Today we are looking at the Church in Smyrna, its links to the royal gift of Myrrh and its many meanings, we are going to look at 'the synagogue of satan' and how this verse has been taken out of context to attack Jewish people, and at the bright hope Jesus gives the persecuted church of Smyrna by declaring Himself as the beginning and the end, the alpha and omega, the aleph and the tav.

Revelation 2:9 Why were these Gentiles claiming to be Jews in the first place? Were there any benefits in doing so? Somehow, I couldn't grasp the full meaning of this verse in your explanation.... especially the reason behind their claiming to be Jews... This verse is used a lot, as you mentioned, by anti-semites. I really want to be able to explain to those searching the full meaning of it.

Great question! There would be benefits in Gentiles claiming to be Jewish as it would exempt you from some taxes, religious obligations and persecution by the roman authorities. There are two main schools of thought on explaining this verse: 1. The people claiming to be Jews here are not actually Jews but rather gentiles. or 2. The people in the "synagogue of Satan" are in this location Jewish, and are (under pressure of persecution themselves) pointing out to Roman authorities the God-fearing gentiles in their midst. An act like this would be very non-Jewish in nature, and it is in this context that Jesus is turning the accusation back agaisnt them saying their behaviour is very non-Jewish and more satanic / accusational in nature.
