Enjoyed the video. Did look like a fun tree. Great job in knocking it down to size. That new chain ripped....but may need constant attention. I just as soon touch up my chains after each job with a round file. Easy if you don't let them get TOO dull....or hit something. Appreciate your efforts in filming your work. Thanks.
I can hand file to 80% of a square grind. Still working with my square grind. My hands can’t take a lot of hand filing anymore but it’s a pain to have to take a chain off the bar to sharpen it or touch it up. Still on the fence but I feel like a cool kid with my square grind.
I'm not a maintenance guy either when it comes to chains. However, if you think about the geometry of a tooth that is round vs square, the round filed full chisel chain is actually hollow ground, which makes the tip/working corner particularly weak. A square filed full chisel tooth is a chisel profile, which makes a much stronger working corner, so it should last longer. I think the guys who are sharpening them every night are cutting timber for hours on end. I sharpen my climbing saw every 2-4 days of working with it, but it's round filed and I don't have a square grinder - yet. I have experimented with hand filing square ground chains, which made me a much better round filer as well. Dead Ash, ugh... seems like thats all i ger to cut here in pa any more. Granted im no pro, but odd jobs for friends and family keep the house warm. Keep us posted on your square grind thoughts 💪
