Thank you so much for this video. I am going to continue watching. I have a tower from sears roebuck. Got it for a steal and it’s in great shape.

This helps so much just in general! Thank you! I'm buying a Remington no 7 today and it definitely needs a cleaning and fixing for sticky keys

The missing lever on the left above the arrow key is the key pressure lever. Like the later 50s models of the Smith Corona, Underwood updated their typewriters to include the option to set your own key pressure... I like the snap of light key which also lets me type a smidge faster. At least, I like to think it does.

It’s a very light touch. You’re probably a better typist than me if you really enjoy this type of machine! My fingers sometimes “mush” the keys, so I have to be very decisive on this Underwood

Great video. I also found an Underwood Leader at a reuse store. It had a white substance all over the keys which I was able to scrape off. It is pretty dirty underneath so I am looking forward to your next video in this series!

Many plastic keys from this era will leach white residue! I had it on my Royal Futura. Got it off with some Goo Gone, followed by soap and water with a plastic scrub brush. Dry the keys quickly after and they should be much better. And the magic ingredient, as always, elbow grease. I’ll show some key top cleaning in an upcoming video

@@inkiron3907 oh that is interesting! I was thinking someone rubbed white out all over the keys. There is also the same white substance on the carriage advance knobs. I think I got most of it off on the keys but I will try Goo Gone on the knobs. On mine, besides the white substance there was a LOT of red particles down inside the typewriter - I thought maybe it was eraser shavings? I managed to use compressed air and a vacuum to get most of that out. Also a few of the keys still stick, so I'm trying to figure out how to clean in between the segments better.

I have just started your series, and I am heartened! I have a 1952 Underwood Leader, and also have the issue of the right margin tab in back that doesnt seem to stop the carriage.. Also, the return bell is very faint. Although your Underwood is newer, so far the mechanisms seem about the same! Very excited to find you!

Thank you so much for this video and the series. I have a few typewriters which are in various stages of dirtiness and/or disrepair and I am hoping to get at least one or two of them working over time. Also got Rev Ted Munk’s Typewriter Repair Bible.

Awesome cleaning video. I mean Awesome. I have an ooooooooold a** typewriter and I want to clean it up and put it to some good use. I came on here to search how to clean it. I love your video because you did not submerge yours into water, geez. When I seen those guys spray all that water into there machines, I was like “Naw, I’m not a professional, I bet not do that” So, I like how you showed me a more comfortable way to clean it. I must say, it is caked with dirt and everything works its just dirty asf. Thank you for your video!!! ❤🙌🏽

I’m glad you didn’t dunk it in water or hose it out! Idk how people do that in good conscience. I always thought they were just asking for rust deep in the mechanisms. I’m happy I could help you 😁

This Underwood "Leader" was actually Underwood's budget model That's why it does NOT have Ribbon selector (black only), No Touch Control and No Bell . . . Type segment needs a chemical flush bad !
@inkiron3907
@inkiron3907 2 года назад
Makes sense! The bell was just very gunky. A bit of isopropyl cleaning and it came back to life. Also flushed the segment and it’s about 99% better. Still have a key stick on occasion

Hey Joe. I have a 1953 Underwood De Luxe. Very similar design. As such, it has the peg that activates the space bar that you point out around 11:28. Did you ever figure out its purpose? Did not see it in the other vids. Thanks!
@inkiron3907

I never did find out its purpose. I still can’t imagine why you’d need access to the space bar right there

I have a Burroughs, but I don’t have a case or a cover for the keys. How would I get one?
@inkiron3907
@inkiron3907 Год назад
Covering a typewriter is easy. A handkerchief or even a piece of paper will keep dust out of the internal mechanisms. Cases are challenging. Other small luggage can work or I’ve seen plans for wooden typewriter boxes online.
