Thank you for the great review! The sound samples really highlight the differences...M400 is more analytical with tilted up treble, D50 is warmer, more organic. I totally agree that the D50 would be my preference. I really like your humble, honest approach--it's like listening to a friend, not a so-called "expert". Your videos are a very refreshing change from some arrogant reviewers on RU-vid. Also, I appreciate what you say about the similarities in external design, etc., being a common (legal) practice in China. We have to remember that many factories in China do a major OEM business, and they are free to contract with different companies, as long as they are not counterfeiting. First of all, the Loxjie D50 is clearly not a knock-off of the M400--the internals are completely different, and the sound is different (and better, imho). The branding is also clear--there is no attempt to trick people into thinking the D50 is actually an M400 (or even, lol, an SU-9). People in the U.S. and Western Europe need to understand legal Chinese business practices better before casting aspersions, just as Chinese should understand Western cultural norms better before criticizing them (and yes, Americans and Europeans, mainland Chinese do criticize us, too).

One more important point...while the legality of Loxjie D50 vs. SMSL M400 is not really an issue at all, another critical piece of information for everyone to know is that SMSL and Loxjie are both brands owned by the same company--Shenzhen Shuangmusanlin Electronics (source: AudioScienceReview.com), so the similarity in external appearance is truly 100% legitimate. Topping and Sabaj are also sister brands within the same company of SMSL and Loxjie (source: forums.stevehoffman.tv).

Mega OT. Who is the typical audiophile. 1. Mostly male. 2. Mostly middle age or aged. 3.His musical interest goes beyond one genre. 4. Insatiable curiosity about hi fi components. 5.His best speaker his the next one. 6 Dedicates at least one hour of pure musical listening daily. 7.He's happy with background music while doing other things. 9. While watching movies pays a lot of attention to the sound effects and considers a real torture having no other option but incorporated TV speakers. 10. His audiophile's best friend rig sounds better even though it is cheaper then his. Did I forget anything. Open for suggestions

Stereotype much? I consider myself an audiophile, and I could not disagree more. I love music, and good equipment contributes to that enjoyment, just as nice service and decor in a Michelin 3-star restaurant contribute to the experience. But I do not listen to my equipment, I listen to MUSIC. The music is paramount, just as the food is the centerpiece in my restaurant metaphor. You, sir, are erroneously conflating a fool with a connoisseur. And, yes, there are many fools, but there are also many connoisseurs.

Here people here comment in favor of the D50 type, that it is warmer and more organic. I specifically listened to the entire audio clip, stopping three times on various nuances of the cuts, and my opinion is absolutely the opposite. Volume detail and transparency of the M400 feed the scene is more expressive and clear. The pitches and accents are different for these models. The instruments of the M400 are laid out on the shelves, everything is in its place, and the scene is deeply neutral and clearly drawn in all the nuances. The D50 is rich and voluminous in sound, but it has a little less nuance, a little less spirit, and I liked the middle less, that's for sure. I have my own personal opinion on this matter. Yes, and I listened to it all in the headphones Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro to evaluate the presented material was what I think)))))).

I agree, at least on these samples and via my PC, the M400 sounds clearer and more vibrant. The D50 sounds more subdued and perhaps less "edgy", but that might be due to a more muffled sound. Of course it's really hard to tell via a PC which has its own DAC and speakers. I am now using a Dragonfly Red and I happen to also have Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones. Clearly the quality of the PC's DAC will matter in these comparisons, for example I listened to a comparison of old Tung-Sol tubes with the newer Russian ones. Through my original Dell internal DAC, the old Tung-Sol's sounded much better across the midrange, and the new Russian tubes sounded cheap and tinny. But when I upgraded to the Dragonfly Red DAC, the new Russian Tung-Sol tubes sounded better overall, more airy and vibrant than the originals. So comparisons on the internet are difficult, but despite that I would choose the M400 based on the listening here. I'm still not sure what DAC to get for $1000 US or less. I am leaning toward the Schiit Bifrost 2 ($700 US), but if I could raise my price range higher, I could see the Denafrips Pontus II (about $1750 US) or the Audio GD RM 8 (about $2000 US).

The D50 is the winner...It strives to eliminate the harsh Digitis the SML400 exhibits. I want immersion not the constant reminder that there's a dac in the chain.

The 400 has a tempered glass top, not plastic. I have the 400 with a Naim intergrated. They match up really well together.

I really wanted the Loxjie to be the winner, and although they are very close, the SMSL had slightly more bass, and it also seemed richer on the violin. I'm not so sure the Loxjie is warmer, maybe my headphones. $100 can buy you a nice interconnect or usb lead which would probably equal things out. I'd love to hear the Magician Pegasus against either of these two, just to see if it would be worth the extra $3/400, so common Tharbamar, that's your next job. Thanks for again posting a wonderful demonstration which I'm sure will be helpful to many

M400 is clearer, d50 is smoother, but i think it some kind distortion or noise added by power supply. I'm noticed that many times with dacs changing smps to lps power supply. On example of allo revolution dac the differences are the same as on this video,revolution with lps sound smoother but a little bit muddier. and with smps cleaner and brighter. I personally prefer smps power supply in this case and from this two M400 dac. But for amplifier lps power supply is must, IMHO. Listened this with DT 1990 pro with A pads. D50 is may sound more preferable because of tweeters type in your system, just my 5 cents:) Chain synergy is the main goal.

The only difference that I can hear is the speed. Comparing the node drop at 13:19 and 14:29, D50 produces a more noticeable drop to my hear.

How different is D50 vs D30 in terms of SQ differences? I noticed the D30 has a more analogue record quality compared to other AK4493 DACs which I prefer.

Less refinement, as I said in Sony review it is the closest I can get to reel to reel tape, which I had a lot of experience with in the past, no body can match that Sony DSD engine in refinement.

Man it's the same product (with minor electronic components differences) branded by 2 different names. Just buy the cheaper one,out of these two, and be done with it.
