We have had our Scout now for 2 years, and it has been awesome. It is obviously heavy modified and with me just finishing the Carbon Fiber Tongue box.... we are now ready for another season in the Rockies.
So that's what it's like to camp when you're rich. Smittybilt trailer $6000, rooftop tent $1500, modifications/extra parts and accessories probably another $3000. Nice setup, but a pipe dream for most. Plus, all the work you did to make it so nice. Those trailers come bare-bones.
Everything is relative right. Patriot..... xventure..... I would say the smitty is on the less expensive end though, but what attracted me to it was the fact that it begged to be modified. My next goal in life is to build one up with galvanized frame on a good suspension setup and then everything above the frame will be carbon fiber and foam panels. If I can just fine the time..... :)
Hello, I really enjoyed video, a lot of cool upgrades on your scout trailer. I recently just picked one up used and I’m looking at options for it. The one question I have for you did Jackie put on there? Looks very intriguing. Is that one of the first things I’m thinking of replacing that bolt on the area that’s there for the jack? And that box you had was that a custom build or is there a company that makes those I will look in your review below and see if you have a listed there too. Thank you so much. Have a great day.
@jr_jeep4470 The front jack I installed myself, if that is what you curious about. The front carbon fiber box I made myself. The link to the build is a few posts down. I am sure you will have a great time with your scout. Congratulations.
Hi Garrett. I had to trim the top and bottom, for aesthetics, but you don't have to. I used two of the holes and drilled two new ones. Here is a link to the Expedition portal forum where I have a few pictures. www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/smittybilt-scout-trailer-reviews.174189/page-127
Wonderful video. I just bought mine today. Now after watching this I am really excited. Do you have a part number or name for the carbon box as I was unable to locate it on the expedition website. Many thanks!
Super excited you found the video helpful. It is perhaps the most modified Scout out there. You wont find the Carbon box for sale as I build it myself. If you look at the link below, it will take you to my High Desert Carbon Works FaceBook page. Dont worry, the page does not sell anything, and is purely made for educational purposes, so interested parties can perhaps dap their hands in composite construction. It took a bit of time to make the box, but it turned out great. I have since sold the trailer for the simple reason that our family grew to big and we could no longer all sleep comfortable in the RTT. I do miss it though, but think the new owners are enjoying it tremendously. Good luck on modding your scout. It is a great little unit, and very easy to modify.
Very nice setup. Thanks for all the great ideas. We have been trailering since the 80’s with a small trailer that we converted into a tent/compartment trailer. Just recently got the Smittybilt Scout and love the features and price point. Question, where did you get your two burner stove? Thanks again for the very thorough review.
Hi there Scott. You are quite welcome. As you can see one of the strong points of this trailer is it's customizability. Simply fantastic if you are looking at buying a trailer at a very reasonable price, then add your personal touch.... :) I bought the stove at Cabelas. I don't recall the brand, but it was a small 10 inch double burner.
I believe this is the model. I looked and it appears that Cabelas no longer carries it: www.bbqguys.com/cajun-cookware/2-burner-low-pressure-propane-gas-burner-and-stove-gl562?species=shopping-ad&campaignid=1558034804&adgroupid=83179586789&creative=396774081536&targetid=pla-810840090605&network=g&device=c&adtype=pla&productchannel=online&productid=7236&productpartitionid=810840090605&gclid=Cj0KCQjwyur0BRDcARIsAEt86IB1YMIoVfPQuyeD2GVNYHZiVL7PD6kUUDsFK2VqmQBMu550Sn25M3IaAgS7EALw_wcB
Yeah.... We ended up with 150 watts in total and I think 200 watt would have been the sweet spot. We have since sold the trailer as we outgrew the sleeping araingements. G4 is a great bird.
@@rjet43 It was the best mod to that trailer really. All of a sudden I had room for the extras. It took a long time to build it but much of that was due to the fact that I was designing it from the ground up. Things never work out as you plan.... ha ha. In the end it was just a perfect addition. You can save a lot of time if you can purchase the composite panels and then just bond them together.
I used the bolts that held the Smitty logo and simply drilled through the boxes through the existing holes. Then sat down the boxes on a bead of adhesive on top of the fenders.....installed the bolts but now with the logo inside the box. Simple as that.
Hi there Julius. They dont have one as they come bare bones from the factory, begging to be modified. The entire carbon fiber box in the front was made to house several things. A water tank was one of them. In this case I added a 12 gallon fresh water tank and pump to go along with it. We have however since sold the unit, and I believe this awesome trailer now resides in Colorado Springs, CO.
Hi Justin. Yeppers. I was the first one to tackle this back a few years ago. You can follow the entire build on Expedition Portal here: www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/smittybilt-scout-trailer-reviews.174189/page-26
