After running a laser business for 3 years now, where we have the laser running for pretty much the whole day, fume extraction is definitely the hardest technical issue to tackle. We started with a simple axial in line fan. But that didn't really work for long as sticky residue would but up on the fan blades very quickly causing it to stop working properly and needed to disassemble the unit and clean it every two weeks. We tried a radial fan which was more capable of building up pressure, but we ran into the same issues and that thing was loud as hell. We also had a big BOFA unit. Super pricy to buy, but the cost of replacement filters was just absolutely insane. We had to replace the filters every other month at a cost of 500,- per filter set and had a failed motor after about a year which would cost 600,- to replace. Absolutely terrible! That was just stupid and literally throwing away money. We have gone back to a very big in line fan and built a custom big vertical box which the fumes are pulled through from bottom to top and have a filter manufacturer make some filters for us with different filtering classes which are very cheap. No active carbon for the smell, but so be it, we are venting outside anyway. But still can't really say we solved it. It's ongoing drama. The thing is, with every change it works great for the first two months and then the cracks start to show, with whatever system you go. (And yes, spending 500,- on replacement filters every 2 months is cracks BOFA!) Another thing I would recommend is placing a air quality sensor in the space you're in. The laser can really be a health hazard when running it all day every day for years. Even the basic Chinese ones are fine I've found. At least you'll know what's going on and if you have some leakages in your piping etc.

One thing you've missed for putting the fan at the end of your piping (outside even if possible) is that in front of the fan it is sucking air, and behind the fan it is blowing air. Any little hole in your piping after the fan is going to blow all the fumes and dust back into your workspace.

I think that pad that was sitting in the bottom drawer is actually a spare pre-filter that goes in the thin drawer above it (below the first big box you pulled out). It catches the big stuff to protect the more expensive filters. It's cheap and you replace it regularly. I've just bought the same unit a few weeks ago and I couldn't laser without it, its brilliant!

Sure thing and thanks for commenting! For the blades and all metals you will want a fiber laser, and for the wood, acrylics and an handle material you will want a Co2 laser, not sure if buying both is within the hobby budget range, but if you want to do all the material you will need both systems.

This is a great filter if you do manly acrylic and other stuff that isn't to sticky. I have one, but i do most of the time wood and the stickiness of wood damage the filter in a way that you have to change filters each month or so. I now have an other filter from pureair with mineral flower in the system. this must to the job much better if you do wood most of the time.

Hi. Do you have a video tutorial on how to clean up the filters of this kind of fume extractor machine? Thanks
@LaserEngraving911
@LaserEngraving911 Год назад
Hi There, Thanks good question, the filters in these machines are not meant to be "cleaned up" when they are full they need to be completely replaced, it takes quite a while to fill up the filters, I believe a full replacement cost on this machine the pure-air fume extractor is about 300.00, and with normal use you should only need to replace those maybe 1 time a year, unless your cutting ALOT, then every 6 months.

Everyone should be aware that even wood smoke contains carcinogens. My laser is currently out of service due to health concerns expressed by my wife. It will resume operation after I design a more effective filtration system and prove to my wife that all particulates and odors have been removed from the exhaust and CO levels are lower than produced by a gas range. Even the EPA standards fall short of my wife's seal of approval.

I'm starting to think the fume extractor is my only option, because venting straight outside at any elevation would still make some neighbors mad if i was cutting acrylic or leather ... And if the city or someone wants to make my business emissions a big deal, the extractor would stop that issue in it's tracks. I'm in the planning stage of getting started, and am getting the Creality 22W Falcon 2 in a couple weeks. Changed my mind from the Longer Ray5 20W, because of better cable management and seemingly better color results on stainless steel, ans the laser head adjustment looks a lot better with the Falcon 2. I'll have to find a place to just set it up in a garage with the exhaust hose going out the door for the short term, but I'm hoping the $2,000 mini extractor should be perfect as long as I'm engraving more than cutting. It might be tax time before I can think about the extractor. Do slate coasters produce a lot of smoke? I'm mostly going to start with those and engraving stainless steel and anodized aluminum, but i have a wood project planned for a Christmas present 😁
@jshendrickson1
@jshendrickson1 14 часов назад
Now that I finished this video and watched the one covering reasons the business could fail, I'll update this a little, lol. I'm starting with a diode Lazer because of cost, mostly, but also because it can engrave stainless steel AND cut wood and other materials. I'm aware of the speed issue, but this is really just to get my foot in the door with all this, and I'll be focusing on products first, rather than engravings for people. I wish I could share an image of my woodworking design on here, too, I still have my basic drafting skills from High school, and designed a custom video game cabinet (kinda jewelry box sized, with 1/4" Cherry) because you can find carrying cases everywhere, but nothing nice for display or "in-use storage". The goal is to start making things, find something that can show some demand so I can duplicate it, and I'll reinvest every penny into better equipment and more lazers to get it to the point I wish I could just start with right now 🤣 Also, in the other video, you advised against opening a storefront. I completely agree (but shop space would be nice), and I have something to add. These machines can make products that are nice enough for existing local storefronts to add to their own inventory. It might be necessary to get a tax ID and register a business before they'll do much business with you, but that's also part of my plan, specifically with slate coasters. I'll go right to the local vape shop and talk to the owner with some examples in hand and a full catalog of AI art (already backed up on my laptop and converted to vector images) and see if they would consider placing an order. Something new to me, also, that I've only seen 1 channel talk about, is laser engraving transfer tape ... For using diode lasers on glass. I'm assuming the ceramic tile trick with the titanium dioxide would also work on glass, but the tape would add more value because it's colorful and better quality. Sorry for rambling 🤣 I feel like I'm drinking information from a firehose, learning all I can about this. Thank you for everything you do!

Hi there, I'm a new subscriber and am getting my laser (100W with 500 cfm minimum) hooked up for the first time as well as sourcing additional equipment. I was gifted a fume extractor and also plan to direct fumes outside with a 700+ cfm inline fan but wondered if you could comment on how to have both connected to the laser. I'm assuming a "y" connector but not sure what to use to close off extraction on the leg that's not being used. Since you have multiple extractors I'm curious how you alternate use of your extraction techniques shown here on your machines. BTW, thank you so much for a fine video!

@LaserEngraving911 Год назад
Hey Sam, when you are cutting acrylic and leather, if the wind is blowing in their direction, they will prob smell it, wood fabric not so much, you might want to consider a pure -air fume extractor mentioned in my video to buffer the odors. before they leave the shop, one benefit of the fume extractor as well is the powerful exhaust CFM , with the fume extractor you wont have to worry about any odors strong enough to bother anyone outside

I would disagree about your message to not use a centrifugal blower. However I would agree to not use one of the Cheap Chinese versions. you need a high quality one. They can provide the highest airflow and power for its size. and the motor is not involved with the air flow so it won't fail due to particles getting into it from the exhaust air. These are the same blowers we have in all our central heat an air systems, for all those reasons. and because it is so powerful you can use longer runs and place it outside.

My question is exhausting outside for hobbyist is cfm. Exhausting 500 cfm takes a block of air 10 x 50 sq tf per minute, so a room 10 x 12 with an 8’ ceiling (960 cubic feet). So that means the entire room vents once time every 2 minutes. A 1200 sq ft house would be turned over every 20 minutes of There goes the conditioned air of the entire house vented outside. This may sound like a stupid question, but could you just vent the filtered air back into the laser creating a closed system, or would the air inside the enclosed laser become more toxic and not be good when you ran a project that may take 20 minutes to do? Yes, it would require some modification to the laser housing.
@LaserEngraving911
@LaserEngraving911 5 месяцев назад
That would be a very bad idea., you would hurt the laser and also the smoke and fumes could ignite and or interfere with the beam quality. I would not concern your self too much with all those metrics, in the end you want t strong inline fan to evacuate all the smoke and fumes outside, a a good fume extractor.
@Jay.C.H
@Jay.C.H 5 месяцев назад
I meant after it went through a fume extractor then back into the machine. The air would have been cleaned, maybe some vocs would still be present in the cleaned air stream. Just a thought.

It must be the material or the particulate being created by the material your are cutting for sure, some materials can clog filter extremely fast, for example MDF should never be cut using a fume extractor because the glue used to make MDF clogs the filters, fume extractor are not for every application, but for most materials the do a great job. They def have purpose and place for the appropriate application.
