale motif very well, but I watched this one video in which the person said Smile itself is structured like a fairytale. It's highly episodic, highly formulaic, even highly repetitive, and the girls tend to learn some sort of lesson each episode. Viewing it through that lens, it makes total sense why Smile is the way it is (flaws and all), and it even makes the decors feel more fitting, like they're whimsical artifacts. But what if each episode added a new page to the book, essentially creating their own fairytale as they went? I think that'd be really cool! And it'd make the book relevant every episode, instead of basically being forgotten until the finale, where it's suddenly important again. If the dark ink had also covered all of their wacky adventures, it would've made more sense. I think Toei didn't value that book from a toy line perspective, though, which is why we got the decors. Maybe it's just me, but I disagree; the marketing potential is there. You could have all kinds of colouring books! They did make those anyway, but what if there's a big book with all the pages from the show? I think kids would love that. And maybe there could be another one which was styled like a manga Yayoi would draw, where you get to colour in the characters but also fill in the dialogue! And so on and so forth.

@@nintendolife25 really not a big fan off hers tbh. Yeah she had good episodes (not seen movie yet) but i found her kinda meh and at times annoying.

Especially when considering how the season showcased her later and we have actual annoying Pinks in later installments. With decent leadership, good background, and a great movie, she’s easily another one of the season’s best girls.
