have you ever considered the fact that they are both sun gods? I mean if Pontus,Oceanus and Poseidon can all be gods of the seas why can't Helios and Apollo be both gods of the sun. And also I believe that Helios is the sun while Apollo just carries the sun across the sky.

Um Helios has pretty much always been seen as the physical embodiment of the Sun. Hyperion was the Titan god of light and the watcher from on high. Hyperion fathered all of the lights of the day: Helios (Sun), Selene (Moon) and Eos (Dawn); from his sister/wife Theia (Titan goddess of site and female counterpart to the Titatn God Aether. Also called the lady of Aether or simply Athere). Pretty much all mythology back this up.

Lazy writing and Hollywood intervention usually ends with the unscrupulous merging of several myths and roles for their own benefit. The general public, being under-educated in such culture/lore, tend to buy into it; which I hate. It's just like the curious presence of the Kraken ( a monster of Norse Mythological origin) for some reason usually being associated with the Greek gods. Practically pop culture (including a certain popular game series about a war mongering God Slayer/son of Zeus) can track the Kraken's mistaken identity as a beast of the Greek god's (usually Poseidon) back to the movie from the 1980s, Clash of the Titan's, and it's 2010 remake.
