Would you recommend that the barbell rest on the rear delts or the upper traps. For me, the safest position is the rear delts.

I agree that the safest position is on the rear delts, as I'm demonstrating in the video. Placing the bar lower on your shoulders prevents it from rolling up onto your neck. This isn't as critical on the Smith machine since the bar can't move as much, but it definitely matters with a free-weight barbell.
