You should have proper filters between the comgrow hood and fan or the particles will coat the blades and get into the motor itself. Maybe a filter box going to the fan.

@Make with Tech I was wondering what would happen if you put an N95 on the exhaust side of the smoke filter. It might block too much ofvthe airflow of the smoke filter I'm not sure. Just a thought.

Very nice! I bought a laser engraver and got that exact same inline fan and the comgrow enclosure to try and bring it in the house from the garage so I could play during the winter but my basement is concrete and i have no vent to the outside :( We even have to vent our dryer into a container of water since we have no outside vent. With your knowledge could you think of a way to use this setup without an exhaust fan in the wall? I was thinking of trying to exhaust it up the chimney but then I wouldn't be able to use the fireplace. We do have some windows and I was thinking of building a box with insulation packed in it to keep the window open and have the exhaust fan in the box rather than the wall but I just don't know how that would work without being able to close the window for rain and snow. Anyway, very nice follow up and I will try and kick my brain into high gear to figure out my situation!

I've recently setup my first 3d printer and plan to move into ASA. I've had a similar idea to ventilate, using a dryer outlet that I'll add to the wall. The other difference is i want to have a manual switch for after the print is finished, and a thermostat to turn the fan on and off to maintain an optimal temperature in the enclosure.

Thanks for the update Irv, quite interesting! Just wanted to remark on your setup with the ductwork. Eliminate the bends and excess ducting and you'll draw out a lot more smoke and smell. The other best practice for ductwork is to reduce the length as much as possible to gain additional draw. This may mean rearranging your setup so that your engraver(s) and/or printer(s) are closer to the exit point. Unless your bathroom style vent on the wall is the same or better, it will actually diminish(restrict) the cfm's of your inline fan. Just my 2 cents from my HVAC experience 😊😊

should the vivosun fan be closer to the exit if not replacing the bath fan completely? so that it is pulling the air more vs pushing

Excellent tip! I have a similar setup with my Voron V2.4 and a special window slot for my sliding windows, where everything is 3D printed and other than the flexible hose and some 12V computer fans I didn't really need to buy anything extra.

I think anyone using a laser engraver/cutter should be using something like this. Very good solution, though I think probably only one of the two fans is needed. Irv, why didn't you 3D print a custom adapter for your duct to vent fan? Your solution looks functional, but... come on, man! Your lab is full of printers! :D

Your are correct. Amazon delivers a lot of stuff same day in my area and I wanted to get this update out. I will print a replacement fan cover/adapter when I get a chance.

@@MakeWithTech Come to think of it, there are likely people who have bought (or are thinking of buying) a laser engraver, but who don't have a 3D printer, so your lathe hood is a good solution for them.

On your 1st video you mentioned the cost and availability of The filters and that was enough for me to become disinterested in the whole 9 yd . If you can't get or afford the filters what's the use?

Irv this video is fantastic! Ive been thinking about this for some time now. What's the brand of air quality meter? And does that work well? Ive not bought a 3d printer for concerns about air quality so the tent plus air ducting and fan solves this issue. Your setup breaks it down into an easy solution. For filaments that need a heated environment like PC or CF nylon, we wouldnt want to pull out the hot air so perhaps we would leave it tented and then after its done printing i could turn on the air exhaust system to extract the hot polluted air. Thoughts? Could you test this? Also how much heat does this tent enable the air yo raise by? Thank you !

remove the bath room motor and fan, use only the hole in the wall with your new fan . you'll get better air flow.( bath room fans don't move a lot of air)
