So glad I fixed my knife!
I smudged my favorite santoku (a SG2 Makoto Kurosaki) awhile back while sharpening it on my suehiro rika 5k polishing stone. I had the bright idea to use the stone to polish the face of the knife as I saw one of my favorite YTers do the same thing. Well, for whatever reason I wound up smudging the mess out of the blade and for awhile I just put up with it until one day I learned that they make very high grit sandpaper.
I stopped at 7000 grit and as you can tell in the video it isn't absolutely perfect but I am satisfied with how the knife looks after the polishing session. You can go up to 10000 and beyond. I used to work at a place where I would polish metal with 12000 grit sandpaper as routine maintenance and that work was the inspiration for this video.
Also, you may need to resharpen your edge after work like this. And don't be like me, use a cut proof glove during this repair. Hand injuries like cuts are the most annoying common injury and are usually very avoidable. So glove up.
Lastly, videos like this typically are just the repair and thats it--so if there is enough demand for just watching the repair in real time, I can put the footage together and upload it.
If you have any questions or pointers or ideas when it comes to this, please drop them below.
Thanks for watching.

I have a polishing machine and buffing wheels to fix micro scratches, it saves a lot of time to do hand sanding from 2000 and above.

and this is exactly how do you ruin any good flat surface on in, pleas wrap sandpaper around wooden block or similar

You probably could have started with a lower grit sand paper and saved yourself time. 1000 working your way up to 3000 is usually enough.

I probably would have started even lower than that. I’m a bladesmith and spend a TON of time on sanding blades that I make. He’s got the right idea though.
