@@ThatSpecificIndividual I like to think that in the infinite universes and whatnot, Lord Farquad ascends to become the Emperor of Mankind just to annihilate Shrek.
@@meonkrishnanan5920Templars were not a nationality, nor was the Renaissance. Templars were an international order, and the Renaissance was a time period across all of Europe, not a place.
I was half expecting Charlie to show Pim what was on his phone and it would be the little chewing character but he would play it completely straight and say that it was the renaissance men.
I love how everyone in the office is just doing pointless shit, like Alan is writing down what's in the fridge and Pim is just playing with a paper clip
I like how none of them are always the straight man in the group, they each get turns being the one person who reacts normally to what’s going on. Pim being frustrated with Charlie’s inability to clarify who the Renaissance Men are, Alan being bewildered by the man in the wall, etc. it’s fun
Even at the end of the episode (1:05), Pim still gets annoyed with Charlie since he *still* has no idea what the Renaissance men are or what they do. He even acknowledges that "They didn't look like renaissance; It's like, a completely different era." Every character has such a wide, realistic set of emotions and reactions to the shit happening around them, it's insane how well these characters are written. Honestly, I was worried about Pim being a "blind-to-the-world, dense, happy-go-lucky" sort of character with the pilot, but he actually ended up being one of the most fun, dynamic characters in the show.
@@GWROliver I’m also glad they haven’t gone the route of “innocent optimist turns evil” for the sake of a joke. They always stay true to his character instead of sacrificing it as the butt of a cheap joke
I love how many of their interactions and conversations sound so natural and smooth almost as if they're just recording someone talking without script or something
The defeatist, "okay" from Pim is so real. In a conversation with someone where both parties are confused and zero is at stake, it's the exact kind of delivery you'd expect from someone who just decided the argument isn't going anywhere and isn't worth it anymore.
When I first saw this in the episode, I thought Pim was being unreasonably confused and inquisitive. Watching it again now, he’s asking very reasonable questions. I didn’t hear him say “like the renaissance fair?” that changes the whole deal.
Honestly, what is Alan and Glep’s job at Smiling Friends HQ? From the looks of it, Alan’s like a janitor/inspector or something and Glep’s just there. I hope they’ll expand on them and the other 2 women in future seasons.
@@CrystalTigerclaw i almost think it's supposed to be a subtle joke in and of itself that you never see them doing anything that you could qualify as truly work-related. 😂 but yeah, i'm sure it'll be expanded upon later!
whyd you have to go and make things so complicated? i see the way youre acting like youre somebody else. gets me frustrated. simply admit that i am the funniest and greatest and sm*rtest and coolest and strongest yout*ber of all time! admit it, dear josh

Fun fact: Zach and Mike were absolutely stumped on how to finish this episode, but they had the idea to implement this gag based off of a real life conversation had between Zach and Mike
I love how the thing that enrages Pim is NOT the fact that the Renaissance Men rolled up and murdered Grim and Gnarly, but that he STILL can't make heads or tails out of who they are supposed to be 😂
I just love how pim gets pissed off about The Renaissance men not being from the Renaissance Pim Might actually know a lot about history or at least enough to know what The Renaissance was
Honestly the writing in this show is so just... Real. People actually mishear each other and have pointless conversations that go no where. Genuinely feels like a conversation I could have with one of my friends
Charlie's comments of "beautiful ending" and "I told you at the beginning" implies that he knows that he's in a TV show, which explains much of his character
I love how the dialogue is so organic, like the stutters, the little interruptions yet it doesnt sound forced or is intruding for the viewer to listen to
Pim's exhausted but angry "okay" to Charlie is so real lmao. It's like Charlie keeps bringing up the Renaissance Men without any helpful information just so he can say something.
It’s like a lie straight out of Oney Plays. All it would need is a “dude I’m not kidding” or “I’ve been saying this for years and no one’s been listening to me”
The goofiest thing is that if charlie would actually read the article attached to the headline he would know who, and what the renaissance men are. It speaks to his character that he reads the headline, and nothing else even when questioned about the content.
I've heard several people refer to the dialog in this show as being very authentic, and despite the absurd resolution, this joke exemplifies that for me. I listened to Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel talk about Smiling Friends' creation process on The Create Unknown podcast. Apparently, the opening of Frowning Friends was more or less an actual conversation that the two of them had during some late-night brainstorming for the Frowning Friends episode. Zach (very much being Zach, if you're familiar with OneyPlays) said something about the Renaissance Men coming into town, and Michael responded with genuine confusion as to what he was talking about, and the whole thing went on for like 15-20 minutes.
I love how in the last scene Pim is just like “..okay.” Like you can tell he wasn’t satisfied with Charlie’s response but didn’t want to bother arguing anymore lmao
I can totally understand where both sides are coming from. If I was Pim, I really wouldn't know how to progress the conversation if I didn't know who the Renaissance men were. That "okay." was so real.
"Pim, I told you this was Jurassic Park." "Cause these dinosaurs aren't even from the Jurassic era -" "Pim, I'm telling you the extent of my knowledge."
Me thinking "they dont look like they are from the renaissance period" like the annoying history nerd that I am and then Pim saying "That's not renaissance" right after sent my sides flying the first time I watched this. Such a weird but amazing gag most other shows wouldn't do, that's why this show needs as many seasons as the creators want until they feel it's done.
This is one of my favorite jokes in the show because I love the way it was set up in the start of the episode and then unexpectedly resolved in the ending.
It's so out-of-character of Pim to basically ignore a double murder because he's confused about the Renaissance men, but it still fits perfectly because of how well it was set up.
I love how Alan and Glep, who are usually the weirdest members of the group , are shocked, but Pim is just confused by the sheer audacity of the situation and gets mad at Charlie when he just accepts it.
I love the audio design in this show so fucking much. Glep is amazing, the laughs from the frowning friends are hilarious, and the "Rhuaaa!" the renaissance men make is amazing and brings a smile to my face every time I hear it.. Although the whole show does that so...
I can so vividly imagine Zack scrolling through twitter and trying to gaslight michael that the rennaisance men are coming to down. It has the same vibe as President Carter killing himself except if he actually did it
I can't stand how Zach knows how to perfectly replicate all of the most fucking frustrating conversations I've ever had with other human beings. I mean, not about the renaissance men specifically obviously, but those people who make asking basic questions like pulling teeth out through your ass.
Fun fact they were out of ideas for the episode and needed and ending so the renaissance men thing was an actual conversation they had where Michael was very confused
When me and some friends watched this episode we totally missed the renaissance men part at the start cause we were hyper fixated on the fact that the Rubik’s cube doesn’t change.
