On this episode I continue with the ongoing restoration of this 1979 Kenworth W900A truck to turn it into a tribute movie truck to the one used in the 1977 classic movie Smokey and the Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for??? “Hello Mr. Bandit, would you just happen to be listening out there??”
So now that the paint has had some time to properly cure and I take a closer look at it in the daylight, I’m not that thrilled how it turned out. Obliviously, painting black paint is no easy chore and given I’ve never painted before, I may have bitten off more than I can chew. However, not one to be discouraged for long, I decided I’m going to try and salvage this half-ass paint job but doing my own cut and buff. Essentially, its just a wet sand with ultra-high grit paper then using my new Father’s Day present, cutting it with special glaze to remove all the sand scratches then putting a coat of wax on it. In the end, the section I did on the bunk roof was night and day difference, Biff would be proud. Now I just need to put that same amount of effort in around the whole truck…
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
Enjoy watching the progress of this Kenworth W900A project, the ongoing Peterbilt 359 restoration and the upcoming #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.

Keeping a water spray bottle will help you go a long way as well bro so you don't have to keep getting up and down so much and you can really make that truck shine to your perfection all with your prep and pads on your buffer and your compound

This is why a high quality, professional paint job costs so much. A true professional spends a whole lot of time preparing the surfaces, a little time painting, then more time sanding and polishing. Wet sanding and polishing is pretty much a requirement for a shiny, smooth finish with single stage paints. The two-stage base coat then clear coat can allow you can get away with less or sometimes no wet sanding of the color coat. For many years now, factories have been priming by dipping , then applying base and clear coats via electrostatic paint methods, which applies a very uniform, but also very thin, layer of color and clear coat. Keep up the good work, Mark! Take your time, make it the best you can and you will be rewarded with a great looking truck.

I had mine painted by a guy for pretty cheap. Up close you can tell, but he promised that from 10 feet or more, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. For a working truck, it is pretty good, but I wouldn't mind having a nice paint job.

This is my job, ive been doing machine polishing for 20+ years. Mark, i dont wish to rain on your parade but that is going to look like a dogs dinner when the direct sun is on it, youll see all the buffer trails where youve been with the machine. Slow down a bit with the machine, you're arm speed is too fast and erratic. Instead of going direct to the wax, you need a soft foam pad and fine finishing polish on that dark colour to remove the buffer trails/holograms that the wool pad and heavy cutting polish leaves. I would also advise you to use that orbital sander with 1500 grit paper to sand the orange peel out. It will make it a lot easier and give you a more even finish.

OK mark I do car detailing, 1) your buffing pad needs to be constantly cleaned out, get a pad spur cleaning tool or you can use a screwdriver tip lightly. When pad starts to drag on paint clean it. About every other time you add compound. 2) you will have better success using foam pads not wool. They have different styles and quality. You don't have but 2 coats of paint so you'll have to be very careful. With foam pad. Go much slower with foam pad. Your way too fast on foam pad. You'll get a better shine the higher the sandpaper grit..1st pass use 1500 grit, sand buff off, then use 2000 grit same thing. Buffing it right is a slow process for an experienced person. The buffer you have is hard to master. You should have gotten a duel action buffer way easier and more forgiving.. Also when using your buffer keep pad flat as possible, your using the edge not as much the bottom of pad..do not apply any waxes to fresh paint for a minimum of 45 days..!paint needs to evaporate the solvents out of it. You wax it too soon you'll know it, but read the paint manufacturer recommended time..

Yep needs to keep the cloth pad blown out or it’s going to just leave more scratches and I did a lot of body work back in the day and that was one of the first things I was told was to keep the pad clean or it was just making more work cause it was putting dirt and grit right back in the pad

Nice job Mark! We always use a spray bottle to apply the water. It’s much less mess. Another thing is to get a thin rubber block from a body shop supply house and squeegee the area that you wet sanded. It shows where you need more sanding. Just a couple tips to make your job easier. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!

you can have the best professional paint booth and still for a show quality paint job there will always be some paint correction that will need to be done. you could probably start out with 1000 then do 1200 and then 1500. the 1000 will cut the heavier orange peel faster and easier then going up to a finer grit will make the buffing go faster and easier, spend your time getting the flaws out with the 1000 grit then you can move over it pretty quickly with the finer grits as all your doing at that point is just taking out the sanding scratches from the previous step. change your sand paper often as well goes much faster and easier with fresh sand paper. its looking fantastic your really going to have something to be proud of there.

I stumbled on this channel tonight and I'm glad I did. Smokey and The Bandit is one of my favorite movies. You're doing a great job with the cut and buff of the paint. I might recommend holding the pad flatter on the surface rather than tipping it to the outer edge, you'll get a more consistent shine and you'll have less risk of burn through.

Remember with a black paint job on any vehicle, when you apply wax by hand always rub in one direction. If you rub in a circle it will cause swirl marks, catching the sun's rays. If you rub in one direction the sun can't catch those little scratches as easy. Vivid black Harley owner.

Ok I been painting cars and trucks for twenty years now you do a paint job in a spray booth you can get away without cutting and buffing the paint job but if your going for a show truck a mirror finish then cut and buff it just note to not burn through the clear coat and when sanding you can put a few drops of dish soap it makes the sand paper work a lot better bucket of soapy water a squeegee and keep it super clean take your time it will come out the way you want it good luck and you did a nice job

What a great video and fantastic projects! I admire your work ethic and commitment. I love everything mechanical. I actually spent a significant amount of time behind the wheel of a ‘73 KW W900 with a 400 Cummins, 15 speed (deep reduction on the dash), and 370 rears. What an experience, now that I look back at it. My regular truck was an ‘85 KW W900 but when it was down, the ‘73 was mine. Love the clip of Lamar’s. Also, go get several packs of plain white T-shirts. The cheapest ones you can find. They really help with finding high spots, low spots, and rough spots in bodywork.

Lookin like an ole pro so far. So just a little heads up from a car builder. Try to work smaller areas at a time. Keeps the compound from drying. Spend extra time wet sanding. 1000, 2000, 3000. The trickiest part is buffing. This will make the trickier part soooo much easier. The extra time you spent wet sanding will more than be made up buffing. And you'll get a much better finish. Be very careful with wool pads. They are harsh. Use them when necessary. If the paint doesn't need it don't use it. Use foam. Much more forgiving, same finish. If you need to be more aggressive, use a more aggressive compound. Good luck. Looking good so far.

Watch your corners/edges where your paint will be the thinnest and how your buffing and polishing wheels are going you want the rotation to come off edge not Towards the edge where it could dig into it the paint so it doesn't burn thru the paint which only takes a spilt second to do ( ask me how I know lol) also they make a tool to help clean the wool pad out every so often during use to keep it fluffy but you can use the side of flathead screwdriver or something like that to do the same thing. Your doing great as usual keep up the good work

First were never great but I've learned a lot over the years I may be only 19 but I've painted many vehicles and tractors for people. My first vehicle paint job didn't look great either then I did a wet sand and buff and followed by a wax and it turned out great. Since then I have always wet sanded and buffed. @twinsticks The before and after looks amazing, great job!.......however when ever your ready to lay down the gold paint scheme you're gonna have to do alot of wax stripping before you sand or else you'll be grinding that wax and rubbing compound into the paint surface and will cause you problems down the road as far as paint adhesion and lifting. Wet sanding before laying down your graphics will help the paint to lay flatter with less orange peel to sand and buff out later. Hope this helps some. Keep up the great work I'm living my A-model dreams vicariously through your videos and can't wait to see the finished product when it's out the door rollin' have a great day to you and yours bud.😎👍
