Tom and Dick Smothers assembled the old Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour gang in February 1988 for a 20th reunion special on CBS. This segment contains the opening comedy sketch.
i just bought the 2 seasons of the old shows and love the sense of time and now i can look back and understand what they the brothers stood for and am sorry that many of this young up n coming generation havent a clue back to those times of war, etc and esp with just 3 tv stations. now its a self serving attitude with most of the young i find and i long for anything that reminds me of yes, the good ol days!
I was too young to understand their humor or cultural impact in 1968 ( I was only 11 at the time), but I can only now appreciate their impact and influence on life in the U.S. These guys were awesome.
Brings back such great memories! I can imagine that if they would have another reunion (if only) they'd look and act exactly the same. Tommy's timing is spot on ain't it?
I remember when they were cancelled and thought at the time CBS censors were stupid. SB were ahead of their time. Laughed until I cried with their skits! ♥
I remember the opening to this had Tom and Dick in a helicopter landing at Century City. They said something like "Tom Wolfe was wrong, you can go home again." After they said this a guy with a bazooka is shown at the heliport and he fires at the Smothers helicopter as they begin to scream.
Wow !!!Forgot how good they were/are. Thanks so much for this video, and RU-vid for all the Smothers Bros sketches."Brill". Check out the American Guild D55 !!! I think Tom was the first ever to own one back in the 60s. The best sounding acoustic guitar ever...........
I heard Howard Stern say, about the 20th reunion show,"What's the Big Deal?" He should count his blessings for these guys!! I haven't really listened to Stern since that idiotic comment!!
TeachESL I was actually fortunate enough to see the both of them perform in 2009 at Peekskill. Shortly after that, they sadly retired from performing. Luckily, no one passed away. ...Yet.
This was the late 80's and I still found his show amusing. Then he made that statement and I pretty much just turned him off. Once in a while I would tune in, but It got old , redundant & predictable so I just cut it out all together.
@fergy429 i saw a relatively recent interview with them on Craig Ferguson (here on youtube), they're both completely white now but their timing was as brilliant at ever. And yes, Tommy is spot on. It's an irony that you have to be really smart to play dumb that well.
Any one who havent taken time to see just far ahead of there times as the smothers brothers was needs to invest just 30 minutes and watch.. I dont think they still havent caught up to just how special they was to tv.
Too bad they've retired. Read somewhere Dicky has Alzeimers and is having a bad time. Tommy has just received an award for his writing of the 60's series, where he backed out so the other writers would get a lot of credit for the comedy (i.e. George Carlin, Steve Martin, etc.). Too bad they can't come back, but would love to see the re-runs.
@Nickcat5 - Yeah, Stern has made a lot of idiotic comments and remarks, and one of the reasons he has lost so much of his audience - me included. I have no idea how he stays on the air.
@alwayssme I was a listener THEN,Just felt he overstepped it. I used to enjoy his show,But that and a few other things sort of turned me away. Tom & Dick were great and didn't seem so self-absorbed . Fans of REAL comedy know the difference.
