The owner doesn’t realise that Craig is taking advantage- spraying rust protective oil over the parts in his garage. Protecting his hardware… caveat, except his lungs.

Remember it doesn’t have any radiator fan so it gets hot quickly, I would dump all the fuel in the and put some fresh premix in it, remove the expansion chamber and tailpipe and fill the expansion chamber with neat fuel a block off both ends, give it a good shake and leave it overnight to dissolve all the old oil buildup. The tailpipe should be able to come apart for cleaning and repackaging. It does start really easily so i don’t think there’s much wrong with the engine, the water pump seal could be on its way out and just weeping past the seal a little bit?

Could not agree more. The world has gone nuts for pricing things up. I looked at heal plates for my bike, and found one...yes ONE, for....wait for it,...........95 quid!!!!!! 95 bloomin squid. Madness!

I had a fairly high amount of smoke coming out the back of my 2 stroke enduro bike when I fired it up one time. I thought the crank seals had gone as there was also a leak from the seal behind the sprocket. Checked the gearbox oil and the level seemed unchanged. Ran it with the top up plug out and felt for pressure / vacuum but nothing I could feel by blocking the hole with my palm. Turned out all it was was the fuel / oil mix had become very high in oil due to the fuel evaporating over the winter. Fresh fuel and she was back to normal. Been spot on ever since. Not saying this Suzuki is in the same boat but I’d drain all fuel and start over with a clean exhaust too. Also I got given a chainsaw to fix that wouldn’t run once that someone had misunderstood 25/1 mix as 25% it turned out after I looked at the nearly opaque very red fuel. Hopefully the bike will come together for the lad without too much trouble. Keep on keeping on old chap. Loving the channel as always!

I've never had anything to do with 2 stroke motorcycles, just never interrested me. So your faulting of this bikes engine will hopefully give me some insight to the inner workings.

This bike will, make a great mini series Craig, it’s been flogged to death and we can watch you give it a new life, can’t wait to see the progress 👍 that bike reminds me of a 2 stroke Yamaha I had in the 70s, I put extra 2 stroke oil in the tank and left a trail of smoke down my street for a kilometre 😂

If that has been taken apart there will be witness marks on the bolts/ clips. Craig when you’re pushing down on a nut with a spanner/ratchet please use an open hand or you’ll lose knuckles. I’m surprised it started so easy, I’m going with oil seals need attention and rings (amongst other things)it pains me when people get ripped off but I’m certain you’ll get it sorted.👍🏻

Some cowboys put some engine oil in master cylinders to swell up leaky seals and quick sale .

In my opinion for what it’s worth. If it were me I’d put it back together and punt it down the road for whatever I could get out of it. Having been through where you are now, by the time you get through making it right you’re going to have more into it than if you sold it and bought one in better shape. You’re already into caliper parts and wheel bearings. I would bet that when you pull the clutch cover to get at that crank seal that you’re going to have to replace the clutch basket and hub. I see a complete, motor out frame strip in your future. I hope I’m wrong. In any case the videos will be interesting. Enjoy the show! Keep up the good work!!

Hi Craig, "my Restoration" channel here on YT rebuilt the same engine this week and he talks about fitting a seal the wrong way round only in the suzuki causes that smoking, along those lines anyway, maybe check it out.

I really feel for the poor owner of this bike.. Not only has he bought a bad one (which is usually me) - but he has been ripped off with a dodgy so called 'Mechanic' too. But we all live and learn, and im pleased to say, that your bike is now in very good safe hands, with Craig Jones. Craig is simply the most decent, knowledgeable, and honest person you could ever ask to sort out this catalogue of problems. I wish the owner of this bike, all the luck in the world. There is probably nothing wrong with the bike that can’t be fixed and you know and we know that your professionalism and dedication will not allow you to return the bike to it’s owner other than fully serviceable and safe to ride. I look forward to your next video in tracking down the faults.👍

Crank seal on gearbox side

Start it briefly with out the exhaust on,see what happens.See if it still chucks oil all over.

The excessive smoke is due to the oil being burnt in the exaust.

At least it a fairly easy engine to work on Craig👍

you can make that pad retaining bolt from a long stainless steel cap screw you just need an m10 fine die nut i do it on all my bikes where i can it stops some of the corrosion problems if used with a bit of grease just a bit

This bike deserve a full restoration. That is it.

Surely if that much oil was going through the engine the plug would oil up and the motor would be running quite sick. If the plug was oiling up it wouldn't start so easily and pick up well on the throttle. I think something happened in the past which resulted in the exhaust being filled with oil I would just clean the exhaust and give it another try and hope its ok

Sadly there’s far too many rogues out there willing to exploit the honesty of others, let’s just hope karma pays these people a visit sometime.

I'm confused as to why the mechanic didn't spot the rad cap issue. This suggests he didn't run it after replacing that gasket. Strange. Could be wrong but I think it all might have to come apart.

Be careful running the engine pall, I was tuning the engine on my BMW R100 and finished up in hospital. It doesn’t take much.

I have seen two two-strokers run with as badly a smoking problem myself. One had some "Expert" using diesel as "brilliant" additive to the fuel. "A trick the industry won't let you know!!1!". The other had separate oil and petrol tanks and a forked ECU that controlled the mixer. With this one, the owner also might have mistaken the one-fifty oil-fuel ratio for one-fifteen or not have heard there's something like two stroke oil and the gunk in the exhaust is a petrol and 15W40 solution. Or could that be oil from the gearbox that leaked into the crank case? For two stroke oil to collect like this, it would take a gazillion of cold starts with stopping the engine a couple of turns later, well before the exhaust gets hot. At least your shed won't have any rust anymore, now that everything is covered in an oil coating. 🤗🤔😵‍💫 Quick side job? Yir arse, mate! 🥳 That bugger will keep you busy for a bit. 🥴

If it was mine, l'd ask if l could have just the one stainless spoke. I'm from Yorkshire.

Last episode I thought it might be a blocked air filter, now I'm curious, it seems to fire up ok, but the oil in the exhaust looks more like old gearbox oil, so maybe the carb and air filter are ok.

Either way you have to split the engine. Crank seals or gasket between the cases the problem. New gaskets and seal kit as long the barrel and piston good should do it

That oil in the exaust is too thick to be 2 stroke oil ,thats the gearbox oil i think .old 70s early 80s Sukis were known for havin bad sealin from the gearbox to the engine ,this is much newer (99?), i guess youl have to split cases and do all gaskets and seals at least ..

you might have to drill out that carrier and then press in a bronze or brass sleeve, yup, happens ... he paid someone to look at it and that's all they did, look at it... bike hasn't had ANY work for 20 years + ... she needs to be totally gone over, brakes suspension, engine, fuel, cooling, the works . . .

That's a lot of smoke...! Clean out the exhaust and put ne fuel / premix in then see how it runs - it could still be fine...

You want to be a bit careful with what’s coming out of the bloody thing it’s not good, and I don’t think it’s worth fixing, the only thing is he will be care what he buys we have been down this road before it needs a new engine John

Both seals are just as easy to get to. But the side with the new gasket is the "oil" side. The other side is just an "air" seal. And that`s why he only changed the "oil" side. And not the other. I had a Suzuki RMX 250 a few years ago(same as yours only "road legal". Enduro not MX) And that bike had the same smoke problem as your Rm. And on that bike, it was the bras part inside the carb that the needle goes up and down, want to call it emulsion tube. But not sure on the English word. Anyways. That bras part was so worn out that the bike would just get way WAY to much fuel, oiling up the complete exhaust. Spewing oil out. Got a new carb(pwk) and that fixed my bike. But i think the crank seal is your problem. Hoping all that oil was just left over from earlier. Not to be the bearer of bad news..... But i think you should just get a complete gasket set for that engine and change out everything. It is a 2 stroke so it is not that much work replacing all gaskets and seals. And a new piston while you are there.

give it a start without the exhaust to see if its not just residual in the exhaust

If the exhaust content isnt the problem then if he can afford it engine out full strip clean out old gear oil replace all seals & gaskets. They are a simple unit should be easy for a man of your calibre mate . Forget the cleaning other than a quick pressure wash for now. Its no good looking the mutts if you cant see it through the blue fog lol

engine needs opening to see whats what... seals at the very least. thats been sitting for a while with that much oil in the pipe. thats been gathering in the bottom end and is being blown throuh when it runs.

That job looks a potential nightmare. That bike doesn't look like a competent mechanic has been near it for years. If your not careful you'll get roped into a big argument, tricky. On the other hand it needs sorting.. it's a three pipe problem. Re stuff getting dearer, it's going to get worse with more border checks & admin costs for importers: Brexit fecking daft idea that was.

It's a real shame your buddy didn't give you 20 quid to go with him when looking at the bike. Maybe you could have saved him a load of hassle. Anyway, if you're looking at it now, sure it'll get sorted. Just gonna cost more than he paid for the bike to get it sorted (not mentioning that he's already paid someone to fix it who just scammed him).
