Thank you so much for posting this video. I was able to fix my daughter’s typewriter even though it wasn’t the same exact model. It had the same problem. Took me 10 minutes to fix after watching your video. Thank you so much.
I want to thank you for this video! We just acquired this typewriter and this was exactly the problem. Because of your video my husband fixed it in less than five minutes! Thank you so much
Thanks for this. That was my problem. I think this is common because the rubber bumper part disintegrates and gums up the pawls. I replace the rubber piece with silicone. Hoping for the best.
I had a very similar model to this for several years before it developed this problem. I tried my best to google it and was told two things. 1.) it is not fixable 2.) it is only on electric models. So I found myself on facebook marketplace buying a used 1954 smith-corona sterling manual typewriter for $25. I paid and took it home only to find out that half of the keys were not working and the other half became stuck when I pressed them. After two months of various repairs, I finally got it working. I wrote one paragraph before this issue began to pop up on the manual typewriter. Because of this video I am hoping that I will be able to fix it. Thank you.
Virtually all Smith Coronas, manual or electric are fixable by a qualified typewriter technician Smith Corona are one of the easiest typewriter to learn to fix, everything is accessible is a key factor Most typewriters you can't get to the escapement and pawls like these SCM's
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 I know that it may be a longshot, but I was hoping that you may have some tips to fix a manual typewriter with this same issue. I have deep cleaned the escapement but to no avail. What else could be causing this problem?
Hey Mr. Phoenix man, I’m having the same problem with a beautiful Royal aristocrat. It was supposed to be a birthday present for a friend, a Lyft driver dropped my suitcase and it started happening. Sadly, I don’t have my tools here or my laquer thinners. Birthday is in two days! I’ll let you know how it goes. Love your channel and your videos have helped me refurbish a couple royals already. Thanks you sir!
I'm having a similar issue on a Smith-Corona Coronet XL electric. It doesn't seem to be the pawl that's sticking, but when I get it to lock, it doesn't last long and no typing can be done.
Greetings! I sent you an email asking if you have any videos about this same issue. I have an old portable with a carriage that won’t latch. I will see if I see anything like this latch on my model. Thanks!
Every make typewriter is different, but basic escapement concept is the same. SCM are the most accessible, unlike a Royal QDL, buried deep inside. I only usually video actual broken machines, lots of times it is just sticking parts
Great video. I think I have a similar issue on an ultraportable Olivetti, but the parts are so hard to see. What do you do when you have the machine as apart as possible, but you still can’t see enough to tell if a tooth might be broken or something?
